James Thomas Grubbs

My great grandfather, James Thomas Grubbs, married Nellie (Margaret Ellen Kirkpatrick) in Arkansas during the late 1800's. He was about 16 and she was 14. She had one brother that I know of that lived in Houston, TX at the time and they moved there so he could work for the railroad industry. My great grandfather had a brother that I know of and his name was Elvin (or Elvan) Grubbs. They had one daughter, my grandmother Violet Mae Grubbs (Bracht after she married). I would like to find out more about both of my grandparents if possible. I do know her descendants came from Ireland and his from England but he also (from what I was told) has some Choctaw Indian roots as well.)

Yes, I know about the line. A lot of my relatives are card carrying direct descendant choctaw. I believe it comes from Betsy or Elizabeth McLaughlin (?) that what a legal document approved by the Choctaw nation legalizing Elizabeth and Curtis' children. Not sure why they would need to do that. However; marriages in the Nation weren't always well documented. Don't necessarily go by the percentage of blood on the Dawes an older relative told me that they probably lied about the percentage because during that time full blood indians were not treated well. So truth be known John was probably 1/4. It really doesn't matter the percentage mine is very small but I can trace it directly back to the Dawes roll and that is what the Choctaw nation recognizes. Email me at mtrixie2009@gmail.com and we can talk more.

Hi,
I am also descended from Curtis and Betsy Grubbs, but from their daughter, Mary Jane. She married James Johnston and they were the parents of my great great grandfather John Dawson Johnston. I'm having trouble tracing the Choctaw blood in that family. I believe that John and his brother were only listed as 1/8 on the Dawes Roll but what confuses me is that John's descendants, myself, my father, my grandmother, and my great grandmother have a lot of Indian qualities but if John was only 1/8, I think it would be unusual for us to be so Native American-like. My grandmother was even offered a house on the reservation so there must be a decent amount of Choctaw blood. Do you know anything about Curtis or about John Dawson's wife? I'm sorry for troubling you with such a long reply! Any information you may have is greatly appreciated and I will also work on this and let you know what I find. Thank you!

Re: Grubbs of Pittsburgh, PA and Easton, PA

I am replying to my own post with notes on the research I've done since, showing that Jacob Grubs of Pittsburgh is most likely the son of Andrew Grubs of Forks near Easton, PA. Hoping someone will come across it at some time, have the patience to read through the notes, and can comment with additional research. Many thanks.

My notes on the Grubbs Line:
Many public member trees of Pittsburgh Grubbs follow their ancestry back to Jacob Grubb, son of Christian Grubb or Kropf, of Virginia. However, one of the first Grubb brothers to settle in the frontier lands north of Pittsburgh is Philip Grubbs, likely brother of our Conrad Grubbs. In an 1833 application for a Revolutionary War Pension, Phillip states that he was born near Easton, PA.

It is possible that our Pittsburgh Grubbs brothers and their father, Jacob, are descended from one of 4 Grubbs brothers that immigrated with their father, Christian Sr, in 1729 on the ship “Allen”. I have no definitive proof of the link other than name and age range similarities. The brothers are Christian Jr, Jacob, Andrew, and Daniel. It looks like Jacob and Andrew went to Easton, and perhaps also Christian Sr. (I have a vague memory of reading a name similar to Christian’s in a listing of Easton’s first militia, but can’t find the source again or even remember what type of source I found it in.) Daniel may have gone to Chester County PA, and Christian Jr to Virginia.

Who we are looking for is Jacob Grubbs Sr that shows up in Pittsburgh with his sons around 1785, who had a son named Philip born about 1765. To confuse the ancestry Christian Jr, Jacob and Andrew all had sons named Jacob, and it appears the two Easton Grubbs (Jacob and Andrew) had grandsons named Philip. Luckily they went to different Easton churches.

Christian Jr’s son, Jacob, could not be our Pittsburgh Jacob as he was already living in Virginia and serving in the VA militia at the time Philip says he was born near Easton.

Jacob’s son, Jacob Jr is not likely our Pittsburgh Jacob, as it looks like he remained in Easton and died there in 1810. He married Maria Hess, they attended St John Lutheran Church (scans of record book available on Ancestry.com). There is a Philip Grub in these records who was baptizing children at this church as early as November 1779. These children are too old to be our Philip’s children, see Philip’s Pittsburgh 1800 census info (he has 5 children under the age of 10 and no household members between the ages of 10 and 25 – a young family in 1800). In both 1800 and 1810 Pittsburgh censuses our Philip is under the age of 44, making him at most 34 in 1800, or born at the earliest 1766 – too young to be having children in 1779.

