My Grubers were from Austria, but some of the manifests said "Jugoslavia."

We have a Johann Gruber born abt 1880 who married Maria Loser. They referred to their home as "Gotchee" or "Gottschee" and the family was "Gottscheer."

They moved to NYC as many of their countryman did. Of the children Maria, Ogla, John, and Anna, it seems only John and Anna came to NY. I cannot find any connection prior to the parents in Austria. Do these names ring a bell with any of you?

I have good information on Peter Gruber (born 1773, died 1839.) His wife was Sarah Guilden. He came to Ohio from Manheim, Berks County, Pennsylvania (other records say Switzerland). He died and was buried in Wood County, Ohio.
I have visited the cemetery and I have pictures. Please contact me if this is the family you are looking for. I have no information on Peter's parents. At about that time and in Berks County, Christian Gruber is the ancestor of a recorded family tree. Our Peter is not part of Christian's line.

Well, I have good news! I found Ioannes Rauch, born 22 Nov 1871, baptized 22 Nov 1871, son of Ioannes Rauch and Anna Verner, commoners, rom. cath, lived at Fakert No. 1. The godparents were Andrea Schlee and Anna Hoflinger, commoners. The two families are multiple times each other's godparents for their children. It appears that Ioannes Rauch and Anna Verner were married at the end of 1857. Before 1863 they lived at Fakert No. 71, then moved to Fakert No. 1. So Ioannes Rauch must have been born before 1840, while Anna Verner before 1842. If you can give me the e-mail, I'll send you the baptism record and what I found... They had many kids, including twins, but many of them died.

I cannot find Theresia Gruber, even thogh there are many Grubers.

Cheers,
Dan (dan_draggon at hotmail)

For Theresia, I have her father listed as George Gruber, but I cannot recall where I found that information. For Janos/John, I show his father with the same name and his mother is listed as Anna Weaver. I have not worked on this branch of my tree for awhile, so any information would be wonderful.

If it would be helpful,I could order the death certificates for Theresia and John. Often, mothers and fathers are listed.

Thanks!

I found the following posted on Grubers of South Carolina.

My grandfather John Henry Gruber born 11-20-1841 died 11-22-1922 in Columbia S.C. married Sally Bell Autry of Swainboro, Ga. Born 7/12/1879 died 6/30/1951.

I have a picture of Henry Gruber, and his wife Sally Gruber. Was Sally his second wife? My gr-grandmother was Mary Nancy Gruber, married John Allen Smith, Henry and Sally Gruber are listed as her parents. Mary Nancy Gruber was born 10/30/1866 and died 11/8/1945. So she could not be Sally’s natural daughter But could have been John Henry Gruber’s daugther. My grandfather was the oldest son of Mary Nancy Gruber and John Allen Smith, his name was George Henry Smith. I am not sure this is the same Henry and Sally Gruber and I don’t know where they lived. Mary Nancy Gruber had a brother, Marion Gruber. Marion lived in Newberry, SC. Mary Nance and John Allen Smith lived between Batesburg- Leesville and Prosperity, SC.

Andrea
Sclahiga@aol.com
Hi,
I realize this is an old post, but hopefully your still working on this thread of information.
Fred is Alfred J. "Fred" Gruber, son of Nicholas Gruber and Charlotte Shoup Gruber. Born: June of 1869 in most likely Van Buren Township, Newton County, Missouri which is where the family was living in the 1870 Fed. Census. I just recently was able to prove that Fred Gruber died August 17, 1943 in King County, Washington. Jennie was still living at that time.
I know very little of Jennie L. [--?--] born about 1870 in Illinois. From my guesstimate they were married about 1895 but for sure unknown. If they had children of this I am unaware. Per 1900 and 1910 census they had no children.
Hoping to hear from you.
Sincerely, Evleta Gruber

Glad there's a connection. Here's my main question - It seems Anna May Cole (1905-1962) married relatively late in life; she was probably in her 40's. When she died in 1962, her obit listed four children, 2 daughters who were married, and 2 sons. It seems unlikely that the girls were her natural children. Do you know if Albion was married before Anna May?

She lived in Atlanta until the late 1940's yet it seems Albion was in Savannah all his life. Can you shed any light?

Re: Albion Gruber, South Carolina to Savannah

Hello again. I expect to be home (Rochester) late tonight. I can get more information there. However, as you ased, yes, Albion was very talented in music. After leaving Savannah he came to Rochester to teach music. He taught theory, orchestration, history and composition at Nazareth College for 33 years. He directed the orchestra there for many years. He retired at age 61 (I should say WE retired at that time, though I was only 45 at the time.)

