Hi Rita,

Thanks for your reply. Since posting here, I've learned a lot of information. I'm still curious to know whether the Guidrys I knew (there are a few sets of them) descended from Jacques Guidry. Felix, Jacques' father, had a lot of children and then Jacques also had a lot of children, so it's quite likely that they tie in to this family. Which child of Felix is your ancestor?

Patricia

I have just joined this research of John A Guidry. My son just married John A Guidry great granddaughter, Amanda. This line comes thru John A Guidry's son Harold.
I've just spent 6 hours researching Father Hebert's books all 12 volumes. Father Hebert shows Alice Hebert b. 31 Jan 1883 in Chacahoula, La dies 1952 as the daughter of Amede Aladin Hebert & Rosalie Trahan. From Amede to his parents Etienne Valery Hebert & Louise Aimee "Alice" Dubois. Etienne's father is Jean Baptiste Hebert & Elizabeth Bourg
As for John A Guidry, I think his parents were Emile Guidry & Amelia Lambert. I have seen her name in the census as Melia. My sources are the census records & Father Heberts books. I would like to compare notes with anyone on this line. rubo1836

Hi,

I need to correct that Ophelia Richard Goodwin's other children were for a white man by the name of T. Thibodeaux, and not Theodule Richard. Ophelia was the daughter of a either black or mulatto woman named Salie Malveaux, and a white man named Eugene Richard. Ophelia Richard died in 1896 but Louis Goodwin was still alive at the time of her death, but have no info as to when Louis Goodwin died.

Sincerely,

HELLO,

MY GRANDFATHER WAS LOUIS GOODWIN, WHO WAS THE SON OF ALCEE/ALCIDE GOODWIN AND CLARISSE LEWIS OR JONES. THIS INFO IS ON HIS MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE IN 1910 FROM CHURCH POINT CHURCH. HE MARRIED CELESTINE COLAS.

ALCEE GOODWIN'S PARENTS ARE LOUIS GOODWIN & MARIE OPHELIA RICHARD. MARIE HAD 6 OTHER CHILDREN THAT I HAVE RESEARCHED OR HAVE BEEN CONTACTED BY OTHER RELATIVES ABOUT. SHE HAD CHILDREN BY A WHITE MAN NAMED THEODULE RICHARD. THOSE CHILDREN WERE MARY LOUISE, EVA, JOHN, ANATOLE, EDWARD, AND CHERRICK THIBODEAUX. THE ONLY ONE THAT I KNEW OF WAS MARY LOU THIBODEAUX WHO MARRIED OSCAR DEJEAN, OF WHOM WE REFERRED TO AS AUNT BLANCHE.

MARIE OPHELIA RICHARD HAD A SISTER BY THE NAME OF MARIE THERESIA RICHARD WHO MARRIED SEVERIN CASIMIR LEDET/LEDE. THEIR PARENTS WERE EUGENE RICHARD WHO WAS WHITE AND SALIE MALVEAU WHOMAY HAVE BEEN MULATTO.

MY FATHER, WHO IS MILTON GOODWIN, ALONG WITH MY BROTHER NILTON GOODWIN, SR. ATTENDED THE GOODWIN REUNION THAT WAS HELD SEVERAL YEARS AGO. I DON'T KNOW THE DATE, BUT IT HAS BEEN MORE THAN FIVE YEARS AGO. THEY LIVE IN CROWLEY, LA NOW BUT AS A CHILD MY FATHER LIVED IN MOWATA, LA.

WHILE LOOKING INTO THE GOODWIN BACKGROUND, I HAVE FOUND THAT BECAUSE OF EITHER NOT BEING ABLE TO READ OR OTHER REASONS SOME OF THE SPELLING OF GOODWIN HAS BEEN CHANGED TO GOODWILL, GOODMAN, OR GOODWARD. THERE ARE ACTUALLY THREE MARRIAGE LICENSE OF LOUIS&MARIE WITH THESE NAMES.

