William and Elizabeth Groom in Virginia

I need your help. I am researching my 2nd great grandparents and they seem to fall off the map after 1870.

According to the 1870 Census in Virginia: William H. Groom (24, Farm Laborer), Elizabeth J. (22, Keeping House) and Ella F. (2)

Their neighbors are Washington Grooms (27, Stone Mason), Arthur F. (22, Constable), John S. (29, Farmer) and Martha (7, Keeping House)

The 1880 Census has A. F. Grooms(40, Farmer), Sarah M. (38 Wife of A.F. Keeps House), T.W. (45 Brother of A.F., Bricklayer), J.S. (37 Brother of A.F.), Ella (12 Niece of A.F.) and Robert (9 Nephew of A.F.)

Some of the ages are really off, but what happened to William H. and Elizabeth J.?

Groom/Sherwood NY/MI Marriage or any Info

I posted back in 96, but thought I would give it another go.

I am looking for information on Sybil Groom. I believe that Groom is not her maiden name, but that is unknown and I can't find any marriage information for her to anyone but Charles Sherwood. I believe that she married a Mr. Groom, and had three children by him. The names are Gemalia (Gomalia)H. male, b:1843, Fred M. male, b: 1847, and Frank D. male, b: 1856. She married a Charles G. Sherwood in 1859.

What I am looking for is if anybody has any information on what the first name of Mr. Groom is. I am assuming that Sybil and Mr. Groom married about 1840-1843, as Gemalia was born in 1843. He died after his last child Frank was born.

According to the 1850 Census she was single with two of the three children with her staying with the Mattison family. Then the 1860 Census says that she was living in Michigan by then and married to Charles G. Sherwood.

I would like any information on this family, these relations, anything please.

Is anyone researching the Roxburgh family from Roxburghshire, Scot.? My grandmother, Agnes Roxburgh was born in Peebles in 1884, her father was John. Her mother was Sara Burn from Lilliesleaf. Agnes came to the US in 1905 and worked as a domestic in NYC, then married Alfred Groom and lived in DC.

Barbara,
Thanks for your reply. Here is more info in case we do have a connection:

Alfred Groom b.1885 d.1956 immagrated here from Eng. in 1907 and lived in DC. He was my grandfather. He married Agnes Elizabeth Roxburgh from Peebles, Scotland and they had 2 sons: Alfred Roxburgh Groom and Allan Roxburgh Groom (my father).

Alfred's father was Robert Groom, b.1837 in Brockford, Suffolk, and his father was Robert Groom b. 1807 in Mendlesham, Suffolk. This is my brickwall as I can't trace his father, who was probably born around 1780. I have tried Family History Parish films, and all the major gen. sites online.

The other burning issue is the whereabouts of my cousin (Alfred R. Groom's daughter), b. 1950 or '52 in Northern VA. She is THE only living relative on my uncle's side of the family and I have not seen her in 55 years. Any suggestions? Thanks again!
Elizabeth Groom

