Does anyone have info on William M Hale born 1834-1844 in Russell County, Virginia and Eliza Jane Gullett born about May 1862 in Kentucky. William and Eliza appear to have been married about 1900 in Magoffin County, Kentucky according to the FamilySearch.org web site.

I need info on William and Eliza's parents, siblings, and children. Thanks for any help.

I am new to researching the Sanson/Gullett family line and found your post. Laura Gullett was my great-grandmother and Lewis Sanson my Great-grandfather. They had 10 children, Lucille, Charley, Willard, June, Mary, Madge, Buster, Beatrice, Lola (my grandmother) and Billy. Is this who you are asking about.

I am doing some research on this name and one I am looking for is a John Newton Gullett or his son Clifford Lee Gullett. The latter spent several years in England and is thought tp have died in Portsmouth OHIO. Father John Newton Gullett possibly in Scioto county OH. Do these names ring a bell with anyone

After taking a look at Union Co. Map and the WW1 Draft Card again his addess is Hickory Flat MS and he was born in Connersville MS.

My name is Jim Gullett. I was born in Portsmouth, Ohio. At the current time, I live in Portland, Oregon. I am curious about the history, name, and origin of the family. I was once told it was a Scotch-Irish name and that the first clans settled into North Carolina. After moving to the west coast, people with the name pronounced it as "Goo-Lay" and I read that Gulletts had first settled in the northeast then migrated west. These Gulletts were said to be French. There is no Gullett family coat of arms. Any you buy off the internet is one that they maded up.

To find out more about your ancestors I would need to know your grandparents and greatgrandparents names. Some one who was born before the 1930 Census. The 1940 census will not be available until 2010.

I found your parents marriage Ronald J. Gullett b. abt 1944 married Cherryel E. Nay b. abt 1944 m. 14 Nov 1965 Los Angles CA.

With his SSN no. and death date you can go to the SS Administration and get a print out or a copy of his original application for a Social Security Number this form will have his parents names and where they were born and well as where he was born.

I did not find a death certificate but that should also have his parents names. If they were born before 1930 I should be able to trace them.

I have posted George Thomas Gullett's details on a new thread under his name. Looks like the place you need to visit is Carroll Co. TN where George's father and mother are buried not Lauderdale Co, you may well find some things on Nancy Elizabeth in Lauderdale Co. You also need to visit the Carroll Co. courthouse to see what data they have on the Gulletts. Check for wills, settlements and inventories of estates, land transfers, etc.

The reason that Ripley is mention is George Thomas Gullett practiced in Durhamville, Lauderdale Co. TN. Ripley is in the same county this does not mean that George Thomas was born in Lauderdale County or the he descends from Waitman Gullett. I intend to start a new thread and post the ancestors of George Thomas Gullett. I have not found all his census data but will post what I have.

While I am on this thread I would like to lay to rest the old tale that somehow a Lord Waitman Gullett of France m. Eloise DeRochers and had George or George Samuel b. ca 1750 to 1784 LaBelle France. Thore are no sources for any of this "genealogy without sources is not genealogy but fairytales". Some one made this up and submitted it to the LDS and it has spread from there. I would be happy to see the sources that supposedly exist for this family. All of this Gullett/DeRoshers family is from AL and FL, not TN.

The orgin of the Waitman as a given name comes from Mary Goslin's father Waitman Goslin. Mary b. ca 1735 d. before 1796. She m. George Gullett b. ca 1735 Somerset Co. MD d. 1796 Gilford Co. NC his will named Waitman as a minor son, he had to have been at least 14 inorder to name his own guardian. As far as I can determine this was the first Waitman Gullett the son of George Gullett and Mary Goslin and is the same one who was on the 1830 Bedford Co. TN census and moved to Pope Co. IL by 1837.

Luke is probably a child of Waitman Gullett and Elizabeth Reeves/Reaves. In 1860 Luke and family are living with a George Reeves in Obrion Co. TN Waitman E. Gullett moved from TN to Pope Co. IL late 1830s Waitman was on the 1830 Bedford Co. TN and by 1840 had moved to Pope Co. IL

I would trace the Reeves/Reaves line to try and make the connection, None of Waitman's sons was old enough to be the father of Luke. On the 1840 Waitman has 3 son listed of 10 to 15 years old, 1 15 to 20 and 1 30 to 30, so these three were born before 1830. Waitman d. 26 Jan 1846 Pope Co. IL. In 1830 he had 3 under 5, 1 5 to 10 and 10 to 15. If Luke's age on the 1850 is correct then he is the one between 5 to 10 on the 1830 and 15 to 20 on the 1840. I have seen no will for Waitman naming his children and the family trees I have seen naming his children don't match the cenus data.
This Waitman was the son of George Gullett of Gilford Co. NC and Kent Co. DE. He is named in George's will 1796 Gilford Co. NC. Waitman was born ca 1780 Kent Co. DE.

You gave your GGgrandfather as George Thomas, when was he born. Who was your Grandfather and when and where was he born and live? This will make it easier to trace them. Do you know their wives maiden names?

