Oops, should have read through all the postings before I posted...it answered one of my questions. Hmmm? Oberhausen huh? Oberhausen is indeed not far from Frankfurt; however, there is another in Germany. The other Oberhausen ist in the Neuburg-Schrobenhausen district in Bavaria about 10km from Neuburg. If I would have to guess I would guess that is it. Another question...I've got Valentin Guck Sr. and Dorthea landing in New York on 2. Aug. 1866 instead of 1863?...just a confirmation to make sure its the same person :)

Anyway, anyone with info please get in touch with me. I'm going to Germany to study in July and would love to confirm this, visit, and see how far I can dig to the geneology.

Gucks noch einmal

Sharon (or anyone else that can help),

I've heard that you have done some research on the Gucks (Dan from the earlier post is my father). I'd be extremely interested in the information you have found if you are interested in sharing. I'm in the process of searching high and low for any information leading back to Germany. I've been able to track everything down leading back to the ship over which was all easy to find. From there everything is a dead end other than that Valentin Guck Sr. and family came from Oberbayern. If I can find out what town they came from I have the ability to contact churches in Germany to hunt down family lineage (churches in Germany kept excellent records). Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Karen, Sounds like you and I are relatives. My grandfather was Rudolf Guck, married to Gustava Guck. I believe his brother was your father. We grew up in Price Hill, Cincinnati OH and used to swim at Phillips club sometimes with Fred and Marlene (?) in the summer. They were both older than any of us. We didn't visit with Aunt Rose's family much, not sure why as we were raised in the same vincinity. My grandfather, Rudy owned the Arcade Cafe on Vine street with Frederick before I was born. That's where my mother, Geneva, met my father, Louis Haar. Hope your stll following this thread, as I just found it and your message is near 7yrs old. I still live in Cincinnati area.

Edward L. Guck was my father. I still live in Houston, Texas. Along with my younger brother John. Jill of FL is my aunt. We have several Roses.
As far as I can tell, there are 4 disctinct lines here in Rochester alone.
I do think that they are all related however.

I am looking for the location of Jacob Guck residing in Illinois from about Feb. 1860 to Nov 1861. My Great Grand Father, Christian Simmers, worked for him, and I have been trying to locate Christian in the 1860 census. His journal indicates he was in or about Astoria and Canton, Fulton Co, Illinois during that period and he was working for Jacob. Can't seem to locate either of them in the census.

Actually I am a widow and it was my husband (and children) who are related to you, but I have done some research on the family. The family came from Bavaria in 1862 and Valentin homesteaded in in Stearns Co. near Rice, MN (St Cloud). There were a large number of children (I have all their names if you are interested) of whom your ancestor, Valentine, was the oldest. Our family ancestor, Leo, was one of 6 year old twins at the time of immigration. My son, John Guck, of Fairfield, Iowa has a lot of information as well as the Perham group genealogy given him by someone in Perham --maybe Dennis Guck?? All of these Gucks from Bavaria are from Central Minnesota. Valentin Guck, our immigrant ancestor, came from Oberhausen, Germany in 1862 and homesteaded in Stearns Co. MN. Oberhausen, which is north of Frankfort, is not now in Bavaria but was in that province in 1862 before the unification of Germany. I have a fair genealogy on this family.