Re: Groom/Snelling marriages, Caldwell Co, KY, 1840s

Since our dna is matching with a descendent of Major Groom of Caldwell Co KY/Louisa Co VA thus his parents John and Sarah Groom of Spotsylvania Co VA, and also to Robert and Susannah Seward Groom of King & Queen Co VA both families of mid 1700s, I've been trying to run out a few details on these particular generations to find my Elijah Grooms b 1805 in KY and my greatgrandfather Daniel Grooms b 1823 in TN--probably Fentress Co TN. I can add a bit of information to the previous post on these families. We do not have a descendent of the Zachariah Groome of Middlesex Co VA who died in 1795 participating in our dna project, but a see that a John Seward married his daughter Rebecca. So I cannot conclude that this is the Zachariah, son of John and Sarah Groom yet. But anytime I see connecting surnames I get really interested. We have definitely have connections with the Webb, Bibb, Gatewood, Quisenberry, Evans families etc. We find the marriage and children's births for Robert and Susannah Seward Groom in the Christ Church registers. However, at this time I cannot confirm the last name of John Groom's wife, but she was a Sarah from legal documents of Orange Co VA in 1759 which she signed. She is NOT the Sarah Webb Groom mentioned in the will of William Warren Webb who also mentions a grandson John Groom. William Warren Webb's daughter Ann Webb Gatewood specifically mentions her niece Sarah Groom--daughter of William Groom in her will. This would be her sister Sarah Webb Groom and William Groom's child. Ann Gatewood also mentions a kinswoman Mildred Delaney, who happens to be the child of John and Sarah Groom who married Prettyman or John Delaney. Milly is mentioned in the will of her brother John Groom Jr from Orange Co VA 1805. I suspect this William is also the brother of John Jr, again mentioned in John Jr's will although other researchers think the William Groom who married Sarah Parker and resided in Bourbon Co KY is the son of John and Sarah Groom. Don't know for sure. Anyway, John Jr born 1748 had lost a leg at Battle of York and younger brother Major born 1762 finished his tour of duty in the REV WAR. John Jr mentions his wife Mary in his will who he married 8/8/1803. From her will of 1815 Mary Groom names her sister as Ann Cook, wife of the Rev William Cook who was executor for both her will and that of John's. That makes Ann and Mary daughters of Edward and Mary Harris Nelson of Hanover Co VA. The Mary Groom who married Joseph Atkins 8/1/1782 according to Douglas Register is a sister to John Jr Groom per his will. Sister Elizabeth or Betsie Groom married first Thomas Wright of the Isle of Wight and later John Herndon. Brother Richard Groom married Barbara McGeehee 3/9/1795 daughter of John McGeehee. Sister Ann or Nancie Groom married either a John Harrison per estate sale of 3/13/1798 or Henry Harrison 7/18/1782 per Douglas Register. The nieces and nephews of these siblings were to inherit John Jr's land warrant in KY-Clark/Fayette Co KY area. Now to the children of Major Groom and Christina Melinda "Kitty" Bibb--daughter of John Bibb and Sarah Thomsson: Sarah Bibb Groom married Benjamin Quisenberry son of Aaron Quisenberry. Quisenberry's had land grants in Clark and Fayette Co KY area. John Bibb Groom married first Nancy Draper then Elizabeth Adams. Benjamin Bibb Groom married Rachel Skinner daughter of Cornelius Skinner and Jane Carr. Skinners were also in the Clark Co KY area. Ben B Groom Jr and wife Elizabeth Thomson had a large plantation in Clark Co. She was daughter of Sen. Harrison Thomson and mother to son Harrison Groom. Both Ben B and Harrison founded Groom TX but are buried in Lexington KY cemetery--lavish funerals per Milford Funeral Home. Patsy Chew Groom married Samuel Baker a noted slave trader? There was a Chew family back in Spotsylvania Co VA. Connections, probably? Richard Crittendon Groom married Agnes White. Named for Richard Crittendon Webb, son of William Warren and Mary Crittendon Webb?? Most likely. William Garland Groom married first Martha Jones then Margaret Martha Ann Snelling Wall. Mildred Ann Groom married George Collins. Interesting that James Littleton Biven Groom who married Elizabeth Ellen Snelling was a blacksmith. My greatgrandfather Daniel Grooms 1823, Grandfather Jesse Calvin Grooms 1854 and Dad James Shellie Groom 1892 were all blacksmiths by trade. Then Julie Ann Groom married John Jones. Hope this helps someone. Sure would appreciate any leads. Currently researching a possible connection to the John S Grooms family (1826) of Casey Co KY who say they were also from Fentress Co TN. Thanks.

Hello -- We seem to share the info on William Groom (1755-1811) who had a son Moses, though my information on his birth year is different (b. 1781).

