Solomon Grogg was said to have been born in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania in 1784. There is rumor of a Grogg family bible listing his father’s name as Jacob, but this is unconfirmed at this time. Sometime before about 1806, he married Mary Snyder, daughter of John Schneider (see Schneider/Snyder family). About 1810 they removed from Pennsylvania with their first two sons, John and Abraham, to Plain Township in Stark County, Ohio. There he toiled as a farmer without, apparently, much fortune until his death in 1841 at the age of 57. Every family history to be found points out that his children worked the farm as opposed to seeking higher education due to the family’s limited circumstances. He is buried in the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery in Plain Township on the edge of Canton, Ohio.
