Re: Peter Groth (Groch) - Buffalo 1851-1935

My grandfather's name was Pal Groch, which he changed to Paul Groh in the U.S. He was from Austro-Hungary. I remember being told that he had a half-brother (named Peter) with whom he'd had bad words with and they never spoke afterward. I've only recently found two things: 1) the original spelling of his name(s), from which I found his obituary, and 2) that he had a half-sister, Mrs. Andrew Dzury, of Cresson, PA.

Paul lived from 1869-1938, so if his half-brother had died in 1935, he wouldn't have necessarily been mentioned in the obit.

I am searching for the Dzury family mentioned now, along with my grandmother's family, which is listed as Duracensky on my dad's birth certificate. Her name on the ship she immigrated on was Katarina Groch, which was changed to Katherine Groh. She was listed as traveling from "Paloma" (possibly Poloma in present-day Slovakia).

I have not found my grandfather's immigration record, but my dad had told me the family had lived in the Bratislava area, and he was listed as living in Cleveland, Ohio, where his wife and daughter were bound. I believe they all traveled to the U.S. before 1900.

Their family was Catholic, and were involved with St. Francis Xavier in McKean, PA. It is not Byzantine, but is the closest Catholic church to where they lived in McKean Township.

Re: Groths from Milwaukee, Wisconsin

I am researching Auguste Groth b. Germany about 1870. She married Gustav Janke. Their children (born 1890-1899 Pommern, Prussia, Germany) Wilhelm, Ida, Elizabeth, Maria. Elizabeth married Otto Stajkowski and moved to Canada. The others moved (1920's) to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, initially joining an uncle and aunt-Herman Kieckbusch b.1865 and wife Augusta b.1868. They immigrated from Pommern, Prussia, Germany 1890. Augusta, who married Herman Kieckbusch is listed by her maiden name on a birth certificate as Augusta Groth. I would think that Auguste and Augusta were sisters even though the names are so similar.

Does anyone know these people? I have other information to share. Thank you, Joan

I have an original studio photograph of three adults in their 20s, “Ezra Marti, Ruth Bettenhausen and Verna Groth”, which I would like to get back to family members of one of the families. Photo was taken in about 1925 in Joliet (Will Co.). Verna looks about upper 20s in the photo.

I found the three children listed in the 1900 census for Frankfort, IL, son of Fred and Carrie Marti. Ezra was 5/12ths of a year, with birthdate of Feb 1900. Verna Marti was listed with birthdate May 1896, and Ruth Marti as Aug 1898.

Email me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Verna Marti Groth or her family

Hi, Cathie ... I am a lady who rescues old photos from antique shops, and attempts to reunite them with families. Yes, there was a Duvenick in the photo. However, I no longer have the photo, inasmuch as another family member claimed it back in February. I make it a policy not to give out the names and email addresses of the people who receive the photos I rescue, so I cannot give you that information. I wish you well in your searches.
