Unfortunately DNA is best for proving who you are NOT related to, but it will put you in the ball park for approximate era. We still have to find the documentation etc to make the connections. We know that the Zachariah of Middlesex attended the same church as Richard and Barbara Groom (worked on the same charity case) as well as Robert and Susannah Groom, but I still can't prove that they are all related. There is still the mystery of the identity of the deceased brother Zachariah mentioned in the will of John Groom Jr of 1805 from Louisa/Orange Co VA. DNA is matching up for descendents of John SR of Spotsylvania/Orange and that of descendents of Robert Groom of King and Queen. Brothers or cousins remains to be seen. Sorry, I don't have the lineage worked out for Zachariah of Middlesex yet.

Could you send me the descendants of Zachariah from Middlesex Co, VA? My info is sketchy there. Thanks! Peggy

Clearfield Co, PA Groom/Groome family

Thomas Jefferson Groom (1834 Lancaster Co, PA -?) married Martha M.Smith (1834-?). They had the following children: Dora, Rachel, Annie, Bertha, Alice & George, all born Clearfield County, PA. In 1900 census a grandson, Amos E. (b.1884) was living with Thomas & Martha. Since son George would have been too young to be Amos' father, I believe Amos may have been the illegitimate son of one of the girls. He married Iva Ruth, abt. 1907 and had the following children: Anna, Samuel, Thomas, Amos, Helen, William, Iva, Gordon & Betty. Amos E.'s death certificate lists parents as ?. Informant was wife. Looking to solve this mystery!
Amos E. died in NJ in 1856 and is buried in Clearfield County.

Hi there, my grandfather is also William Gawley from Kilkeel, there are no other William Gawley's in Kilkeel so we must be related. My great aunt Carrie lived in Fleetwood and we (4 Manchester girls)spent many happy summers there in Fleetwood - staying in her house during the holidays over 45 years ago. When not there we were in Kilkeel ourselves. I know aunt Carrie married a man named Cross, so is this where your connection is? My name is Patricia former surname Murphy. My mother was Sarah Murphy nee Gawley (William's daughter). I remember a child named Caroline in Fleetwood (I was born 1955). Its so long ago I forget the people. Please respond if any of this makes sense

Samuel William Groome Jr from Philadelphia

I am looking for information on Samuel William Groome, Jr. from Philadelphia. In the 1890s or late 1880s, to the shock of his parents, he eloped with the well known actress Maud Haslam. She died in 1899. In 1912 (or maybe late 1911), Samuel W married Carolina Cecelia de Estevez. De Estevez was her maiden name. However, she was divorced from Thomas H Terry sometime between 1907 and 1912 so she used Carolina E Terry or Mrs Thomas Terry. Samuel William Groome died in 1920.

Lorraine, My Margaret Gawley was born in 1863 in Kilkeel, County Down, Northern Ireland to William and Mary Gawley. She later emigrated to Pennsylvania in the late 1880's and we have traced her family.

However, I know that my Gawley's also went to Canada - but have not traced them yet. I am still searching for the brothers/sisters of Thomas Gauley/Gawley born around 1785-90 who married Jane Reilly, also the brothers and sisters of William Gawley his son born about 1830's who married Mary Lynch - the parents of the above named Margaret. We have no further info. about any of them and know that they travelled back and forth from Kilkeel to PA for many years.

The problem is we do not know any of the names of these brothers and sisters and are at a dead end, so they could easily be related to your Gawley's and we would not know unless anyone in your family has knowledge that there were relatives of around those times named Thomas and later his son William.

Re: James & Elizabeth Groome - England to Mississippi

The latest information that I have on this family indicates that Joseph Groome married Elizabeth Smith on 5 Dec 1836 at Saint Leonards, Shoreditch, London, England. Joseph appears to have been born 13 May 1817 in Shoreditch to Joseph and Celia Groome. Elizabeth Smith may have been born on or about 19 Jan 1816 based on a statement written down in the Fisher Funera Home records for her (Vicksburg MS).

There is little likelihood that additional information will become available concerning their ancestors, but I am always hopeful.

Joseph and Elizabeth had four sons before they emigrated to the USA in Oct 1850. The eldest, also named Joseph, was born 3 Apr 1838 according to the baptism records of the St. John the Baptist's Church in Hoxton (also in London). According to the same records, the next three sons were Thomas, born 12 May 1840, William, born 11 Jan 1844, and Jonathan, born 29 Nov 1845. Apparently their parents took all four boys to St. John's on 29 Sep 1847 to be christened.

Two additional notes: (1) all three Josephs, grandfather, father, and son, were shoemakers. (2) It is possible that Joseph and Celia Groome also had a son named John who was born 23 Jul 1814 in Shoreditch.

I welcome any additional information.

Charlie
This is an undate to my previous message.

First, James' name was actually Joseph. Joseph (32), Elizabeth (32), Joseph (11), Thomas (9), William (6), and John (3) Groome arrived at New Orleans on 14 Oct 1850 aboard the Hazuenas. The port of departure was Liverpool.

According to the obituary and death certificate of their eldest son, the family came from London, and Elizabeth's maiden name was Smith.

After arriving in America, the family moved up the Mississippi River to near Memphis. They later moved down to Vicksburg where the family settled for several generations.

Any clues to their lives in England will be greatly welcomed.

The following children: Jacob, Mary, Christian and Lizzie. This sound familiar to anyone?

Thanks. We are always open to all clues. I sure hope you can convince your brother to participate in the dna project. I got my own brother to relunctantly agree and now he is so glad that he did. We have definitely matched with known descendents of the Groom/Grooms families of colonial VA and the information and leads we have obtained have been great. Three of our participants are trying to determine ties, if any, back to the Zachariah Groome of Middlesex Co VA. It would really help if your brother matched to one of these three. Let me know if I can talk to him or give him other information. Ann Groom Lenz
This would really clarify some issues on our Groom/Grooms/Groome lineage. Do you have Bible records etc back to the Zachariah of Caswell Co NC? We are unclear, but think he is the son of the John Groome of Middlesex, and grandson of the Zachariah of Middlesex/King and Queen. Can you straighten us out on any of that? Our dna project is at www.familytreedna.com and we would love to have you participate if you have the Groome surname. That technology is the "Proof of the pudding" so to speak. It has really helped us define the various lines. An entry test is 12 markers for about $100. Some of us went back for additional markers to further define the lines. What dna testing actually identifies is who you are NOT related to, but that saves lots of valuable research time. Look forward to hearing from you again. Ann

I have not progressed that far yet. I got side-tracked looking for my grandmother's parents. No luck so far. I found lolly on one of the message boards. There seems to be a mix up with the Zachariah's in the first 3 generations. 1760-1830. Some birthdates and spouses do not match. Maybe you already know all of this or have already contacted her. I would like to help with this but don't see how i would be of any help since I am a female. Looking forward to hearing more from you. I do have an e-mail address for lolly but I didn't want to put it out for everyone to read.