To back up, Albion married Charlotte Mary Barnard from Cedar Rapids Iowa and had six children: Doris, Clay, Rosalind, John, Damian, and Dana. I'm giving only first names, of course. The marriage ended after, I believe, seventeen years. Some time later, Albion and I married in 1978. We were married 25 years when he passed away. I believe I have a phone number for Bill back at home. He taught English and directed a drama department in Atlanta for a long time. His first love was always boats. He went on to become quite a mariner, transporting yachts for the wealthy across the ocean to wherever. I'm sure he would love to hear from you. I will get his number. Norma passed away some years ago after having contracting Encephalytis. She was married to Russell Audesey. They had three children, Norma, Connie and Rusty. They lived in Ft. Walton Beach. Doris was married to John Mullings and they had nine children. I will have to look at my charts to give all their names in order. They lived in Landover Hills Maryland, but Doris has moved to North Carolina -- Greensboro, I believe. As I said, I will be happy to correspond with more information. Family histories are so interesting. Thanks for answering. Martha Gruber

Hello, I am Albion's wife. My name is Martha. My husband, Albion Matthew (Ally Jr.) passed away from cancer in December of 2002. But to answer your question, The oldest of the siblings was Norma. The next oldest was Doris. Albion was the third born. Their brother, Bill, is married to Kathy DeSloover and they live in the Atlanta area. Doris's husband, John Mullings is no longer lving, but Doris is. I can get her address for you shortly. I am not at home at this time, but when I return I can get it for you. I do have a family chart which Albion had put together. It also is at home (Rochester, NY). If you are interested, I will happily share what information I have. I know Albion had an uncle Marion. I assume you are connected there?

I can't trace my genealogy to the Gruber family, but I have some reasons to suspect I may be genetically related. I am interested in finding men with the Gruber surname who can trace their ancestry to either Williamsport (Washington Co.), MD or Baltimore City, MD in 1884 or earlier. My objective would be to compare our Y-chromosomes to see if we possibly have a common male ancestor. I have not been able to find any Gruber family Y-DNA studies - would be pleased to know of one.

Susan Leona Gruber is the Daughter of Martin and Leopauldina Leona Gruber, they settled in Cook Illionis in the early 1900's. Martin and Leopauldina (Paula) came from austria through ellis island. Susan married Clifford Lee Felix and later moved to Prince George's Co. Maryland. It is really important to post first names and related family to help searchers to look for your family. What records do you have about this family? Have you found their ship manifests?

You posted the following on the Austria-General message board: "Looking for GRUBER from Austia late 1800's or early 1900's. May have lived on south side of Chicago. Grandaughter Lorraine married DOWIARTZ in Chicago."

Was Lorraine Artz the grand daughter of Anna Pelzer, whose parents were the Grubers? Was Lorraine the daughter of Richard and Anna Pelzer Artz? Did Lorraine Artz marry Steven Dowiarz? The death certificate and marriage records of Anna GRUBER Pelzer will have the names of her parents. Did Anna GRUBER marry Lawrence Pelzer in Austria or in America? Without documentation to connect the generations, this is a difficult task. You will need to ascertain the exact town in Austria where Anna GRUBER was born in order to order LDS microfilm to find her family.

Cook County death certificates:
http://www.cookctyclerk.com/

In the 1910 Census, 1610 W. 15th St., Ward 11, Chicago, Anna Pelzer 30, b. abt. 1880, in Austrian occupied Germany, married to Lawrence J. Pelzer, 30, b. abt. 1880 in Austrian occupied Germany; married eleven years. Lawrence immigrated to the US in 1885; Anna immigrated in 1889. Anna had borne 5 children, 4 living in 1910, all born in Illinois: Lawrence A., 10; Anna G., 8; Mary, 5; George 3. Marriage not listed in Illinois database of marriages through 1900, though marriage could have occurred outside Illinois in the US or in Austria before immigration.
http://www.ilsos.gov/GenealogyMWeb/marrsrch.html

In the 1920 Census, 4738 N. Kedvale, Ward 27, Chicago, Lorenz Pelzer, 40, immigrated from Austria in 1885; pressman at printing company; Anna, 40, wife, immigrated from Austria in 1885; both became citizens in 1891; mother tongue for both Lorenz and Anna was German. If you have any other info on the Grubers you can share I would appreciate it. Thanks Marion

Hi Martha, I appreciate you replying to my letter, my Father was Marion,Sr.,Ally Jr.'s Uncle. I would like very much if you would send me the info you said you had on the Grubers. Everyone has scattered so much. If you also have any phone numbers I would love to try and call them. I have lived in Savannah all my life as has my 3 sisters(Florence,Mary,Dale)and brother(Walter). I remember Bill used to come out to our house at Isle of Hope and borrow my Dad's boat and go rowing for hours. I am married (Linda) with 2 children and 2 grandchildren. I had one son that died when he was 18. My email address is mgruber@bellouth.net and phone no. is 912 925-8348. I work part-time at funeral and have met people who knew Ally,Jr. I have always been told about his musical talent and would like to know more about his accomplishments. Thanks again and if you ever get to Savannah please call us as we would love to meet you. Marion,Jr.

Grubers in Austria/Wisconsin/Minnesota

My great great grandfather, Georg Gruber, was born 3 Apr 1821 in Austria. He married Franziska Schlosser, born in Austria 9 Mar 1827. Their children, also born in Austria, were Robert, born 22 Mar 1852; Joseph, born Mar 1857; and Rosa, born 17 Aug 1862. They immigrated to Vermont, Dane County, Wisconsin, via NYC, in 1864. Georg and Franziska moved to Pierz, Minnesota in 1879/1880, along with their son, Robert, and his wife, Rosa Miller Gruber. Georg died 1 Jan 1883; Franziska died 5 Jun 1905. I would appreciate any help/information on them in Austria or about any other family members.
