My family is trying to trace the ancestors of Stephen Joseph Gilbert (American name); Etienne Guilbert (possible French name). He left Calais, France at the age of 18 and came to America. He settled in Kansas first then Oklahoma. He was born around 1880 and had 6-9 brothers and sisters.

He married Mary Darras.

Janet:

No, not related. The Guilberts married into my wife's line in Fife in the late 1800s. But we are in touch with two living descendants of the Dundee Guilberts.

Also, we have the line back to John Guilbert in Guernsey in the early 1800s.

If you would like more information, email us on brianjamieson@compuserve.com

Brian & Carol

Brian,
Are you related to Alexander? Since we posted this query, we have verified that this is the same Alexander Guilbert that you found. He came to California in 1903, bringing his wife Elizabeth Sharp and infant daughter in 1904. He was my late husband's great-grandfather. i have some information on various other members of the family as well. Thanks. Janet

How about Alexander Edward Guilbert, b Dundee Scotland in 1879? He was in Dundee in 1901, unmarried. Don't know what happened after that.

I have his parents and grandparents. His Father Joseph and Grandfather, John Guilbert were from Guernsey, Channel Islands.

Brian

I am also searching for a Francois Guilbert, but he would have been born approx 1855, either in French Canada, or France. His son, John P. Gilbert was born Feb 2, 1887 in Laconia, NH.

My mother's aunt said that the family name was Guilbert originally, and the name was changed to Gilbert. We do not know what generation it changed though. Waiting to get birth record from New Hampshire for John P. Gilbert to see how it was recorded and see how parents were listed on that. Do not know mother's name, first or maiden........just know that she died after John's birth in 1887, and before 1920 census where father Frances was listed as widowed and living with his son John and his wife in Westchester, NY.

Have you had any luck tracking down any information on your Francois? There is always a possibility that he could be the father of the Francois I am looking for.

Hope you are still reading message boards and reply.
THanks!

I was notified about some old letters from late 1800's and bought them hoping the might be from my family line. They weren't, so I am hoping to find the family that these letters belong with. One of the letters is Albert writing to his son and fussing at him for not writing enough. I know they are not my direct line, but I couldn't just let them go and be tossed or something. If you need more info or know someone who might be able to help me find a family member that is interested please post a reply! Thank You, Shari (Gilbert) Wilson

Try going to ellis island. com and type in guillbee and see that:
that name has so many variations, see that the only guilbe
listed entered the united states in 1918 or there about and that
it was a 23 year old single female named Paula Guilbe, from San Juan and no ethnesticity is annotated. I suggest you try TARTABOU ALSO .see that name and the variations.this site is definately helpful as well, it's interesting to see the variations of the names and the possabilities that they reveal, such as where they originate, as well as the fact that the origin of the people, shows them as crew members and the ports of call the originate from......good searching.....

Please try typing the name guilbe into the keyword or search factor of your computer. The search must be simple and singular and there you will find a census list for el barrio CAPITANEJO 1910 ...with a list containing Guilbe family and the children and thier positions in the community..also annotates one of the first recorded documents showing the existance of the family in that part of the Island..Type in Guilbe, Francisco or any other familiar name, from the past or the present..something will come up since more than likely that is a common link to the Puerto Rican...children carrying
the family names...a very common and cultural practice..so the more curious you become the more links and information become available in your search.

My grandfather was Jaime Guilbert Casanoba, whom married Juana Rodriguez Miranda, my grandmother, in 1900. Out of this marriage there were a number of children.
Miguel, Mercedes, Adolfo (my father) Lydia, Panchi, Judith,
Dominga, Ana, Cuca, Jose Miguel and Gilberto.