Andrew and his son, Jacob, are most likely our ancestors. Andrew also went to Easton, but it appears he ended up a bit north of town at Forks Township and attended the First Reformed Church of Easton (Listed on ancestry.com as the First United Church of Easton, scans of original record books available). Note that in the pension application Philip says he was born “near” Easton. A Philip is baptized here to Jacob and Elizabeth Grubs in 1766, and is the likely match with our Pittsburgh Philip. Also, Andrew is listed as a grandparent in another baptism at this same church.

A Jacob Grub married Elizabeth Koch at the Tohickon Reformed Church, Bucks County, PA. in 1760, and baptized a son, John, there in 1761. Our John would have been born about this time, according to Pittsburgh census info. They are accepted by many public trees as the Jacob and Elizabeth Grubs, parents of our Pittsburgh brothers and the Jacob Sr in the 1790 and 1800 Pittsburgh Censuses. I have not found anything to dispute this assumption. Ancestry.com has digitized this book with records listed:
(Hinke: A History of the Tohickon Union Church…with Copy of the Church Records…Meadville, PA 1925, PA German Society, Tribune Publishing).
(also see “Bucks County Pennsylvania Church Records of the 17th and 18th Century by F.Edward Wright, probably volume 1”).

Jacob Grub and Elizabeth can also be found in church records for the First Reformed Church of Easton. In Ancestry.com it is listed in PA Church and Town Records as the “First United Church of Easton” and includes scans of the original church record book pages. Early entries are in very difficult German and/or Latin manuscript and are not indexed by Ancestry.com. For English translations of these early records see downloadable (archive.org) out-of-copyright ebook (also available in Ancestry.com’s system):
“Some of the First Settlers of the ‘Forks of the Delaware’ and their Descendants” (Keiffer 1902). The following Grub records appear in this book. These records are in German/Latin and are extremely difficult to read in the original scans on Ancestry.com:

[Records between 1763 and 1766 are virtually nonexistent]

Pg 83: John Philip Born July 5, 1766 to Jacob Grub and Elizabetha (Ancestry.com pg 77, original manuscript recordbook pg 48/49)
Pg 89: Peter Born July 30, 1768 to Jacob Grub and Elizabeth (Ancestry.com pg 82, original ms recordbook pg 58/59).

[Records from 1769 to 1776 are spotty due to there being no pastor, this is when Conrad, Andrew, and George would have been born]

Pg 102: March 22, 1778 Philip Grub, listed as single, serves as a baptismal sponsor (Ancestry.com pg 92, original ms recordbook pg78/79)
Pg 104: March 1, 1779 Andreas and Elizabetha Grub, grandparents, also serve as sponsors (Ancestry.com pg 93, original ms recordbook pg 80/81)

Grubbs of Pittsburgh

I am researching the earliest Grubbs settlers in the Depreciation Lands north of Pittsburgh, namely Jacob Grubbs (b: abt 1745) and his sons: Jacob Jr, John, Philip, Conrad, Andrew, and George. I notice many public trees trace their ancestry to Christian Grubbs of Virginia, but have found in a Revolutionary War Pension application for Philip that he was from Easton, PA.

see: Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty-Land Warrant Application Files, 1800-1900 Record for Philip Grubbs.
G > Gregory, Joshua - Gwynn, John > Grub, Darius - Guernsey, Southmayd > 274

I have found Jacob Grotz and Maria Hess in Easton, PA histories as well as a Jacob Grubbs and Elizabeth in church records for the First Reformed Church of Easton. I wonder if anyone has researched the origins of the Pittsburgh Grubbs.

Thank you so much for the information..your great-great grandfather Emanuel G. Grubbs married Caroline Elizabeth "Carrie" Waters, your great-great grandmother. Carrie had a brother James Alexander Waters, James had a son Grover Cleveland Waters, and Grover had a son Bernie Waters who married Annie Jewel Williams. The best I can figure Bernie would be like a 3rd or 4th cousin...my genealogy program says he is your 1st cousin twice removed...:)I worked on my Grubbs information all day yesterday trying to get everything in order, that's years of just stuffing everything in an envelope!!