IN A 1860 LOUIS GOODWIN IS LISTED AS LIVING WITH HIS MOTHER WHO IS LISTED AS BETSY GOODWIN AND A BROTHER NAMED ISAM. ON HIS MARRIAGE LICENSE, HIS PARENTS ARE LISTED AS LOUIS&ELIZABETH GOODWIN. I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO FIND WHAT WAS ELIZABETH(BETSY) MAIDEN NAME. SHE PROBABLY WOULD HAVE BEEN BORNED AROUND THE LATE 1820 OR 1830.

SINCERELY

Does anyone Guedry Guedry from Texas? He was probably born in Klotzville, LA. My 70-90 yr old cousins were remembering him, and they were calling him Guedry Guedry who went to Texas, but they could NOT remember his relationship to us - Perhaps his parents or grandparents were Philogene and Anastacie braud Guedry.

This is what I have to date. I know you have some of this but it will help other researchers possibly find more.

1930 Census:

Name: John Guidry
Home in 1930: Police Jury Ward 8, Terrebonne, Louisiana
Age: 60
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1870
Birthplace: Louisiana
Relation to Head of House: Head
Spouse's Name: Alice
Race: White
Household Members: Name Age
John Guidry 60
Alice Guidry 47
Murphy Guidry 23
Harold Guidry 19
Alice Guidry 16
Madge Guidry 10
Mable Guidry

Source Citation: Year: 1930; Census Place: Police Jury Ward 8, Terrebonne, Louisiana; Roll: 823; Page: 21A; Enumeration District: 12; Image: 528.0.

http://content.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=View&r=an&dbi...

==========

1920 Census:

Name: John Guidy
Home in 1920: Gibson, Terrebonne, Louisiana
Age: 50 years
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1870
Birthplace: Louisiana
Relation to Head of House: Head
Spouse's Name: Alice
Father's Birth Place: Louisiana
Mother's Birth Place: Louisiana
Marital Status: Married
Race: White
Sex: Male
Home owned: Own
Able to read: Yes
Able to Write: Yes
Image: 468
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
John Guidy 50
Alice Guidy 38
John Guidy 17
Eunice Guidy 15
Murphy Guidy 13
Harold Guidy 8
Alice Guidy 6
Madge Guidy 6/12

Source Citation: Year: 1920;Census Place: Gibson, Terrebonne, Louisiana; Roll: T625_634; Page: 18B; Enumeration District: 99; Image: 468.

http://content.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=View&r=an&dbi...

==========

1910 Census:

Name: John A Guedry
[John A Guidry]
Age in 1910: 30
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1880
Birthplace: Louisiana
Relation to Head of House: Head
Father's Birth Place: Louisiana
Mother's Birth Place: Louisiana
Spouse's Name: Alice
Home in 1910: Police Jury Ward 8, Terrebonne, Louisiana
Marital Status: Married
Race: White
Gender: Male
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
John A Guedry 30
Alice Guedry 27
John Guedry Jr. 7
Eunice Guedry 5
Murphy Guedry 3
Alie Guedry 6/12

Source Citation: Year: 1910; Census Place: Police Jury Ward 8, Terrebonne, Louisiana; Roll: T624_529; Page: 18B; Enumeration District: 110; Image: 877.

http://content.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=View&r=an&dbi...

==========

This is what I've been searching. Census doesn't prove everything but maybe you can find some support information elsewhere. The fact that in 1870 census there is a son named Allen, I'd have to think he was born by 1870 and dates are wrong elsewhere, that does happen often. Where was John in 1900? He would be 30 and able to be out on his own. Was he a boarder somewhere? Was he living with extended family? By 1900 John and Alice marry, she coming from Terrbonne Parish to be married in Saint Helena?

We'll do more digging, but if you think this is a good lead let us know and maybe someone can connect to this family to shine more light on it for you.

