I'm pretty sure we're on the right track as well - in fact, I never really questioned it. It's unfortunate that the census of the years when Zilpha was young, didn't include the names of wives and children. That would have helped a lot!

I'm pretty sure we are on the right track here. The gravestone inscription makes it clear that Zilpha was Oliver Guild's wife and that her mother's name was Jerusha. I located another message board posting that puts Nathan Morgan and Jerusha Benton married in Preston, Ct., with children that include a Zilpha. Nathan and Jerusha lived possible in Vermont before moving to New York. This is a good possibility of being the right family. Probably would have to trace him through land records, of which very few are online and requires visiting the various counties.

Yep, that's what I'm saying. Burleigh didn't get all things right, and neither will I. Really, it's not such a stretch from Sylva to Zilpha - often spellings were taken merely on the sound of the name. I don't know where Burleigh got his info, but could have been a relative with an accent, poor spelling, who knows? No, no evidence but Burleigh's workand yes, it is possible Burleigh got the name of the state wrong - he too had to rely on family members for information. Records at that time weren't as open as they are now, and much harder to find. I'll go with what I have until someone finds me proof of anything different.

Hello all,

I am descended from Charles Adrean Guild and Mollie Elizabeth Schaffer through Benjamin Harrison Guild. Just to clarify, Charles(born 29 December 1861 in Morgan, GA, died 28 June 1901 in Yell, IA, married 22 December 1880 in Athens, TN) was the son of Dr. Lewis Adrean Guild(born 28 February 1825 in Franklin, MA, and died 14 June 1888 in Atlanta, GA) and Frulilla (sometimes spelled Frutilla) F. Stubbs. Mollie (born 15 March 1858 in Greenville, VA, died 14 February 1907 in Yell, IA) was the daughter of Jacob Schaffer(born 10 June 1808 in Frankfort, Germany, died 7 June 1899 in Dalton, GA, married in Baltimore, MA) and Elizabeth Raindhill(30 May 1827 in Frankfort, Germany, died 21 August 1869 in Huntsville, AL), who emigrated from Germany. I have several articles regarding the murder, court case, death records, land records, census records, photos, naturalization papers, and facts. Please let me know what questions you have or if there are any documents you would like to exchange. If I did not include dates or places it was because I did not have it. I have primary sources(vital records) for about half of my dates, and the rest was provided by Burleigh. Please let me know if you would like copies.

Sincerely,

Jeremiah Guild

Hi Margaret,

So you are saying that Zilpha Guild buried in Chautauqua County is the wife of Oliver Guild of Bridgewater, Oneida County (No. 262 in Burleigh's book). Burleigh has her name as Sylva Morgan, which is the name I have been searching for for years. If in fact Zilpha and Sylva are the same person, it is very likely Granice is wrong. Granice is a name I have never seen anywhere else and one of Oliver's daughters is named Jerusha. So it is very possible Jerusha is right and Granice is wrong.

Do you have any evidence besides Burleigh's book? I would like to find some collaborating evidence. But if in fact Zilpha and Sylva are the same person, it solves a long-standing mystery in my direct family line.

There is also a Rutland in Massachusetts, a small town northwest of Worchester. It is possible Burleigh got the state wrong. It wouldn't be his first error. Seeing how many folks in the area of West Winfield, N.Y. came from Massachusetts, this might be a better fit for the Morgan family.

Steve

Hi Steve - I have not been able to find Zilpha in either 1850 or 1860 census myself. However, Burleigh seemed to be very sure of her birthdate, but has her parents listed as Nathan Morgan and wife Granice - possible Nathan was married twice.

There is a Lillah Guild in both 1850 and 1860 census both in Vermont. 1850 shows her with a female named "Juda" which could have been a nickname for daugher Jerusha, and in 1860 she appears with a Julia Guild, age 66. Not sure who this Julia would be.

I have found two records, one on Find-A-Grave and the other at the Chautauqua County GenWeb site, that show a Zilpha
Guild, daughter of Nathan & Jerusha Morgan & wife of Oliver Guild, buried in Dewittville Cemetery. One record states she died 5-27-1867 at age 88-9-27. The other record states she was born July 13, 1773 and died May 27, 1867. Both can't be right because the birth year and age do not jive with the death date.