William Gullett came to Somerset Co. MD in 1671 m. Susannah Mills 1674 five children are recorded in church records but there may have been others not in church records.

Others have said there were two other sons John and George. John being the one in Cecil Co. MD by 1704 I have no proof of that.

William b. ca 1648/53?
Susannah ca 1653/56?assuming she was between 18-21 when married.

William d. ca 1687 according to some. Susannah ca 1714/17

Most of the early Gulletts I have found are listed in Devon England. I have posted 2 page of them as Gulletts Born Before 1700 England on this site. The earlist I found was named Robti Gullett b. before 1583. William does not match any of those on these lists.

Gullatt is a variant of the Gullett surname. I descend from John and Sarah (Last Name Ukn) Gullett of Cecil Co. MD John b. ca 1685 m. ca 1709. Earlist record of John is a 1704 court document suing for his freedom from and indenture he had completed. Spelling was changed in settlment of his his son John Gullett/Gullatt's estate 1753-1755 by court clerk.

All the early Gulletts in America had English given names so it is thought that they came from France to England ca 1540 to 1575 giving enough generations for the change from French to English given names. They likely were French Huguenots (followers of John Calvin) who fled France, the Huguenots were servely persecuted after about 1540 with thousand slain on St. Bartholemew's day 1552.

It may also be that some fled to Scotland or Ireland or the Netherlands, Germany or the Swiss Cantons with different spellings of the surname according to which country they fled to. No one knows for sure it is all guess work.

Susannah Mills was an indentured servant to David Browne and came on the same ship as he. He was called a Scots rogue so she may also be of Scots descent.

You can go to Maryland Archives and read many early court documents on William and Susannah. Seach for the names gullett, gullet, gulick, gulnick.

It was mostly the Gilletts who came to New England.

Just read your post on Waitman Gullett and you said they were from around Ridgely, Tn. This is where my mothers family is from and have been searching for family a long time.We cant seem to get past my great grandfather his name was Luke H. Gullett, do you have anyone with this name in your files. We have been trying to find who Lukes daddy was. There at Ridgely they had a flood and a fire years back and most records were lost and We cant even find death records of him or my grand father, even though Ive been to the grave of my grandparrents.Will be waitting for your repley. Would you please send me info on Waitman. About all the info I have is a name and would like to start connecting some dots and fill in some spaces of our family tree. About all I know is that he came from France app 1790 and settled near Ripley or Ridgely, Tenn. My GGgrandfather is George Thomas, not sure how far down the line or whose son he is.

Thanks for your reply. Please see my other post. Ridgely is mentioned in alot of the old correspondence I have. There is not a Luke mentioned. However, I remember ( don't remember who, I think it was my Aunt Vida Fry) mentioning that either old or young Waitman named their children after the 12 apostles. The names I have listed are: James,(son of George and sons Jacob, Peter, John & Isaac. Georges brothers are Thompson, Gus, Frank and Joe. George supposedly lived in North Alabama. John lived in Humboldt.
Joe had a sister (15 in 1910) that was raised by a family named Wyatt near Ridgely. George (brother to young Waitman)moved to Florida.

The W.E. Gullett I mentioned had the entire family tree but he kept the info in his dad's library. I'm not sure who his dad is. Also, there is mention of Joe's half sister named Pritchette

Okay, that's all I know. Confusing us, but someone should be able to start connecting with some of these names.

My gggrandfather is George Thomas. Born: 1836 Ripley,TN(?)
Enlisted in CSA Army 1861 @ 21, 4th Tenn Vol, Served Shiloah, Corinth and captured @ Missionary Ridge 1863. After war attended Vanderbilt U and graduated with medical degree. Moved to Atkins, AR 1876 and married Lizzie Borum, he died in 1911. One son, Marvin born in 1876, died in 1911

Somewhere in my 1910 notes is a Mrs S.B. Johns (Ripley) who appears to be a cousin. Daughter of James Gullett. Her grandfather is George (?) Notes/letter was written by W.E. Gullett who worked for the Hirsch Lumber Co of Jacksonville, Florida. WE was 51 in 1910, had 5 children (2 boys/3 girls). He talks about a family reunion at the Chicamouga battlefield site on the land of Mrs Thadford and is the daughter of old Waitman. Mrs. T's daughter name is Mrs. Parks and her son lived in Ringgols, GA

One important note I have about old Waitman is that he was a French nobleman, rebelled and fought against Napolean 1. Lost his uprising and was bannished. Migrated to New Orleans and then to Tenn/GA

I'm trying to locate Lucinda Gullett. Maiden name unknown.
App birth 1843, Tennessee? She appears on the 1870 census in the Woodville PO, Haywood Cty, TN. She's 27. Her husband is Dr. George T. Gullett of Carroll Cty. She only lived 7 years into the marriage. Not sure who the other people are living in the household (Vine Neigts-18 and Ada Rayne-8). Cannot locate either marriage or death cert or grave location. GT remarried in 1874, Nancy E. Borum
