Virginia,

Magdeleine Arthemise GROS was born on 14 Mar 1806 and baptized at Assumption Church in Plattenville on 19 June. Refer to DIOCESE OF BATON ROUGE CATHOLIC CHURCH RECORDS, Volume 3, page 382, for an abstract of this baptism.

Her parents were married on 25 Feb 1794 at St John the Baptist Church in Edgard. Refer to ARCHDIOCESE OF NEW ORLEANS SACRAMENTAL RECORDS, Volume 5, pages 151 (bride) and 196 (groom) for abstracts of this marriage.

No, I do not descend from Artemise but I do descend from the sister of Claude Gros' spouse, Marguerite MICHEL. Her sister Catherine MICHEL married twice, first to Simon Tregre and second to Francois Olivier and I have lines back to both of them.

Thanks for the additional possibility. I have a feeling that they were "German" since they settled in two German/Swiss communities. A will has Solomon's name written as Gross or Groff. I am going to misspell this, but it is written if "frizien" German. I do have one known ancestor from Norway.

Hello out there,
In my never ending (or so it seems!) attempt to confirm the parentage etc. of my 2nd great grandfather Merile Gros of Assumption Parish, LA, I recently discoverd that there were about 6 soldiers in Co. C of the 1st LA Heavy Artillery Regiment (CSA) whose last names were spelled Greaux and in a few cases were also spelled Gros. I believe the correct spelling in all cases is Gros. Of particular interst to me are the names Merille Greaux and Michelle Greaux. These two soldiers, along with Alfred Gros/Greaux, Joseph Greaux/Gros, Lausinais/Segros/Lowin Greaux/Gros and Manilla Greaux all joined/were conscripted into this unit on October 20, 1862. Based on the records of Alfred, Joseph and Lausinais, I suspect that they were all from Assumption Parish. Merille Greaux died of disease 30 Nov 1862 and Michelle died of disease by Dec 1862, both at Vicksburg, MS. I suspect that Merille is my "missing" 2nd gr gf Merile Gros and Michelle is his brother Michel Gros. My Merile was born about 1835 and married Pauline Hebert (1831-1915 Arkansas) in 1859. My gr gf Joseph Cleophas Gros (1862-1917 Arkansas) was their son. Michel Gros was born in 1837 and was married to Rosalie Obeline Hebert (1831-?) in 1859. Michel and Rosalie had a son Pierre Cleophas Gros (1861-?). Michel and Merile (?) were sons of Jean Pierre Gros and Celeste Marie Hebert. Their wives, Pauline and Rosalie were sisters, the daughters of Ursin Hebert and Marie Constance Hebert. Does anyone have any additional info about these soldiers or thoughts?! Pauline Hebert Gros remarried (to Francois Lizonier Bourg) in 1866. Does anyone have anything on Michel or his wife Rosalie?

Since posting my message an hour ago, I discovered that Michelle Greaux (Michel Gros ?) died Dec 23, 1862 and is buried in Vicksburg City Cemetery, Vicksburg, MS.

Just wanted to let you know another variant spelling, especially in Norway is GROOS.

GROF ( I think the "F" is like a double S in the old German script.

I am looking for information on the ancestors and siblings of my great grandmother, Maria Henrietta Gros (also known as Gross), born in Nassau an der Lahn in 1833. She married Charles Biehle in Boonville, Missouri on October 16, 1856, and died in Boonville in 1894. Her father was Johann David Gros (or Gross) born in Muchesny, Germany in 1802 and died in Boonville, MO in 1878. Her mother was Johanetta Kurtz Knodt Biehle, born in 1800 in Nassau an der Lahn and died in 1848 in Nassau. Maria Henrietta Gros (Gross) apparently had three siblings: Johanetta, who married Anton Meier and died in Boonville, MO at age 21; Christian, born in 1831 and married to Anne Stegner who had at least two children, Charles and Emil; and William, Born in 1835, married Rosa and lived in Boonville (they had six children: John, Herman, Rose, Kate, George and Will).

I'm Myra's daughter and also looking for information about my family history. Mother thought that Joseph Gros may actually have been from France based upon what her grandmother had told her. Have you requested George Gros' birth certificate? I believe it is public record this year. Perhaps that would have his father's place of birth.