I am trying to fit Zilpha into the Guild family with her husband Oliver. Does anyone know who she is? I can't find her in the 1860 federal census.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Steve Lay
Hackettstown, NJ
Hello Linda - I've just spent hours going through various census and have had no luck finding this man! I agree there has to be a connection, but I have no idea where. Zibba Branch Guild had two children, one daughter and a son who was born 1860, died 1881 - no issue. Francis Goodrich had a half brother by father's second marriage, name Henry Melvin Guild, but I have not been able to locate him in NY, PA or CA - in fact the only census listing I have for him is 1900 US Federal Census...Erie, Erie, PA Soldier's & Sailors Home, inmate - soundex census card G430 Film Roll T1068-192 - he is listed as widower - but no children mentioned. Can't even find an obit for either he or Albert Z Guild. I will keep on looking. Please contact me at gamgend@yahoo.ca - I have wife of Frank AShley Guild, but no dates or locations for her nor her parents. Believe her name is Betty Murrill Hogan. I will keep looking for Albert Z. Guild. Gut tells me there is a connection there somewhere.

Hi there - Galen Guild was the son of Richard Guild and Zillah Turner, Richard descendant of John Guild of Dedham, MA - b. circa 1609 Ilketshall, St. Margaret Parish, Suffolk, England. John's parent's were Richard Guild(Gyle) and Margery Jordan. Richard's father was Richard (Gyle) chr. 1650 in Suffolk, Eng and his parents were Will (Gyle) and Rose Flatman, married 1542 in Ilketshall, St. Margaret, Suffolk. This info from Boyd's Directory of Suffolk Co. Marriages. Galen did marry Elizabeth ( Betsy) Sickles on 27 June, 1824 in Danube, Herkimer, NY. I can provide considerably more info on this line if you are interested.

My email is now gamgend@yahoo.ca Please contact me.
Are you a descendant of Galen and Elizabeth?

Hi Therese

I'm sorry to be so late in answering - don't usually get on the computer over weekends or when with grandkids:<))

First, let me clarify one very inportant point - regardless of what you may have heard, the Guilds were not of Scottish descent - they were of English origin.

I have all the data you could want on the background of Charles Adrian Guild - thanks to help from other family members, census returns, etc.

Charles and son Clarence were murdered over a land dispute. I do have articles that cover the trial of the Bricker brothers who were the killers in question. The murders were well documented and I will see if I can find the articles - probably buried now in a file I can't off-my-head, locate. But I will!

Please contact me at gamgend@yahoo.ca for further info - there's too much to put in here!

I will need more data from you to update the family of Eugene and his wife ( still listed as Unknown) and their sons, Mark and Dennis - plus any other siblings and spouses/children.

BTW - you and I are 9th cousins once removed.

Looking forward to hearing back from you,

warm regards
Marg Lambert
Do you by any chance have any information on the parents of her husband, William?
Lester, I believe is Galen and Elizabeth's (Betsey Sickles)grandson. I haven't discovered yet who sired Lester. Galen did indeed die in Oshkosh. He followed his daughter, Emily Catherine first to Oshkosh where she and her husband John Barr resided. You'll find them first in the 1860 Oshkosh census. (Ward 3, pg 94-95) Then again in the 1870 Oshkosh census, Ward 3, page 16. Shortly after the 1870 census, Emily, John, and their children up and moved to Nebraska. You'll find them residing in Douglas, Douglas Co., NE, ED 242 in the 1880 census there. Galen however disappears after the 1870 census, and is presumed dead. I have found his burial in Riverside Cemetery (Block 18, Lot 18) in Oshkosh, but no burial information was recorded. Other researchers have tried to find more on his death and burial, but as far as I know, nothing has been found thus far. Hopefully you'll be able to push this forward and pass it on. Unfortunately, not everyone shares what they find, and that's contributed to our lack of steady progress on this line.
I have a lot of information on Galen and his children, grandchildren, etc. I spent some time in Omaha, so was able to really dig in and fill-in that branch.
I have Richard Gyle b. 1576 in England as John's (b. 1616)father.
Take care,
~Michelle

Thanks for your reply. Do you know if John's father was John Guild from Scotland or Richard Guile from England? Also I found Lester Guild living with "Elithabeth" (46) and Winfield (18) in the 1860 census, but no Galen and I have seen some of your other posts that Galen was in Oshkosh. Strange. I don't know if this is relevant but I found a record that a Galen Guild married a Betsey Sickles on "Sunday the 27th" that was in the Gospel Inquirer, Little Falls, 3 Jul 1824. So I believe the date is 27 June 1824.

Who was Albert Zibbi Guild in California around 1900?

While researching the family of Francis Goodrich Guild in Northern California, I found several appearances of an Albert Guild that seems to be connected to the family of Francis Guild, but I can't figure out the connection.