Major Groom was the youngest brother of the William Groom (1755-1811), while Zachariah was an older brother, with the eldest brother being John.

unfortunately, the information I have with me is a geneology my father prepared for me that pertains to our line -- so none of the information on marriages and children from the siblings is listed (though it may exist in our records somewhere). So I've nothing useful to add to your research on your lineage.

I have written out all that I have in detail in a reply to another query a bit farther down this thread. For however it may help you too!

What strikes me most is how very prolific these Grooms were! no wonder it is such a tangle to figure out the relationships!

Best, Martha Groom

Your information is fascinating -- I read the posts you have made on the will with great interest.

My information comes from research completed by my grandfather, who visited many records during his life, and some follow up by my father, who has done more of his research via the web. I have none of the documentation myself.

My information has John Groom having died in 1804 or 1805 in Louisa Co, Virginia. HIs wife Sarah Webb had died in 1797 - her birth year is given as 1724. There is no birth year in my information for this John Groom.

Their children were as follows:

John Groom (died also in 1804/1805 in Orange Co, VA), married to Mary (no surname in our geneology)

Zachariah Groom (died in 1795 in King & Queen Co, VA) -- No spouse name listed, but children listed as Richard Needles, William, John, Rebeca (who married a John Seward), Elizabeth, and Thomas.

Mary Groom, who married someone with the surname of Atkins

William Groom, who in our geneology is showing as having married Sarah Elizabeth Parker (b. 1757, m 1775/1776, no death date or locations). William Groom is listed as having died in Apr 1811 in Bourbon Co, KY. Their children are listed as Abraham, Isaac, Moses, Jacob, Aaron, Susan, and Elizabeth.

Elizabeth Groom who married someone with the surname Wright, and they had a child Sally Wright.

Richard Groom

Thomas Groom, who marries Elizabeth (no surname), who had a son John Groom who is shown as marrying someone names DELANEY (22 Jan 1798)

Milley Groom -- who married someone with the surname also of Delaney

Ann Groom who married someone with the surname Harrison

Major Groom - born 1762, died in 1845 married Christiana Melinda BIBB (b. 26 Jan 1780 Louisa Co VA, married 18 Jan 1798; died 17 Sept 1848 in Caldwell Co, KY)

(And that is all I have for their children)

Major Groom and Christiana Melinda Bibb had 8 children listed:

Sarah Bibb Groom (b. 24 Mar 1799 in Louisa Co, VA; d. Aug 1863 in Caldwell Co KY)

John Bibb Groom (b. 15 Feb 1801-Louisa Co, VA; d. 13 Oct 1823 Caldwell Co KY)

Benjamin Bibb Groom (B. 1 Feb 1803-Louisa Co, VA; d. He married Elizabeth Ellen Snelling (b. 7 Oct 1829-CaldwellCo, KY, married on 29 May 1845; d. 5 Nov 1863-Caldwell Co, KY)

They had 10 children, my great grandfather having been the 8th. In order they were:

Christiana Melinda Groom (b. 29 June 1846-Caldwell Co, KY, d. 2 Jne 1918-Caldwell Co)

Eliza Frances Groom (B. 10 June 1848-Caldwell Co; D. 25 Mar 1871-Caldwell Co, KY)

Mary Elizabeth Groom (b. 29 Sept 1849-Caldwell Co, KY; d. 22 Nov 1915-Caldwell Co, KY)

William Snelling Groom (b. 30 Oct 1851-Caldwell Co, KY; d. 26 Oct 1939-Caldwell Co, KY)

Major John Groom (b. 7 oct 1853-Caldwell Co, KY; d. 12 Jan 1922-Caldwell Co KY)

Virginia Richard Groom (b. 11 May 1855-Caldwell Co, KY; d. 6 May 1940-Caldwell Co, KY)

Lou Mattie Groom (b. 24 May 1858-Caldwell Co, KY, d. 13 Oct 1917-Caldwell co, KY)

James Bibb Groom (b. 5 Apr 1860-Caldwell Co, KY; death date missing, though we must have this as my grandparents had him live with them to the end of his life, and my father grew up with him in their house) - Married Hannah Jane Whetstone (b. 10 Dec 1857 in Henry Co, IA; married on 9 Oct 1888, d. 6 Apr 1939). -- More on their children after I finish the children of JLB Groom and Elizabeth Snelling Groom.

