I wonder if you know anything about a Mrs Edith Grohs who lived in Balmain from 1918 to 1930. I am researching who lived in my house, and she was resident here at 86 Glassop Street. I'm just curious!

Actually, getting this email is funny, because I just started emailing my Aunt Bette Anne for info. on this side of the family. She even mentioned emailing you. I think I lost contact with you because you have changed you email. I even asked Aunt Bette if she had your email address. Anyway I got your email through just my email account not Ancestry. I just went on a short vacation and just got home. I will send another email to you on your other email account. Thanks Carie

Sorry I was browsing RootsWeb, for any Iseke on behalf of my husband Tommy, and when I sent the msg I didn't realize your family is well known to Tommy; especially your father ...they would have been first cousins.
There was a Iseke reunion several weeks back in Honolulu and many people came from the Mainland. We all shared information...if you would like a print out of the most current info shared and what we have so far, we will be happy to send it to you. Please understand, we are only showing the information that is in the 19th and early 20th century; and request that families add their own information from that point to this.
Hi Allison,
I have emailed you before about the Grohs family from Koblenz Germany. I keep looking back on the message board from time to time, and I keep reading you messages, and I don't know if it is a quincidence or not but my Grohs family came from Koblenz too. I just recieved a picture from my father( who is a Grohs) and it's an old picture taken in Koblenz of the Grohs family. Matthew the elder and his wife Katherine (Soffell) and I'm assuming all thier children. There is 10 children, I only knew of four brothers. They are listed as Margrit Marie, Henry, Peter, Antone, Bertha, John, Fritz, Christian, Franz and Annie. Do any of these sound familar to you. Christian born 1865 so I'm assuming that Grandpa Matthew was born in the 1830's, I'm also wondering if Matthew had brothers, that maybe any relation to your family. Anyway, I don't know if you have any new info. to share, I'm still looking. Thanks Carie

Hi! Your on my family tree! You are Gary F. Johnson, yes? Married to JoAn E. Miles? I have been researching our family tree also. In case you want to be sure I actually am related to you and not scamming you, I decend from Raymond Grohs and Mary Church, Wayne R. Grohs and Joyce M. Varsanik, thenSandra E. Wilson and Doulgas A. Wilson. Im Alex. This is incredible. I've never really been into researching my genealogy, but i've been getting into it over the last several days as a result of a history class project. I don't actually have any information regarding John Nicholas Christian Grohs' kids, except that of Louis D., of course. I'm just so excited that i've actually located someone on my family tree. My tree is up-to date as of 2002, so your's is probably more complete than mine...
I really hope you get this message. I know your query was posted early 2003, but hopefully you will still respond to this message. And if you do, have you found any info on John N.C. Grohs' kids?

Please email me at offroadwarriorx@cox.net

Thank You,

Alexander D.
Yes, I think it's an apples/oranges situation here. Our Joseph, father of John, Magdalena, et al., was born in Koblenz around 1834 and came to New York in 1861. He settled out on Long Island and stayed there until his death around 1918. John married Annie Austin in the 1890s and had a large number of kids. Magdalena married someone named Billingsley, and, after she was widowed, married someone named Gray. She never left NY either. John was born in 1872, and Magdalena was born in 1874. Those dates are too late for your John and Magdalena I think.

I'd rather not continue this discussion on a board, but I understand that may be the only method you have of communicating. My e-mail is: vobrien@minncle.org

Here's some of what I've put togther. I suppose through your suggestion we are talking apples and oranges:

John August Gross, a/k/a Grohs came to the United States in 1848, through New York from Hannover, Prussia, Germany. John was approximately 27 having been born in approximately 1821.

John and Magdalena married and settled in Pennsylvania in 1851 where they stayed for approximately six years. He worked at an Iron casting factory. They moved to Minnesota in 1858. His wife was listed as “Helena” in the 1870 census.

He was a Farmer; and she was a Housekeeper on the census form. In 1870, they had 7 children: Anna (16 and born in Pennsylvania), Elisabeth (14 also born in Pennsylvania), Bernhardt (11), Sophia (9), Katharina (5), John (3), and Margaret (1).

John, Sr. is listed as coming from Prussia, and Magdalena from France. (Census records on microfilm at Minnesota History Center Library, St. Paul) In 1870, Magdalena was 36 and John was 49. According to the 1936 Oral History of Anna, the old farm site was “on the other side of the 1936 Calvary Cemetery”.

Mrs. Magdalena Grohs was born in France in 1835 (Obituary, St. Cloud Times February 5, 1919- Minnesota History Center Microfilm).