Two of F.G Guild's sons (Charles James and Frederick Branch Guild) are listed in the Nevada County California Directory 1895 in Nevada City. There is also an Albert Zibbi Guild listed with the occupation of miner.

There is an Albert Z. Guild in the 1894-1896 Oakland City Directory living at the same address as F.G. Guild's wife and several of their adult children. Albert is listed as a music teacher.

In 1897-1900 Oakland City Directory at the same address as before, he is listed as Albert C. Guild, miner.

He doesn't show up in any census schedule in California so I don't have an age range or any other information on him. I know that Francis G. Guild had a brother named Ziba Branch Guild who was a physician in New York, and wondered if Albert Zibbi Guild might be a nephew of Francis, or possibly a son that was born after the 1880 census.

Incidentally, I am not a Guild descendant; I am researching for my aunt, who was married to Frank Ashley Guild, grandson of Francis Guild through his son Berton Ashley Guild.

Linda in California
Thanks for looking through your records for him. Given that he lives with them in 1895-97, he has to have some connection. You may already know this, but Francis Goodrich wife was Harriet Van Bergen, not "Vanbugar" as listed in Burleigh's book and posted on all the Ancestry family trees. They married December 30, 1850 in Dane Co. Wisconsin.

I will contact you directly on my Aunt, as she is still living.

Hello Margaret,
I am a G G grandaughter of Nettie Edna Guild. She is a daughter of Charles Adrian Guild and Mollie E Schaeffer.

Your postings are such exciting info for me. My grandpa Eugene Wood (son of Nettie) had told me that his grandpa Guild was murdered over a land or water dispute. Grandpa also told me that the Guild family owned most of Webster County Iowa. I have been surching high and low for this info. You'd think a murder would have been documented.

I found a cousin recently. He has a quilt, that was passed down from Nettie and the Guild side. This quilt is a log cabin design. Probably made around the 1850's. My cousin said he was told it was made by a scotish aunt on the Guild side. I have pictures. The quilt was displayed on the Master Bed when company was over.

I have some pictures of Nettie. I would love to get a hold of copies of any other people on the Guild side for my family tree project. I would love to share the pictures I have with you.

So, you must be one of my cousins. Glad to meet you.

Please contact me if you like to share information.
Therese Wood-Siler

Hello Keith,
I am a G G grandaughter of Nettie Edna Guild. She is the daughter of Charles Adrian Guild and Mollie E Schaeffer.
My grandfather is Eugene Wood. Nettie married William Albert Wood in Lehigh, Iowa in 1904.
You said that Mollie was Charles 2nd wife, that explains the records that I found with Mary E as wife.

I have been in contact with a cousin that has a quilt. this quilt is said to be made sometime around 1850's by a Scotish aunt, on Charles A Guild side. The quilt was passed down by Nettie to one of her daughters and then to my cousin. It is remebered that the Guilds were of scotish decadence.
I wounder if Myrtle Rose would remember this quilt. Or if her mother Mollie (Netties sister) (my gg aunt) had told Myrtle about it. I was told that the quilt was displayed out on the master bed when company was to come over.

Maybe you could ask her, if you know her?

I am excited to find this information. I am happy to talk with a cousin. You are the first cousin on the Guild side that I have found.

My grandfather had told me that his grandfather Charles A Guild had been murdered over a land or water dispute. Also that the Guild family owned most of Webster county Iowa.So I have been surching for info on that. I finally found something between you and Margaret Guild Lambert. I will be contacting her as well.

My other gg grandfather was Andrew J Wood, my grandpa said he was a land surveyor. I am guessing that My g grandparents met because Nettie's dad was a land owner and My g grandpa William Albert Wood(Andrew J Wood) dad was a land ssurveyor. Also my grandpa said that Andrew J wood was shot by a Indian who later appologized for shooting him. The Indian thought he was someone else.

Please contact me if you like to share information.
Therese Wood-Siler

Better late than never. Terry is correct. Grampa died in 1963 in Rochester, NH and is buried in the Taylor family plot in Salisbury Mass. The Taylor/Oakes/Dow families lived in the Salisbury area for a number of generations and there are a number of family graves there. I don't believe I have his birth certificate but I may have his naturalization papers when he became a citizen. My grandmother (Eva Mertis Taylor Guild) had to sign a loyalty oath when they married because he was not a citizen and we were at war at the time (1912). As an aside, Meston James Guild was still in Denny, Stirlingshire in 1903 based on a citation and medal presented to him by the Royal Humane Society for saving one A. Brodie from drowning. (Search: Royal Humane Society Bronze Medal recipients 1903.) I recall visting Virgina in the 60's with my father (Fred W. Guild) and my Grandmother and meeting Iris, Peggy & Mary Paige, and a number of others. I don't recall meeting Roy and Stanley, could they have passed on by then? Neversmoon@comcast.net

Hi my father is Robert Charles Chamberlain Guild, his father was purported to be John Stirling Guild who was "married" to Eveline Chamberlain, however I cannot find the date of marriage or existence of same and just before my father left England for Australia in 1974 he tried to find him, however was told by his "wife" he had passed away
I would like to find a link somewhere and believe my father may have had half brothers or sisters. I believe John lived in Stirling. My father was born Northumberland near Blyth.