I am so glad you found my message..I have been working on the Grubbs-Waters genealogy for quiet a while, and should have all of my information in order in a month or so..I would be happy to send you a copy of everything I have, some pictures of Carrie Waters Grubbs, and others. Alyce Grubbs Mattingly sent me quiet a lot before her death. I have been slow getting it all together, and still have a few loose ends. I met Gam once in Alabama, and then again in Port Arthur at my aunt's house. Would you mind sharing his wife's maiden name, date of birth and death, and their children's names?
I have not been able to find this information....I have Gam's information, and quiet a bit on the rest of the family. Again, so happy to hear from you.....Sondra

Hi, I am trying to find which Grubb/Grubbs/Grub I am descended from. My maternal grandfather was born and raised in northern VA, near Dranesville on a farm. I can only get back to his grandfather, then I'm stuck. (I'm pretty sure they didn't fall out of the sky and land there.) Different Grubbs' came in to the US from apparently very early.
You mention a book "Grubbs Family History". Did you ever find it in storage. There are a couple in a local library, but may be different from yours.
My mother only said "they were an early Virginia family", but who knows what exactly that means.
Any help would be appreciated.
I will list the names here, if you have any interest:
the earliest I can absolutely connect is Edward Augustus Grubbs (1818-?)
m.Amanda F. Deel (1826-?)
children: Augustine S. (1851-1914), Margaret (1853-?), Richard (1854-?)
Augustine S. m. Sara Catherine Keller (1855-1944)
children: Claude A. (1879-1964), Norbert (1881-1967), Terrell B. (1884-1967), Julian K. (1888-1965), Eva A. (1891-1974), Ella Acton (1895-1920),
Irene (1897-?).
My grandfather was Terrell B. Grubbs.

Thanks, Diane Davies

I'm looking for some information on Shultz L. Grubbs, my great-great uncle on my mom's side. Specifically, I'd like confirmation of the spelling of his middle name, and also the origin of his middle name (i.e., was it a family name?).

My maiden name is Lephiew, so I'm curious as to whether this uncle on my mom's side also has connections to my dad's side, which would imply my parents might be distant cousins!

I've seen his middle name spelled both with and without the "I" but either way, I don't believe this is a name a mother just makes up, so there has to be some connection.

Thanks!

I am pretty sure that the Benjamin Grubbs this line refers to is from Indian territory or mississippi with definite choctaw blood and definitely is on the dawes rolls.

James Thomas Grubbs, Hanover County, Va.

Looking for verification on James Thomas Grubbs, son of Benjamin Grubbs and Sarah Tucker. He is listed as a son in Family 235, Southeastern District in the 1850 census of Hanover County and his age is 4. He is listed as a son in Family 454, Saint Paul’s Parish in the 1860 census of Hanover County and his age is 13.

I have seen him referenced as marrying Willie Ann Baskett and both being interred in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia. If he is the husband of Willie Ann, his birthdate has shifted to April, 1849 in Family 210 the 1900 census of Marshall Ward, Richmond. His birthdate is given as October 10, 1850 on his marker in Hollywood Cemetery.

There is another James T. Grubbs who was in the 4th VA. Cav., Co. G, Hanover Troop and is interred in a private cemetery in Rockville, Hanover County, no dates given.

I show several James Grubbs in central Virginia, is it possible some of the info has been mixed together??

Thanks,

Michael Tyler
William Fleming Mallory was my 3great grandfather. My family papers document that his parents were John Mallory and Elizabeth Grubbs. I think that we are missing something. My great grandmother Cecil Beatrice Mallory used to say that her family was descended from the House of Stewart and from Pocahontas. I have never found these connections. I note, however, that Judge William Mallory was descended from them. He was born in Virginia in the 1730's. I suspect that William Fleming Mallory's mother or one of his grandmothers was a descendant of William Mallory. I have never been able to find a parent for Elizabeth Grubbs.

John Grubbs at Grubbs Landing 1692 - County Delaware, PA

I'm looking for information about John Grubbs from Grubbs Landing - according to my grandmother, listed on a land warrant from William Penn along "Mar... Creek" north from King's road.

I haven't established the link yet,my grandmother's cousin did the research in the 1950s and I don't have any of his papers. The closest link I have documented in David Alexander Grubbs b. 1823 in Maryland, USA - married to Mary Jane Brown born in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1825. - quite a gap there between the two individuals. I'm trying to work backwards but am stuck with David Alexander. I would appreciate any help or information. I'm still kind of new at this. Too bad I couldn't get the cousin's papers but he's been gone since I was a child.
