Am looking for info on my grandfather jacob Ludwig Gross born in Alsace Lorraine, when it was German territory. He had 4 brothers, Philip, who was in the French foreign legion, Max, Augustus and Andrew. His sisters were Evangeline, who was a Catholic nun in Germany, Elizabeth and Francis who moved to Switzerland. He has a grandson in Germany named Ernie. He married Rose Kaercher from Michigan. He supposedly jumped ship in Canada, was in German navy, and came to US illegally. Used his brothers passport, I don't know which brother.
Thanks for any info on German connections or ancestry. He didn't talk much about his homeland.

Thanks!
I am just starting to find out information on my great grandfather, William Henry Gross, born according to my info in Iowa on December 4, 1870. Could the William Henry Gross that you are mentioning be my great great grandfather?
I know that my great grandfather had a brother Henry and a sister Rose, not known if there were other siblings. He married his wife Louise Zehnder in Ladue, MO, so I know he had a Missouri connection. Both my grandmother and her brother were born in Ladue MO. I have no information on my great grandfather other than what I have here. NO idea who his parents were, etc. Could there be a connection?

John Gross b. 1797 (W)Virginia, married Emily b. 1801 Vermont, twin to Abraham???

Does anyone have potential info on John Gross born 1797 in Virginia? His children were John W, William A (my ancestor), Sarah E, James, and David Gross. I noticed he was born the same year as the popular ancestor Abraham Gross; is there a possibility they could be twins? John was born in VA, but his children were all born in Ohio before 1850, and then the family moved to Indiana, where most of them stayed. If anyone has any sort of lead on this I would really appreciate it! Thanks!

Gross of Königheim

My Gross family roots all came from the small Jewish community in Königheim in the northern area of the Grand Duchy of Baden and during the period 1854 to 1865. I have identified four of them who emigrated to America - Isaac, Raphael, Moses and Moses. Isaac and Raphael are brothers and the Moses' appear to be cousins.

Isaac (aka Ascher) came first in 1854 to Worcester with his buddy from Königheim, Philip Strauss and they started a Millinery goods business bringing in imports from contacts back home in Baden for resale. In 1856 they were joined by Raphael, Isaac's younger brother, and Leopold Strauss, Philip's younger brother. After a couple of years the older pair sold the Worcester business to their younger siblings and they moved to Boston where they replicated the business. Somewhere along the line Hannah Strauss - sister to Leopold and Philip - joined these four and she lived with her brother Leopold in Worcester. In 1865 she married Raphael. Their eldest son, Henry Joseph Gross, was my grandfather. I am not certain when the two Moses appeared, but one Moses died in about 1863 just after he was married in Boston and I have pictures of his grave stone in the Wakefield Cemetery north of Boston. He had no children. The other Moses stayed in Worcester and eventually owned the whole millinery business started by his cousins and the Strauss's. It folded when he died about 1910. I have no record of him being married or having children, yet.

Raphael Gross and Hannah Strauss had six children, Henry my grandfather, who married an Episcopalian lady and they had two children, Julius who died very young, Moritz who was a doctor in New York City, was married twice but had no children, David who married a Catholic lady very late in life and had no children, Helen who married a Max Weill and of whom I have no further information, and Bessie who married Richard Bondy and had three children of who I have lost sight and contact.

Ascher/Isaac Gross had a family in Boston and I have not yet tracked them down or documented them. He married a Zipora/Sophia ?? and had eight children all born between 1862 and 1872 in Boston and for whom I have no further information.

I have obtained significant information on the Königheim roots. It appears the Gross surname was adopted in 1811 under a Ducal Edict issued in 1809 that all the Duchy's Jews were required to have and register surnames.

If you can find your roots here, then we should talk. I can be contacted at philipgross@norcross.ca

A DNA test will break down that brick wall and open doors!

Tired of hitting that brick wall in your research or just want to confirm the research that you already have? This year could be the year you do it! As a co-administator of the Gross Family DNA Project, I want to personally extend an invite to you for the Gross DNA Project. Simply go to the following link and explore what it has to offer: http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=Q29726&am...

