Grove Surname

The GROVE ancestors of my family seem to have been of
Irish/English decent. My dad said.... that g'dad always said Dutch Irish . G'dad was Grove in Pa., later adding 's' he said co-workers used in Alabama. Origin are also found in references within The GROFF Book (Vol. 2).
by Jane Evans Best. This is a great book, with
278 pages of research and History.

I didn't personally have access to the Groff Book until
about Nov, '08. Had done mine the 'hard way' since about'97. Glad I did my research 'as done' because I
was a total rookie, knowing less than 'nothing' about
Ancestry. Being the familys' youngest helped as
older siblings had asked some of my questions. I joined
a Genealogy Soc, and learned about resources for info.,
and about posting inquiries on the web.
I met (on the webb) 5 cousins never known of. One from
Syracuse is now a close friend; families visited twice.
The book confirmed my own research and would have been
easy to copy. But NOW, I am happy because of new 'friends'
in the cousins I've been in contact with. BGroves 09/04/2009.
Re: Is the Grove surname of German origin?

Good question.. One that I had never thought about until reading this. In Norway, Grove brod is a form of wholemeal bread and I have seen Grove in Holland referring to whole grain mustard, both I suppose containing unprocessed or rough grains. Norwegian and dutch are as germanic as they come. So perhaps it has a germanic origin but if so it may be very old perhaps saxon or old english. I can't recall ever seeing it as a german surname but clearly it is not that unusual in modern england.
Interesting and food for thought?

So, I have done tons of research to find that my ancestors were a William S. Grove (born 1817 in Ohio) and later to his father Thomas Grove (born 1792 in Virginia). I can't, however, find anymore information on them. I found their names on censuses, voter lists, and other pieces of documentation, but there is no solid concrete evidence that they were related. I haven't found a will, or any papers that showed concrete they were related. Does anyone have any information on these folks? Let me know! Thanks!

I might not be able to find land patents for Highland County because it fell in the Virginia Military District. The lands claimed in the district were for Virginians who served in the revolution, which the Groves were from Virginia so that is a possibility.

If that is the case, the land patents for these lands would not be in the possession of the state of Ohio but rather the state of Virginia, or even Congress. This might be possible could it not?

Okay, I appreciate the help! You say you are looking for a George and Hannah Grove? Do you know if they were ever in Ohio or even Highland County Ohio. Like I said I have found documents with their family on it, would you be interested in such documents?

In Highland County, Ohio I have seen a number of document with George and Hannah Groves names on them. Maybe this is your relation?

I have checked a number of sources, even going to the county courthouse but have found no military pensions. Census records indicate they owned a vast amount of land, so it boggles my mind that they wouldn't have a will or anything. If only there was a family bible or something.

James Wesley Grove b June 1866 in Ohio was married to Alice Amanda Baker in 1893 in Illinois. They lived in Ogle County, Illinois per the 1900 census and then moved to Marshall County, Iowa in 1910 where Alice died. By 1920 James Wesley Grove moved to Oregon with his three children, Clark, Maynard, and Violet and he died in Corvallis, Oregon in 1952. He is buried in the Crystal Lake Cemetery in Corvallis. His birthdate of June 1866 is on the 1900 census.

There was another James W Grove(s) who was born in Hocking and stayed there for what looks to be his whole life. His father appears to be a Henry though...not Augustus.

Much of your information for Albert Grove matches my information, though the children are different. I would love to compare more notes with you.

hmmm - not sure. I know Bureau of Land Management has an awesome site, but it doesn't and won't include 13 colonies - so that takes out Virginia - but on the other hand I know that Kentucky, has an awesome webpage ( http://www.sos.ky.gov/land/ )that has images of Rev War land patents, even when they have been passed from one person to the other. Unfortunately I don't know that much about what Ohio has to offer. If its Va, then you might try the Library of VA's webpage.

The County was named for the ridge there that divided the Little Miami River and Scioto River's watersheds.

this links has a lot of land patents: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov but I didn't see ANY (not just GROVE/S) for Highland county. and no Grove% in Ross or Clermont counties. I wonder if they are through putting up the Ohio patents.

Julie

Mine certainly is not. I can trace back to Sussex in the UK
about 1700. Although different records give the name as Grove or sometimes Groves. A book I once saw gave Pershore, Worcestershire as the origin of Grove, Groves, and Grover.
Today the largest concentration of Grove's is Sussex.

Lewis S. Grove

I believe Lewis S. Grove was born in 1812 in Licking County, Ohio and is a brother to my great great great grandfather, Thomas Grove born 1/16/1806 in Pennslyvania. There were also two other brothers, George Grove born 10/2/1793 and Joseph Grove born 1/2/183 both born in Pennsylvania. They were sons of George and Susannah Grove of Pennsylvania. Have not been able to go back any further than this. Thomas had a son named Lewis S. Grove born 3/28/1844 in Wells County, Indiana. It is possible that this line orginated from Hans Graf Jr. aka John Grove whose father was born in Switzerland-Not proven-Richard M.Groves