Good Luck.
Happy Ancestor Hunting

Have you searched census working backwards? There is a connection between Alice and a Guedry in Assumption parish 1900. I've traced them from 1930 Terrebonne Parish (listed as John and Alice Guidry) back to 1880 (Guedry) which he was living with father. That would help with getting a generation back.

The first name Guedry from 1920 back wasn't Allen but close. If you have Allen Guedry's family, his kids names, we can see if this is the right line. It wouldn't be uncommon to have a first name given to us which isn't exactly as it would appear in previous years.

If you can list their children names we can see if this is a match.

Happy Ancestor Hunting

There are many siblings to Adolph. Are you sure this was the brother in law "Guidry" or was it one to his other sisters husband?

Further look at Fr. Heberts information has the parents as Louis Charlot and Apollina Richard.

In the 1900 census:

Name: Louis Charlot
Home in 1900: Police Jury Ward 2, Saint Landry, Louisiana
Age: 70
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1830
Birthplace: Louisiana
Relationship to head-of-house: Head
Race: Black
Occupation: View Image
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Louis Charlot 70
Appolena Richard 47
Armand Charlot 18
Rodolphe Charlot 13
Theodore Charlot 11
Aurore Charlot 8
Cleofina Charlot 6
Edrige Charlot 4
Jacques Charlot 1

For your records keep the sourch information:
Source Citation: Year: 1900; Census Place: Police Jury Ward 2, Saint Landry, Louisiana; Roll: T623 581; Page: 23A; Enumeration District: 54.

If you have access to ancestry:
http://content.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=View&r=an&dbi...

If you don't have access to census online, check with your local library for free access to Heritage Quest online.

Are you working back the lines of Charlot and Richard?

Good luck and happy ancestor hunting.

In using Fr. Heberts information I was able to gather a few names to search.

I believe Jacques and Adolphina had several children: Galbert, Paulina, Jacques, Onesime and others (these are the ones I found in reference in Fr. Heberts information).

Searching census can help you find all their kids and work down. Remember the names in census can be slightly off in spelling. Have to really use the imagination on some of them!

I could not find the 1900 census on them yet but in the 1910 this is the information that shows:

1910 Census:

Name: Jasque Guidy
[Jasque Guidry]
Age in 1910: 37
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1873
Birthplace: Louisiana
Relation to Head of House: Head
Father's Birth Place: Louisiana
Mother's Birth Place: Louisiana
Spouse's Name: Donphina
Home in 1910: Plaquemine Point, St Landry, Louisiana
Marital Status: Married
Race: Black
[Colored (Black)]
Gender: Male

Jasque Guidy 37
Donphina Guidy 31
Gilbert Guidy 15
Olena Guidy 13
Jasque Guidy Jr. 12
Alema Guidy 7
Leo Guidy 5
Elmire Guidy 4
Monroe Guidy 2
Orose Guidy 1

Keep the following for reference:
Source Citation: Year: 1910; Census Place: Plaquemine Point, St Landry, Louisiana; Roll: T624_530; Page: 7A; Enumeration District: 123; Image: 890.

If you have ancestry link:
http://content.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=View&r=an&dbi...

==========

In the 1920 census the following:

Name: Jack Guidry
Home in 1920: Police Jury Ward 6, St Landry, Louisiana
Age: 48 years
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1872
Birthplace: Louisiana
Relation to Head of House: Head
Spouse's Name: Dorzina
Father's Birth Place: Louisiana
Mother's Birth Place: Louisiana
Marital Status: Married
Race: Mulatto
Sex: Male
Home owned: Rent
Able to read: No
Able to Write: No
Image: 1050

Household Members: Name Age
Jack Guidry 48
Dorzina Guidry 46
Jack Guidry 22
Pauline Guidry 24
Celina Guidry 17
Leo Guidry 15
Elmire Guidry 13
Monroe Guidry 12
Rose Guidry 9
Elizabeth Guidry 7
Evalina Guidry 3

Keep the following for reference:

Source Citation: Year: 1920;Census Place: Police Jury Ward 6, St Landry, Louisiana; Roll: T625_630; Page: 3B; Enumeration District: 108; Image: 1050.

