Herman Guenter in Texas

I'm looking for information both prior and subsequent for Herman Guenter(Guenther, Guenthner, Guentner, etc) who immigrated to Texas arriving 1885 probably via the port of Galveston. With him was his first wife Amelia Marie Breckman/Blakeman and at least 2 children. Amelia died around 1893. He married Henrietta Wolf Foss 1894 who already had children from her first marriage. Her children were Herbert, Oscar and Walter Foss. Herman's children were Joe, Gussie, Ella and Lizzie Guenter.

Herman Guenter was born in Germany 11 Jun 1846 and died 8 Mar 1912 in Burnet County, Texas. He and his second wife Henrietta Wolf Foss Guenter are buried on private land SE of Marble Falls, TX. Hermand and Henrietta had 2 children Fritz William and Della Guenter.

Herman's daughter Gussie is my ggrandmother who told a story that they are related to the Guenther's of San Antonio who own Pioneer Mills, though I've never been able to find the connection and best I can tell Herman spelled his name Guenter.

Frederick Guenther (1829- ), landscape gardener, Park Avenue and Brighton, New York

I am interested in the life and work of Frederick Guenther, the landscape gardener, who immigrated to the United States in 1852. He settled in Rochester, New York, where we worked for the firm of Ellwanger and Barry. There he met Helena Hanson. They had two children Frederick and Elizabeth. Frederick, Jr. married Liliam Houser of Rochester. They had a daughter Mattie born March 14, 1892. Frederick, Sr. apparently maintained offices on Park Avenue and greenhouses in Brighton, New York, near his residence.

Kurt Culbertson
120 East Main
Aspen, Colorado 81611

Re: LUDWIG GUNTHER OF CINTI. OH

My new e-mail address is vlp681@yahoo.com for anyone who thinks they may have a connection to the Gunthers/Guenthers
of Cincinnati. Since I made this post I have since learned that Ludwig (Louis) was married to another lady before Margaretha. Ludwig and this other lady were the parents of Oscar and possibly William, too. Margaretha (who I have since learned her maiden name was Zimmermann)married Louis Guenther in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1865. Margaretha was definitely the mother of my great-grandfather, Louis Guenther, and all his younger siblings mentioned in my original post. Margaretha died in February, 1910 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Oscar married a lady by the name of Emma Stein in Cincinnati and they had 3 boys (their oldest child was named Oscar). Sadly Emma died. Oscar married again in 1889. He and his new wife (Catherine or Kate) took his 3 boys to California (Los Angeles area)and settled there. In 1890 the couple had a daughter, Helen (who married a man with the surname Matthews), who was born in California. I'd be most interested in exchanging information with anyone who is connected with Oscar Guenther's family that settled in California. Perhaps through them I can learn the name of the senior Oscar's mother and through her I may be able to find more clues to help me in my search to find out what part of Germany my Guenthers of Cincinnati came from.

Please write me at my e-mail address if you have connections with my Guenthers of Cincinnati and/or California. Thanks so much!

I think we have communicated before but in looking up some of your more recent postings there are a lot of coincidences .My GGrandparents were William & Catherine Guenther .They ran a saloon on North St. in Buffalo .It was located where, what is now a parking lot for Roswell Hospital. My grandmother was also Catherine nee Guenther .She married Adam Herd .They had daughters Catherine /Margaret/Anna/Julia/Loretta & sons Joseph (my father) & George .For some reason my father changed his name to Herb around 1917 .As far as I know my GGrandmother's mauden name was Baron . My Guenther family is the same as Russ Flleischman's .I see you have corresponded with him .Also with Don Herb .That really got my attention .As I said I believe we have shared some info before but I have taken a break from research for a while so I am not up on all names .Let me know if any of this may fit with you .
Thanks for clarification
I have two Guenther families one changed to Gottlob Gunther came 1854 with wife and son Charles to Erie Co pa and Gustave who's name was changed to Ginther ended up in Elk Co pa in 1878. Pittsburg area is about 100 miles south of Erie Pa and Elk Co not that far either
Thanks so much for your time. Be certain when checking records to use all spellings as Gottlob Guenther was spelled Guenther Gunther Ginther and Ginder in the same city ( Erie as well as Kinder) on Census records as well as yearly city directories. seens every year it was spelled differently even his children If I would not have know the childrens names from family history I would have certainly been confused or missed them intirely
Thats so cool about Wally. I will keep your names in mind when I am searching. Still after all these years can't find all Gottlob Guenthers children. Charles Francis born 1853 Germany Frank Edward born 1855 Erie Robert Fredrick 1863 Erie. these 3 I have found, But William Arthur Gunther b 1868 Erie and Richard Gunther born 1858 Erie, Are my brick walls. Both disapeared after the 1880 census I don't believe they stayed in the area. Neither are buried on any of the family plots. It seems they moved after thier father died in 1893 Good luck with hunting and if I run across yours will certainly let you know

Johannes Guenther & family--H-D; IL; MO

Hi,

Has anyone determined what became of Johannes Guenther, b. 1787-aft.1850, his wife Anna Maria (Mary), b. ca. 1805-aft. 1870, and their daughter Anna Maria (Mary), b. 1828-aft. 1850? They're living in St. Louis, 5th ward in the 1850 census as John, Mary, and Mary Genther; also with them is a Charles Freber (Fauber? Freiber?), b. in MO ca. 1847. I'm assuming this is Anna Maria's kid, but am wondering why the last names are different. Can't figure out where any of the Guenthers are in 1860; their son Henry Guenther is supposedly living in Monroe Co., IL with his wife Bernadine & son Charles, but haven't had much luck tracking any of them down. I'm descended from Henry & Bernadine and I have other dates and locations for them, but this 1860 census mystery really bugs me. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Angel Bates-Smith

Cindy,

Yes, the Charles Guenther (father Henry) who lived in Washington Co., MO is my great-grandfather's older brother.

Haven't heard about your Mary Guenther and the Beckers being related to my branch, but who knows? I FINALLY discovered where my Guenther clan lived in 1860--Columbia, IL. Their names were butchered pretty badly in the census, and both ancestry.com & heritage quest, among others, have transcribed the names very differently. It took forever, even with computers and fancy ways of searching, to figure it out.

I've wondered if the Monroe Co., IL Guenthers are all somehow related, esp. the ones that originated in Hesse-Darmstadt. I really have no idea how common the name is/was. The only Mary Guenthers in my family that I know of were born in 1805, 1828, and 1867. Thanks for your input, it may come in handy some day.

Angel Bates-Smith

Those names aren't familiar, but I have just begun exploring the Guenther name. The information that I gave on my previous post was taken from a 1920 marriage record that I located at the Buffalo library while visiting there in July. It is a marriage between Raymond Vincent Hughes and Edna Emma Steinagle. Edna's mother was listed as Rose Guenther (born in Germany) and her father as Louis Steinagle (born in Buffalo, NY). It was witnessed by Miss Martha Guenther and George Steinagle.

Their daughter was born 1875 in Waterloo, Monroe County, IL, Mary Becker, and she's my great great grandmother.

If you go out to http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates/

and look for Charles Guenther in Washington County, his dad's name was Henry....not sure if it's your guy?

Anyhow, maybe this Guenther in my tree ties in with yours?

Cindy Winkler

pcwink at earthlink dot net