Charles Lorenzo Groom (b. 24 Feb 1862-Caldewell Co, KY; d. 6 August 1937-Caldwell Country, KY

No given name listed GROOM (b.&d. 1863-Caldewell Co, KY) (From this, I infer that Elizabeth Snelling Groom died in childbirth with this child, or both suffered problems that led to their death very shortly.

OK, the children of James Bibb Groom and Hannah Jane Whetstone Groom were as follows:

Stewart Bibb Groom (b. 15 Oct 1889-Near Cobb, Caldwell Co, KY; d. 21 Mar 1969-Bronson, FL) (lacking his marriage information, but in our records somewhere)

Margaret Elizabeth Groom (b. 26 Jun 1862-Near Cobb, Caldwell Co, KY - lacking death date as well as marriage information, but I know all exists in our family records. The document I am working from appears to be one my grandfather compiled during his early life, as only the death of him mother is recorded)

Emma Estella Groom (b. 15 Mar 1894-Princeton KY - again, I lack the death date and marriage information, but this is something we have in our family records)

Charles Littleton Groom (b. 20 Sept 1896 - Princeton, KY, d. 28 Jul 1975-Princeton, NJ) - this is my grandfather

James Leonard Groom (b. 20 Sept 1896-Princeton KY; d. 29 Sept 1958 -in VA)

Willie Francis Groom (not sure of spelling - this was my great Aunt) (b. 11 Aug 1899-Princeton KY; d. 1950s in VA, I believe -- we have this information elsewhere).

I'll not go on at this point with the children of my grandfather and my grandmother Maurine May Suiter unless anyone wants that too.

I hope this detail is helpful. As far as I know, the earlier dates were researched by my grandfather who visited parish and county records. Much of the later information is more direct, as they concerned relatives whom he new directly.

Best, Martha Groom

I would like to share information about our Groom/Grooms lineages. As you know there are multiple Johns, Williams, Zachariahs and Sarahs in the same proximity and eras so it has made our research difficult. The John Groom (Jr) will of 1805 Orange Co VA sheds a lot of light on his siblings and children of John Groom (Sr) of Spotsylvania Co VA mid 1700s. There was indeed a brother William and a deceased brother Zachariah in 1805. I've been trying to determine if this is the William who married Sarah Webb, daughter of William Warren Webb and Mary Crittendon. Sarah's brother Richard Crittendon Webb was an officer in the REV WAR and had a land warrant in Fayette Co KY next to the land of John Groom Jr which John left to his nieces and nephews. Richard was John Jr's commanding officer. I have yet to verify who John Groom SR was married to, but it wasn't this particular Sarah Webb. Contact me at meljr09@msn.com.

Your reply caught my interest. I believe I am a descendent of John Groom and Sarah Webb. My line follows from John Groom, to son, William Groom 1755 - 1811, to Moses Groom 1788 - 1809, to William W. Groom 1821 -1886, to William E. Groom 1870 - 1918, to my grandfather Arthur Kermit Grooms. I have a sibling for William Groom 1755 - 1811 as Zachariah Groom, but do not have a Major Groom. Would like to clarify and document if you would like to share information. I am also interested in confirming John Groom's parents names as I have a John Jerome and Jane Kempton from another person's tree, but no documentation to back it up. There was also no explanation why the surname would have changed.

Yes, I am also a decendent of the Major Groom & Christina Bibb, but via James Littleton Biven Groom who married Elizabeth Snelling in the original post JLB Groom was the younger brother of your ancestor Mildred (Martha) Ann Groom.
Christina Bibb appears to have had one other living child, Charles Lorenzo (who was called Lorenzo) and then died in childbirth with their 10th child in 1863. I have a fairly complete geneology of the Groom line - at least through our family - but alas nothing of your branch. What are some of the things you would wish to know about the Grooms?