If you have ancestry:
http://content.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=View&r=an&dbi...

==========

I've not found them in the 1930 yet. Most the kids would be out on their own by this time. I think it would be good to check obits in newspapers to follow these names and also check online cemetery sites or if you are local visit in person. I can't guarantee the above is correct but with the information I have these would be my pick for the family. Further information in the 1930 on the male lines would give another generation to start searching.

Any other names you can come up with would help in this search, especially searching online newspapers for more current family.

You said you are searching descendants, are you not searching further back? I believe I've seen her parents in 1900 and also found his family I believe in 1880.

Good luck and happy ancestor hunting!

Thank you SOOO much. This is great information! I am actually related to the wife, Adolphina. Her brother, Adolphe, was my gggrandfather. Adolphe had an argument with and was murdered by his brother-in-law. His brother-in-law was a Guidry. So far, Jacques Guidry, is the only Guidry I've found that could be his brother-in-law. I know that the bro-in-law turned himself in, but I wondered if he served time. I also wondered what became of their family and whether any of the Guidrys I grew up with were my cousins. The murder was in 1909. It doesn't look like he did any time, unless it was between 1910 and 1920. Adolphe's wife and children relocated to Evangeline Parish. I guess the move and maybe any discord because of the argument/murder kept the families from knowing each other.

Thanks again for this great information! I'm going to update my family tree as soon as I send this reply!

I believe this was the one. So far I've found only two sisters that were married at the time of the argument/murder. They were Adolphina Guidry and Celestina Dalferez. The only other possible bro-in-law would be his wife's brother or his wife's sister's husband. So far I have been unable to find the wife's siblings. Her name was Eva THIBODEAUX. She was born in 1880 in Church Point. From their marriage certificate, I learned that her father was T. THIBODEAUX and her mother was Alexandrine JANSONNE.

I am trying to trace the CHARLOT and THIBODEAUX lines back. So far I've only traced back to Louis CHARLOT and Eva THIBODEAUX, with the exception of her parents' names on her marriage certificate. She was married 18 Jan 1894.

Thanks again for all of your help. I really appreciate it!

P.S. Is Eva's father being listed as an initial some sort of race code? I don't understand why his name was not spelled out.

The parents of Vorace, Edward, Antoine, Annie, Leonie, and Palmier Guidry were Simon Limas Guidry and Marcelite Garry. This information is on my WorldConnect Project File at www.rootsweb.com under the database of leecrockett.
Simon Limas Guidry was the first cousin of my great great grandfather, Savenia Sonnier, and his wife, Anunciad Sonnier, of Toomey, LA. Simon Limas Guidry was the son of Olivier Guidry and Eliza Sonnier.
Please feel free to contact me about our mutual Guidry and Sonnier families.
Paul,
I sent this information to William Thibodeaux but I thought it might help someone on this forum. I am a direct descendant of Pierre Guidry and Claire Babin. I have alot of information on this family in my WorldConnect Project file under the database leecrockett.

Onesime Louis Guidry who md. Modeste Potier was the son of Louis Guidry and Silesie Savoie. Louis Guidry was the son of Pierre Guidry and his second wife, Marguerite Miller. Alexis Onesime Guidry md. Julie Euphrasie Potier. She is not the same woman as Modeste Potier listed above. Alexis Onesime Guidry was the son of Louis David Guidry md. Marie Modeste Borda. Louis David Guidry was the son of Pierre Guidry md. Claire Babin. Too many same names for all these Guidry's confuses people who do not have access to the SWLA CD.

I believe the late marriage for Onesime Louis Guidry and Modeste Potier was for inheritance purposes. Modeste Potier was born c. 1825 and was not 90 when she died. She would have been too old to be the mother of Aspasie, Alexis, Louis, Felix and Ophelia if she had been born in 1800. All these children were born in the late 1850's.

