Hi,
Thanks for the response. It has been quite awhile since any response on this name. I have learned much since then. My Groh (found in Glogowatz church records as Groo) I have a Franciscus Groo(b:abt 1825 d:abt 1888)married to a Anna Marie Rauch (b:abt. 1825 d: abt 1885)before 1848 in Glogowatz. I have found three children Eva, Joannes(married a Elizabeth Hayberger) and Sophia (mine born in 1855 and died in 1897 in Glogowatz. She married Josef Kayser in 1874 in Glogowatz. The name was spelled Groh on her son's death certificate that listed her as his mom. Her son is John and he moved to Chicago before 1910 and married Rosalia Jerger (also from Glogowatz) at St. Michael's in Chicago in 1910.

I found no Werner associated with our family. Other names that were include Kaiser, Rauch, Jerger, Groo (Groh), Schmaltz, Schmalbach, Valicsek (Wallichek), Lovicz, Folk, Pech, Gerhard, Gruber,Hayberger, Pauer, Putz,Becker Hollich, Heiberger, Dumelle.

Unfortunately we were just in the family plot at St. Joseph's this week burying my wife's dad. The plot is in the G section and reads like a who's who of Glogowatz.

Dennis,
My grandmother, Theresa Groh, was born in Vilagos, Hungary in 1894, came to Chicago, IL in 1911, German-speaking Roman Catholic, married at St. Michael's. Also buried at St. Joseph Cemetery. Married Jacob Werner from Glogowatz. So many similarities with your Kaiser line. Do you know their villages? Would like to share.

Bishop Laurence Groh and his brother Rev. Martin Groh of Lutheran Church

Rev. Martin Groh was my Great -great grandfather, born 1814 in Bavaria Germany, Married a woman named Maria from Alsace-Lorraine, don't know her maiden name. One of their children was my great grandmother, Matilda Groh, whom my mother Rosemary Miley and Aunt Virginia Miley remember details about. I saw an obit in the NY Times in which a sister of Matilda is mentioned (the husband-John Lechtrecker is the subject of the obit.), which states Abbie Groh is the daughter of Martin Groh, a Lutheran priest and the niece of Bishop Laurence Groh. I can't find anything about this Lutheran Bishop. however, per the census info, there is a Laurence Groh, a farmer, born 1815 in Germany. Does anyone know if this farmer was possibly a Bishop- doesn't sound likely to me either. Any advice? Thanks,
Laura

OBIT FOR PHYLLIS (GROH) HERMAN BORN IN KENDALLVILLE INDIANA

Found this Obit in Coldwater Reporter:

COLDWATER — Phyllis Elizabeth Herman, 90, died early Friday morning, April 4, knowing that she was dearly loved by her children, Ruth (John) Scheidler of Coldwater, PJ (Lucy) Herman of Phoenix, Ariz., and Susan Herman, Denmark, eight grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Bard Herman, who died on Nov. 17, 2007. One niece said that having her as an aunt was “like watching a great comet blaze across the sky, then disappear into the darkness of space, a rare privilege you may never experience again.”

Phyllis was born on March 1, 1918, one of eight children born to Elizabeth and Frank Groh in Kendallville, Ind. She was the last surviving child of that marriage. As a young woman, she met Paul when she was working in a Battle Creek restaurant. They shared a love of motorcycles, adventures, travels, and each other.

Paul and Phyllis were married on June 26 in 1937, in Crystal Lake, on their way to a motorcycle rally. They first lived above what was Paul’s Harley Davidson and Indian Motorcycle Shop on Chicago Street in Coldwater, where Dally’s Tire now stands. On their first big motorcycle trip, they rode to Yellowstone Park in Wyoming. Later, they moved, and raised their children in the family home at 20 West Montgomery St., Coldwater. Over the years, they both took on a wide range of jobs, including working as attendants at the Coldwater State Home and Training School, from which Phyllis retired.
I apologize if my earlier message was unclear. The information I have from the Hallman Family Association's records is for the family of Deborah Ann Smith, daughter of Anna Louisa Hallman. The HFA records do not have any additional information for Deborah's spouse, Lewis Groh. I am searching for the descendants of this couple. If you are able to supply information documenting a link between this Lewis Groh and your ancestor, Gottlieb Groh/Caleb Gray, and you are a descendant of Lewis and Deborah Ann's, I would be delighted to tell you more about the Hallman Family Association. If you are not a descendant but know someone who is, please pass this message along to them.
Thank you for your interest!
Martha A Hallowell
Historian, Hallman Family Association

Re: Lewis Groh m Deborah Ann Smith

Thank you for your interest. First, allow me to explain a little about my request. I am the historian for the Hallman Family Association, which was founded in 1908 and incorporated in 1921. Our membership is comprised of descendants of Anthony and Maria Salome Hallman/Heilmann, who came to this country in approx 1719 and purchased land in Skippack, Montgomery Co., PA in 1720. The genealogists/historians for the HFA have been gathering information for our family tree for many years. The current Board of Directors has asked me to review the HFA genealogy information and try to find "missing" family members in time for our 100th Reunion.
I have been tracing each line of descent and posting messages with information from the last person or couple in that line. My messages reference the parents of the Hallman family member, and include year of birth and death for parents, child and spouse, if available. Unfortunately, I can't assume everyone stayed in the Skippack area, so I don't have location/residence information. In many instances, I don't even have the year of birth or death. I have posted as much information as is in the files, and I am hoping that the descendants of these people/couples will recognize their ancestors and contact me to help fill in the blanks.
Could you be a descendant of this couple? If so, I would be delighted to tell you more about the HFA. If you know you are not a descendant, I apologize for taking up your time.
Martha A Hallowell
Historian, Hallman Family Association

I was wondering if you had gotten an answer on this post... it seems that we have a connection. John Henry Groh was one of my great great great grandfathers children. If you need any information on this still, please respond. We have this tree traced back two more generations than John Henry. His wife's maiden name was GRUNDEN. They were married Aug 9, 1886 in Richland Township, Dekalb County, Indiana. My record comes from family histories.

Hi everyone... I am working with my family to put together some information on our heritage. I am very new to this whole genealogy thing. We are trying to find any information on David Groh. We believe he was born in Penn. He later moved to Richland Township, Dekalb county, Indiana. We are looking for any information on his parents. We believe that he entered the Civil War, and died in 1864.
He entered as David Kroh, but his wife is buried as Groh.

He was the father to my grandfather Wilhelm Groh and Heinrich Groh. I have found and been to Heinrich's grave site in Indiana but am still searching all over their decendents.

William