Re: Guild - Linn - Campbell - Ogilvy - Barry of Forfar~Angus, Scotland

Hello there. Good question. I don't know yet, I've not run across the maiden name. I've only focused on the direct paternal side and am planning to review census info in the very near future in order to fill in the siblings and their branches. I've seen these names on the boards over the past year and the timeline and location certainly fits. I'll let you know what I find. This certainly gives me some addtional names to confirm. Thanks!

Bob G.

Guild - Linn - Campbell - Ogilvy - Barry of Forfar~Angus, Scotland

I'm researching my Dad's (Douglas George Guild b. 12/20/1920 Merrit, BC Canada) line back in the Forfar/Angus region of Scotland. Family 'myth' had us from Dundee, but records show Forfar. I've recently found some great information on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. Here's what I have beginning with my grandfather, Herbert Allan Ward Guild:

Herbert Allan Ward Guild b. 9/28/1883 (we had thought his birth year was 1888) Forfar, Scotland; d. 1/30/1948 Vancouver, BC Canada; Brother William Shand b. 8/17/1888 and Sister Mabel Campbell b. 2/18/1892. Herbert traveled to Canada on (Ithink) March 30, 1907 on the steamer Sicilian of the Allan Line Mail Steamers, departing Glasgow arriving Halifax. May have gone to Moosejaw, but I know he settled in Kamloops BC where he married Lydia Lindberg of Sweden, 12/20/1915. Three daughters born in Kamloops, Jean and twins Viola and Vera. Dad was born in Merrit before the family moved to Vancouver (date unknown). Douglas moved to Bellingham WA just after the Ssecond World War and later moved to Seattle where our family has been since the early 50's.

Herbert son of James Guild and Jane Ann (Linn) Guild, James & Jane Ann married 9/14/1882 in District of St. Vigeans. James residence posted as London; Jane Ann as District of St. Vigeans, County of Forfar.

James Guild son of William Guild d. 8/13/1871 and Mary Ann (Ogilvy) Guild d. 8/8/1887.

Jane Ann (Linn) Guild daughter of John Linn and Elizabeth (Campbell) Guild.

William Guild son of Abram (or Abraham?) Guild d. 6/17/1868 age 70 and Janet (Barry) Guild d. 1867 age 60. Abram & Janet married 10/28/1827 I think in Forfar.

Mary Ann (Ogilvy) Guild daughter of Peter & Mary Ogilvy. No further information at this time.

If this looks familiar to anyone, please post. Thank you.

Correction Re: Guild - Webster, not Linn - Campbell - Ogilvy - Barry of Forfar~Angus, Scotland

This is an update to my original post. Thanks to all who added to and/or confirmed information, especially Barbara of Melbourne and Goldie in Kamloops.

It appears the Herbert Allan Ward Guild I've been following is actually an older cousin of my grandfather of the same name, therefore a great uncle to me. The information is correct concerning Great Uncle Herbert, born 28 Sept 1883 to James Guild and Jane Ann (Linn) Guild, but my grandfather Herbert was born 6 Mar 1888 to Alexander Guild and Joanna/Johana Yeaman Webster Guild m 20 Dec 1869.

Joanna/Johana b 15 Jan 1850, died three weeks after Herbert's birth and husband Alexander followed 25 Apr 1889. From census records of 1891 and 1901, Herbert was living with older siblings prior to coming to Canada in 1907.

I'm interested in any information about Herbert, and/or then-surviving siblings Mary Ann Campbell b 10 Nov 1871, Alexander b 30 Jul 1873, Norman Craik b 14 Dec 1876, James b 1879, Isabella b 1880, Jeannie b 6 Aug 1882 and David George b 8 Jun 1884. Two siblings died as infants, Jessie Webster d 27 Nov 1873, and Harry Clifton d 28 Feb 1875.

Thanks again for all the information thus far, this has been a great ride so far. bob g.