You, must be (or find a known relative to be) a DIRECT MALE DESCEDANT OF YOUR SPECIFIC FAMILY WITH THE GROSS SURNAME (or variation). The purpose of the DNA website is to encourage all males with the surname of Gross (or variation in spelling) to join in the DNA project so that it can be determined who they are genetically related and to prove or disprove family pedigrees.

Here is an additional link to answer some common questions: http://www.ftdna.com/faq.html

I have seen first hand what DNA results can do. Just recently, a member of my Jackson family had his DNA tested and linked himself to our proud heritage.

There are researchers who have submitted their DNA are awaiting their results. Why wait? Check the site out, request your kit and see if you can break down that brick wall or confirm your research today!

Her husband died at an early age and most of the children (including 2 sets of twins) died at an early age of common diseases. I believe my grandmother said the family was originaly from Indiana or Illinois. My grandmother, Catherine (Gross) Pelletier, was born on July 29, 1894. She moved to moved to Michigan and married Emile S. Pelletier in November of 1928. One sister did live until the 1960's. Any information would be appreciated. I have many very old pictures, if you think there may be a connection.

I am looking for descendents of Hirsch Gross who was the community leader of the Jews of Könighiem circa 1830. I know of two of his sons - Ascher/Isaac and Raphael - who came to America in 1852 and 1856 - Isaac ended up in Boston operating a fine goods store with his hometown byddy Philip/Vitel Strauss, Raphael eneded up in Worcester, MA running a fine goods shop with his friend from home Leopold/Leo Strauss. Leopold's sister Hannah married Raphael Gross in 1865 at Temple Israel in Boston.

Beard, Gross, and Crane Old Family Bible Records Found!

I have an old family bible. This bible was given to my great grandfather, Oliver Irvin Crane, by his grandmother, Laura “Lucy” A Tapley Beard. Within this bible, she had wrote some of the family genealogy for him. It lists his mother, Anna Beard. It lists his sister, Ethel Ann Crane. It lists his 3 brothers that had died either at birth or within first year of life. And it lists himself, Oliver Irvin Crane. Along with these entries, it lists the following:

Ellen “Lb Ellen” Gross Born: Sept 7, 1857……..spelling of her name was unclear.
Joseph Gross B: Dec 3, 1862
Mary Theoda Gross B: Nov 26, 1867……..name appeared to be Mary.

These 3 individuals are connected to my family. I’m just not sure how these 3 Gross people are connected to me. I just know they are connected in some way. If anyone comes across a connection, relevant information, or possible clues to help me find the connection, I would so appreciate it!!!
Earnest may have been born around 1900. Any information exchange would be welcome. A lot of the Gross family currently live in Louisiana. If you know any members from LA then we may be connected somewhere. Thanks.

I am searching for any information about Susan F Gross born abt 1863 in Louisiana.
in 1878 she married William D Fowler in Van Zandt, texas. they had two children together; a sonb. 1879 van Zandt county, TX, named Edgar Fowler and a daughter bown 1882 Van Zandt county, TX, known only through the 1890 school census as S.L. Fowler.

Susan either lost or divorced William because in May 1884 she married Alonzo C (A.C.) Pennington. Together they had 5 children, most of them were born in Van Zandt county Texas.

Susan and AC headed toward Indian territory/Oklahoma in 1903. She passed away between 1920-1929, as AC shows up as a widower in the 1930 census of Graham, Carter, Oklahoma.

I have a note that I wrote to myself her father and mother may have been James and Sally Gross, but i wrote down no other details or how I came across that thought.