1880 United States Federal Census
Home in 1880: 1st Ward, Saint Landry, Louisiana
Household Members: Name Age
Onezine Guidry 68 M (*W) M LA Farmer
Aspasie Guidry 39 F M LA Daughter
Ophelia Guidry 18 F M LA Daughter
Modeste Guidry 55 F M LA *Illegible on relationship but probable this is Modeste Potier.
Alcee Parodin 11 M M LA Grandson
Marie Modeste Gudry 11M F M LA Granddaughter
Louis Thiebordeau 22 M M LA Laborer

*On the actual census the race appears to be White not Mulatto for Onezime Louis Guidry. The rest of the family appears to be Mulatto. Louis, Felix, and Alexis Guidry are living next door to their parents in the 1880 census record.

Hi

Thanks I will share with several other researchers.

I am descendent of Pierre's brother Jean-Baptiste.

Pierre had an earlier wife. He married in Penn/Maryland & came to LA on the Jane/Genea. She appears to have died when they were across from Natchez. I need to check if they also had son that died about the same time as his mother & sister.

If you would like parts of Pierre's story contact me off list - Baye des Espanole (northern tip of Cape Breton), Return to old family home (Lunenburg NS), Penn/Maryland, Jane/Genea to LA, Natchez, to the LA Acadian Coast & finally settle above I-10 on Bayou Teche.

In 2009 we will be having a worldwide reunion in Northern New Brunswick & planning for LA in 2014. For info on that, the family websites & association contact me at:

pleblan@netscape.net

==============================
1.	Pierre Guedry[1,2] was born 14 Nov 1741 in Cobeguit, Acadia. He died 13 Nov 1825 in St Martinville, St Martin, LA.
Pierre married (1) Marguerite Dupuis Dupuy on 1764. Marguerite was born 1741. She died before 1769 in Probably, San Luis de Natchez, LA.
They had the following children:
2	F	i.	Marie Guedry was born 1764.
Appendix A - Sources

1. Arsenault, Bona, Histoire et Genealogie des Acadiens, v 6 p 2499-2502.
2.
Hello Paul:
Thanks for sending me the information you have on my ancestors. Ophelia Guidry and Louis Thibodeaux mentioned in your post are my paternal great-grand parents. Thier son, Alex Thibodeaux Sr. was my grandfather.
Regarding Ophelia's mother; In your opinion, are Modeste and Julie the same person? I know that in many historical records names seem to be very flexible. I have seen documents that state that Onesmime's father is Joseph Guidry born in 1722 at Fort Louis, Natchez, Ms. and that his wife was Scholastique Hebert daughter of Jean Charles Hebert. Your info. has him named as, David. The same document had Onesime's birth year as 1812. Could Modeste Bourda have been another wife? Or a concubine?
The people in the first paragraph seem to be my ancestors. I'd like to know more about them.
Does your information include any information on Louis Thibodeaux's mother? I have information that Louis Thibodeaux's father's wife was a Bihm but I have my doubts that she was Louis's mother. A point of interest is that my grandfather had sisters named Modeste and Ophelia, two brothers named Louis and a nephew named Felix. Given that it seems traditional to name children after their ancestors, it can't just be a coinsidence. There is also a known family connection with the Cheves line.
I really appreciate the fact that your responded to my request for information. My relatives know very little about our family.

Cousin Will

Hello Guidry Cousin:
After looking at your posts I feel that we share some common ancestors. I am descended from Onesime Guidry and Modeste Poitier. You referred to her a Julie. Their daugher, Marie Ophelia is my great grandmother. She married Louis Thibodeaux. Their son Alexis Thibodeaux is my grandfather. Do you have any information on Julie(Modeste) Poiter? I remember my relatives saying that my gradfather Alexis was named after an uncle. It all seems to fit, dosen't it.

William Thibodeaux, Lawtell, LA.

I found some information on my ancestor, Joseph David Guidry, who I had inquired about in my previous post.
Hello Guidry cousins,

I am sorry to not have replied sooner. Chasing three children has not let me much time for genealogy recently.