Thomas Jefferson Groom (1834 Lancaster Co, PA -?) married Martha M.Smith (1834-?). They had the following children: Dora, Rachel Annie Bertha, Alice & George, all born Clearfield County, PA. In 1900 census a grandson, Amos E. (b.1884) was living with Thomas & Martha. Since son George would have been too young to be Amos' father, I believe Amos may have been the illegitimate son of one of the girls. He married Iva Ruth, abt. 1907 and had the following children: Anna, Samuel, Thomas, Amos, Helen, William, Iva, Gordon & Betty. Amos E.'s death certificate lists parents as ?. Informant was wife. Looking to solve this mystery!

James Bibb Groom married Hannah Whetstone in 1888, and they had 6 children, with the 4th and 5th being my grandfather and his twin - Charles LITTLETON Groom and James LEONARD Groom (both went by their middle names). My father was named for his uncle, James Leonard Groom. I have the family tree, which extends back to Major Groom's father - Who was a John Groom who married a Sarah Webb. They lived in Virginia.

DNA Matches MS, KY, TN, VA

We have just received conclusive dna evidence that matches the Valentine Groom line out of Adams and Wilkinson Co MS to the Enoch Madison Groom line out of Barren and Monroe Co KY. Valentine and Enoch were recorded sons of Robert and Susannah Seward Groom 1750s-1800 in K&Q Co VA. DNA has also established a blood connection to the John Groom SR family out of Spotsylvania Co VA/Louisa/Orange 1750s as well. We are very excited about this development and hope it will inspire other males of the Groom/Grooms/Groome surname to participate in our project. My line is Daniel Grooms b 1823 Fentress Co TN and Elijah Grooms b 1805 KY who is probably his father. We also have a dna blood connection, I just don't know yet where on the family tree. Please contact me.

Sharon. There are a number of Groom and Webb researchers who would like your information. The identity of this particular father-William Groom is important to clarifying some of the Groom lines. The mother is obviously a Webb and I believe your ancestress Sarah Webb Groom is the granddaughter mentioned in the will of William Warren Webb and also the niece mentioned in the will of Ann Gatewood Webb. William Warren Webb's daughter Sarah married William Groom or Groome. I'll try to contact you by email. Thanks. Ann Groom Lenz

Thank you for your reply. These are the people in our vergers family.
Frank Groom born 1927 ( the Verger, his wife is Doreen Bowles )His parents were
Frank Groom born 1905 and Ivy Jane Spalding married Apr 26 1924
This is where I get stuck because in the marriage details of his parents it names his father as the son of Joseph Groom . However the verger thinks Joseph Groom was his father`s uncle !!!!! I am stuck !! Many thanks for your time. Carol

Am hoping to obtain more info on my forebears when the 1911 census is readily and cheaply (or freely) available!! Thanks for your interest nevertheless - my tree & all details are available online at genealogy.com - just google my name at you should be able to access it - 07771963026 - regards, Tim Groome.......

Groom & Denman family history

Further to the last message posted I have researched these families quite extensively and have found out about the circumstances of my paternal grandmothers demise. It seems that the family were living under the auspices of the South Stoneham Union in Eckowe Villas in what is now Dt Denys, Southampton. She had 3 sons in quick succession and at the end of 1881 was committed to Knowle Lunatic Asylum in Fareham suffering from "melancholis" - this is what we would now call post natal depression. She spent the next 10 years there dying in the summer of 1891. Both my paternal Grandparents were one of 8 siblings and so I would have hoped to find someone with family info - have recently discovered that my uncle Hamilton Denman Groom was in Australia (Sydney) in the 1930s and married to a Lucy. Maybe hear from someone out there - thanks....Tim Groome.