I have no other information on her other than a photograph of her with AC Pennington and their 5 children.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Dowell Gross of Missouri

I am trying to find out if Dowell Gross in the St.Louis, Missouri 1920 census, born abt. 1888 is the father of Dowell Gross of Venice, Illinois in the 1920 census born 1918 in Texas. The mother's name is Fern. I want to know if Fern is Fern Cofield (maiden) of Venice. Fern Cofield eventually married a Max Brandt of Louisiana but I recently found out from a family member of Max that their son Jack was adopted but he thinks only by Max as it was Fern's son by a previous marriage. The age and parent's birth places on Fern Gross match Fern Cofield-Brandt's information and young Dowell and Jack birth years and places are the same. I would like to find a marriage for Fern to someone other than Max to verify that maybe these are the same people. The marriage would have been between 1910 (Fern was still with her parents in that census) and 1918 (birth of her son) Any help on this would be appreciated.

I really need help finding Maud Elma Osborne's mother and/or aunt or I am forever stuck.

Maud Elma Osborne was born 23 Jul 1886 in Tennessee, and died 01 Feb 1965, Bentonville, Benton, Arkansas.

She was married to Richard Allan Hoback, born 1889 in Arkansas.

Maud Elma Osborne (GROSS) didn't know who was her dad because Maud's mother had been raped.

Her mother's sister was married to a man named Osborne. The sister died and Mr. Osborne married Maud's mother to give her a last name.

When Maud was 18 months old her mother died.

She then went to live with her mother's other sister who was married to a man by the name of Gross.

They never adopted her, and they never had children of their own.

After their death they gave their property to Maud. The land stayed in the family until after Maud's death when it was sold to a neighbor.

Thanks for any help.
I am looking for information on Henry Gross and his family. I believe he would have been born about 1800. He had a daughter, Otilda or Otillia who married Anthony Zengler. They lived in St Louis, Missouri. She was born May 7, 1828 and died on February 21, 1919. She was born in Alsace, Lorraine. Her father, Henry Gross, was born in Germany. Her mother was also born in Germany but I do not have her name.

Frank and Anna Gross - Arrived in the US about 1853

I'm new to this board, so please let me know if I'm in the wrong place.

The least known branch of our family involves the Gross family, and I'm hoping somebody here might be able to provide some illumination. We've known for many years that the earliest direct ancestor of mine was Stephen Schmitt and that he followed his sister, Anna, to the United States, arriving in 1857. His sister arrived in New York on the St. Denis on November 21,1853, and this is where the Gross family comes in. Before leaving what later became Germany, she married a man named Frank Gross, who census records state arrived in the US in 1853, as well. He was not listed on the ship that Anna arrived on, so we assume that he traveled separately. From other records, we know that Anna came from Hessen Darnstadt (assuming she came from the same place that her brother came from). They had 6 known children, George (1858), Francis (1859), Emilia (1862), Annie (1864)), Frank (1869), and Louis (1871). The only one of those we know anything about is Emilia, who married August Reder, Sr., and had 3 children, Frank (22 Oct 1893), Anna (Abt. 1889), and August, Jr. (30 Aug 1897). We were told by August, Jr., (before he died in 1974) ) that his father was killed by a runaway wagon about 1910 and that his mother couldn't afford to care for 3 children and put him into the care of the Franciscans. He later became a monk and priest, emerging from the monastary only in the 1960's and going by the name Father Michael Reder when restrictions on outside contact were lifted. The only relative the order could find to connect him with was my grandfather, William A. Schmitt, who was his second cousin. Poring over census data, it appears that Emilia and Anna were living together through the 1920's, but the trail ran cold after that. We also found Frank Reder had married a woman named Anna (b. 1905) sometime before 1930. We don't know if Frank Reder or his sister Anna had children, whether any of Anna and Frank Gross's other children had offspring, or if any of the family survives in the US today.

Does anyone on this list know of anything that would connect to these people or trace through to living people today?

Thanks,

Bill

I would appreciate any information you may have on the Gross/Beach/Hall/Wright surnames and how they link together. I have very little information and no one to go to to even find out. My father James Gross passed away in 1982 I was only 8 years old. Had no contact with his/my family. His parents where/are James Wright and Mable Gross. In the 1930 census I found the Beach and Hall connection. So any information will be a blessing for me. Thanks in advance. I just happened to come across this after 8 hours of looking through stuff. God bless you.