I have traced Julie Euphomoise Modeste Poitier's ancestry several generations. My information all seems to match what Paul has also posted so far as well.

It has been years since I researched this part of my tree. I really need to get access to Father Hebert's church records.

I am happy to share anything I have with you both. Thanks!

-Kristin

I am looking for information about my great grandfather who was John Allen Guidry(Guedry). He was born somewhere inbetween 1870 and 1880 in Louisiana. He later married Alice Hebert and he died in his 60's. Any attempts to go backwards for his parents or if he had brothers and sisters have failed. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much,I hope this leads to more information. I have been looking and been unable to find. I had not been able to get to the library to check the Father's Heberts books. I know in the early 1900's John A. purchased some land in gibson but that was the first I know of him. I don't have any older relatives on that side to ask, the last one of his children passed away in 2000.I had found a census with emile but I did not find anything else so I did not think it was right. My dad was the third generation of John Guidry(just different middle names), so I thought that might be a trend but was not sure. Thanks you so much I am so excited to have new information to work with. Thank you, Thank you. Can you tell I am excited!lol

Of the information I have it was listed as Guidry but I have found census with Guedry,so not sure. I know that some of the Guidry family came from around the New Iberia or Lafayette area, but in the early 1900's they purchased land in Gibson Louisiana and that is where they stayed until they passed. It is confusing with the census because the one for 1910 says he was born in 1880 and the 1930 census says 1870, so I don't know which one is right. I have a date of birth Jan.14 1870 and died jan. 1 1936 but I don't know if they are correct, and his wife was Alice Hebert 1883-1952. They had 10 children. My daddy was the 3rd generation of John Guidry(just had a different middle name each time), so I would tend to believe it goes back further. I still live in the same area as them, but there is no other relative that are researching their background that I know of. Any help is appreciated. Thank You.

Their children's names are; Anthonine Tony, Bobbie, John Stevens, Eunice, Murphy, Aline, Harold, Alice, Madge, and Mable.Sorry it took so long to answer. In the 1910 census it says he was born in 1880 and in the 1930 cenus it says he was born in 1870. Confusing. Thanks.

Ignace Guidry, Died 1/19/1925. Lawell, LA

The death last night of Ignace Guidry, shot Monday night by his brother in law, A. Landry, near Lawtell in the south eastern part of St. Landry parish, has given the basis for a serious charge against Landry, now held in St. Landry parish jail.

According to reports of the shooting received by the Signal, Guidry was shot by Landry at the home of the latter after a quarrel between the two men, which is said to have ensued when Guidry came to Landry’s home to get his wife, who had gone there Saturday night. The report said that Mrs. Guidry had gone Sunday evening to the home of Amos Reed to visit some sick people. Later she went to the home of her brother where she remained until Monday night, at which time her husband came to get her in a car. Her brother is said to have told Guidry that his wife was to spend the night, and it is said that an argument followed, leading to the shooting.

It was said that the quarrel between the men leading to the shooting was due to Landry’s complaint that Guidry had been abusing his wife, according to the sheriff’s office in Opelousas.

Guidry died at the St. Landry sanitarium at 10 p.m., last night after lingering since Monday. He was rushed immediately after the shooting to Opelousas where medical attention was given. Meanwhile Landry, also taken to Opelousas was jailed and has since been held pending developments at the sanitarium.

The remains of the deceased were brought to the home of his sister, Miss Blanche Guidry, in Church Point this morning, according to advices received from that town, and funeral services were to be held from the Catholic Church at 2 p.m. this afternoon.

He is survived by his wife, and ten children, of which seven are from a previous marriage, his first wife having died several years ago. In addition he is mourned by three brothers, Charles and Jack of Ged, La., and Ben of Goose Creek, and three sisters, Mrs. E.L. Melancon and Mrs. Stephen Thibodeaux of Church Point and Mrs. Roland Davis of Vinton.

Crowley Signal, January 20, 1925