John died on or about August 15, 1886 and is buried in the Calvary Cemetery in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Magdalena died on February 4, 1919 while living at the home of one surviving daughter, Katherine Zinken, 419 17th Avenue North (notes, St. Cloud Times, February 5th and 7th, 1919- MN History Center, microfilm).
I'd be very interested in sharing and exchnaging research and information on this line and related issues. Among other things, I've looked at oral histories from Anna nad a brother Barney; I hope we can link up!

Frederick GROHS / wife Mary ISEKE

Though my main research interest is in the ISEKE family, I have a little information about a GROHS family (oral history, not yet documented or verified) from South Dakota. Does anyone recognize these people, and have more information about this family?) The siblings of Mary ISEKE came with their father to Alberta, Canada in the 1890s. We are only beginning to research this line now, and would appreciate whatever info is out there about them.

Frederick GROHS married Mary ISEKE and the family lived in the Zell-Redfield-Parkston areas of South Dakota. Their children were 1. Mary (married Wm. Pietz on July 6, 1919)
2. Frederick (married Rose on Nov. 25, 1919, died June 1991?),
3. John (married Bertha Aug. 31, 1925 - Bertha died Nov. 23, 1993)
4. Anne - no info
5. Elizabeth (married John Degan-sp?)
6. William (died May 17, 1989)
6. Joseph (died Apr 2, 1984)
7. Wilhelmina (married Henry/Hank unknown?)
8. Celestine (Sally) married Edward Weutzer; Sally died Jan 8, 1992
9. Nobert (may be spelled Norbert)-no info

I have the following photos of these people:
1. Frederick GROHS in uniform, taken in Mitchell, SD
2. Rose (Weber?) and Frederick GROHS - Parkston, SD wedding photo (November 25, 1919?)
3. John GROHS to Bertha (unknown) - wedding portraits taken in Redfield, SD
4. Mary GROHS and William Pietz - wedding photo taken in Parkston, SD
5. photo card of unidentified GROHS girl, taken in North/South LaCrosse, Wisconsin
Grohs-Iseke family history

Hi Judy! Great to hear from another Iseke descendant! We've been told that the family came from MO to SD and then to Canada, so we have agreement on that family story too. Have you been able to document the family at that point with B-D-M records? land records? I think that's the part I want to work on next!
My father-in-law, Herman Iseke, was the eldest son of the Herman Iseke who came with his father Theodor, brothers Henry and Frank, half-brother Theodor and sister Gertie to Canada. I have family charts for all those families and am part of an informal "family research group" here in the St. Albert-Morinville area currently comparing notes, information and photos that have been passed down by various ancestors. Do you have any info on Mary's mother - Annie Mary Daniel?

We are certainly willing to share what we have (and yes, of course, we will scan photos for you) and have been very pleased to receive information on the Mary Iseke and Frank Grohs families from other list members -- Gerry Tipton, Denis Taft and Joe Wermers who are all working on the Grohs family genealogy. Hope to be able to organize the pieces of the family puzzle in the next few months and proof-read what is already entered into a software program so we can share more easily.
In the meantime, please contact me at ksteward@powersurfr.com, so I can send photos and info along as we get it ready for sharing.

Georg Peter Grohs

Georg Peter Grohs and Elizabetha, nee Schaefer, were my G-Grandparents. To my knowledge he was born at Offenbach, Hessen, Germany about 1826. He died in Balmain, Australia in 1902. Elizabetha was also born at Offenbach in about 1830. They came to Australia in the 'Cesar Goddfroy", arriving in 1856. They settled on the Clarence River at Grafton and raised 6 children, Jacob [born 1856], Sophia [born1861], Catherine [born 1862], Augusta [born 1865], Elizabeth [born ?] and George Ludwig [born 1872]. Augusta was my Grandmother. Elizabetha died in Grafton in 1906. They were pioneers in the Clarence Valley.
I believe Elizabetha was the daughter of Petrus and Catharina Schaefer, nee Dahlbender, but I have not been able to trace Georg Peter's family at all. If I am correct in the line of Elizabetha, she had one brother, Petrus [born abt. 1824] and sisters, Eva [born 1827], Anna Maria [born 1835] Christina [born 1838] and Catharina [born 1842].
I would appreciate any information or any probable family connection as I have no living relative that can give me information about my German heritage. I don't know if any other members [apart from my G-Grandparents] of either of the families concerned migrated to other countries, or if they still remain in Germany. Whatever the case I would very much like to find out. Can anyone help?
