Debbi, I have Sarah Ann Gullion born 18 Dec 1846 in Montgomery Co. Virginia. She married Wesley Silas Crawford about 1865. Wesley is the son of George Crawford and Susan ???. Wesley born about 1845. I only have two children for them listed in my research. John Crawford b. about 1868, and Silas Henry Crawford born about 1870. By the 1870 census they were living in Mercerville, Gallia Co. Ohio. I'm sure there were more children, but this isn't my direct line, so I did not pursue them further. Sarah Ann Gullion is the daughter of Samuel Gullion and Susan Orie, both of Virginia. Samuel Gullion born about 1817. I hope this helps in your search. Leslie

My dad was a Gullion and I am looking for information for my children. His father was Hebert Gullion and lived in Gallatin, Tx. Hebert Gullion had brother's named Lee, William (Bill), and a sister named Alva Dee. I think they descended from 3 brother's from Ireland-Scotland, and 1 of them possibly settled in the Alabama area. I know nothing of their parents and would like to. Does anyone have any information on this Gullion line?

Response to B.G. on Gullion

B.G.: Not sure how I am supposed to send you a reply to your Gullion info -- no e-mail address I can find.

I descend from the Jeremiah Gullion of Pennsylvania and Kentucky who fought in Rev War. I am curious if there is a connection between your Tory family and my colonial ancestors. the name for both families was O'Gullion, of course, in the earliest records. Patrick and Mary O'Gullion, parents of Jeremiah, are my first known ancestors. Patrick born c. 1705 -- died 1805; his obit say "very old" when he came to KY about 1778 or so. I've thought since the Duncan/Hugh O'Gullions were Tories and Jeremian and brothers John and Robert fought on the other side, perhaps there was a permanent rif in the family. What do you know (or think?)

Jason Gullion, Sr., I thought it was Duncan O'gullion who bit the fellows ear off when they were in prison in Williamsburg VA. Duncan was arrested for being a Tory, next thing we know the Sheriff is selling Duncan's horse to cover his expenses for arresting Duncan -- Duncan has escaped. but his freedom was short lived because Duncan is re-arrested and the Sheriff is headed for Williamsburg for trial. I have not seen the results of the trial -- Duncan was a Tory, though -- but a researcher years ago said she had the trial records and that Duncan had bitten a fellow's ear off in the jail house. But Hugh and Duncan were, I believe, brothers . . so there could have been more than one ear bitten off. I'd like to know a bit about your line as best you know it. You're from the SW VA gullion line?

Everything helps, Sarah, like a puzzle with a trillion pieces and we each have a few pieces and have to try to put the puzzle together to make a picture. The name was O'Gullion at one time, our Gullion Patriarch was Patrick O'Gullion and his name was nearly always shown as such. Patrick died in Oct 1803 and his obit is in the Lexington KY newspaper -- over 100 years old, "was an old man when he came here over 20 years ago." The tax records for the years leading up to the year of his death sometimes are annotated "very old man" -- gosh, I would so much like to have seen him!!! and talked with him!!!

Where did your Phillip B P Gullion, Sr., live?

thanks for the information.
Re: Gullion Bible

Nancy, those pages aren't from a family Bible, they are from Isabella (Pattie) Gullion's pension application for her husband, Jeremiah's, service in the Revolutionary War. I have a copy of the entire pension record. There were two double pages of the book, one page had comments about the shock or "colvulsion" in the earth on 16 th da of Dec'r 1811 . . other words about the shock later that day and the next -- this was of course the earthquake in New Madrid MO in 1811/1812 that has been estimated to have been 8.0 on the Richter scale and was felt for hundreds of miles around. The second page of that double-page had the words, George Gullion was born March 27 1795. The double-page that I think you are describing, has the birthdates of Jeremiah gullion and his wife and children, plus the children of Jeremiah's and Isabelle's deceased son, Thomas Gullion -- William Gullion born May 28th 1801, and Nelly (Eleanor) Gullion was born April the 18th 1803.

