Be careful about assuming there was a spelling change. In colonial America "ss" was written with a letter that looks like our "f" with the lower portion extending below the line. So Gross would be written so it looked like "Grof". We do not use this letter in our modern writing and some mistakenly read the old letter as "f" when it was really "ss".
