Does anyone have any information on Thomas Guinan who settled in Northeastern Ohio -- Salem/ Youngstown area. We believe he came over from Ireland about 1862, possibly County Tipperary. We actually still have his naturalization certificate, that appears to be dated 1867. Somehow the name was changed to Gainan. He had four daughters and a son -- Frank Gainan of Youngstown was my grandfather -- probably born around 1880. He was in the furnace business, and also lived in Boston (Waltham) for about 7 years in the 1920s, where my uncle Phil Gainan was born in 1926. The family moved back to Youngstown where the rest of the family lived.
I am having trouble in my ancestry search -- I can't find any links to where Thomas Guinan was born and who were his relatives. He probably had brothers and sisters who came to the U.S. but I don't know whether they came together or separately. I have found other ancestors through the Ellis Island Web site, but EI didn't open until 1886. I have found some ship records, but none from 1860 - 1865, and they did not always have accurate passenger lists.
I've done internet seraches on "Guinan" and "Gainan" -- a lot of hits on the Woopi Goldberg Star Trek Character "Guinan" and of course on Texas Guinan. I once visited Cripple Creek Colorado where Texas Guinan is quite a celebrity -- she entertained there before going to her famous New York Night Club. Maybe a common ancestor back in Ireland. I also discovered that there are other Gainans in Billings, MT and Corpus Christi Texas.
Would any of you fellow Guinans have any suggestions for other areas to search for the missing link back to Ireland?