I puzzled for some time -- okay, like 30 years -- over the two William Gullion's that appear to both be sons of Jere'h and Isabella. I had thought that they had a son William born in 1787, and that son had perhaps died, and they named a son born later, William, also -- a pretty common thing in those days if a child died to name a second child with the same name. About a year ago I pulled out that thick pension application and was looking at those pages again -- with my magnifying glass -- I think the child listed on the left side, under Rachel gullion, is not Wm Gullion, but Ann Gullion. the Ann is written in kind of an uphill manner but the entire line is written uphill and so are the next few lines. The letter to MG Gullion, typed, dated 1938, states that the children of Jeremiah and Isabella gullion were, Thomas, Rachel, William born July 20, 1787, Mary, Jeremiah, George, Jean . . but Isabella's will or estate settlement names, in addition to those children, Ann Kelly who married Jack Kelly, living in KY, William is named in her estate as resident of Kentucky . . I think early researchers found this letter to MG Gullion and jumped on the clerk's error in reading the "Ann" as "Wm" and nobody questioned it. I was wondering why Ann wasn't listed in the "begats" in William's book and went back to the original document, rather than the clerk's letter to look at the children and birth dates. The William "born June the 7th 1802" was perhaps, Isabella's last child, she was born 1760 so was 42 when he was born. I believe this William was the William Gullion who was in the 1830 Hickman Co KY census, where there are two males between the ages of 20 <30 (so born between 1800 - 1809/10 (depending on month). Living next door to William of Hickman Co in 1830 is Luke Wiley, most probably a relative of William's wife, Elizabeth Wiley.

There are Gullion researchers who believe, and with supportive documentation, that Jeremiah & Isabella had other children, one of whom was a Joseph, that weren't named in either William Gullion His Book nor Isabella's estate documents.

the handwriting on William's book in regard to the earthquake appears different from the handwriting on the second page listing all the children and Jere'h & Bell's birth dates. And as you noted, the handwriting under the heavy line on the right side is definitely different from that preceding it.

So, will we ever KNOW? Well,as my distant cousin, Walter, said, when talking about people who would state, "Oh, I'm absolutely postive that he's my 8th great-grandfather!", Walter said, "Hell, I'm not absolutely positive that my father is my father!"

Minnie, do we have a record somewhere that shows the Gullion's/O'Gullion's were Scots-Irish? I think the name was French, originally (if there is such a thing as original), Guilliame (William) and came into the British Isles with William the Conqueror in 1066. But I'd like a piece of paper or book or something to tell me that. How do you know Scots-Irish? and what do you think of my theory?

regards, Linda

I have some photocopies purportedly from a Gullion family Bible two pages are:

In large, bold handwriting:
"Jeremiah Gullion was born Nov 28 1758
Bell Gullion was born March 3 1760
Tho Gullion was born April 3 1781
Rachel Gullion was born February 3 1783
Wm Gullion was born July 20 1787
Mary Gullion was born August 20 1789
Jeremiah Gullion was born August 10th 1793
George Gullion was born March 27th 1795
Jean Gullion was born January 26th 1798"
In fine, shaky handwriting
"William Gullion was born June 7th 1802
(heavy line here)
Thomas Gullions Children
William Gullion was born May 28th 1801
Nelly Gullion was born April 18th 1803"

Does anyone know who's Bible this is and who has possession of it now? I would like to have the publisher's name and date of publication.
Assuming this is written contemporaneously with the events, we now know who the parents of the William Gullion born in 1801 are. I'm not sure this answers the question of the parentage of the 1802 William. I wouldn't think that Jeremiah and Isabella would have a William born in 1787 and living until 1846 AND a William born in 1802.
If you have any information concerning these entries in a family Bible I'd appreciate it.
Thank you,
Nancy Filbert
I've still got the book of course. I just can't think of an easy way to copy it. I think you had some of Anne's later info too. Do you have any ideas?
