Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 12 May 1904, Wapanucka, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

TO REVOKE DOCTORS' LICENSE

Attorney General Begins Suit to Prevent Alleged Quacks from Practicing

Guthrie: Attorney General Simons has filed in the district court there a suit against Dr. Calvin D. Gully of Guthrie demanding that the defendant's license to practice medicine in Oklahoma be revoked, and that the doctor be forever prohibited from further use of the rights under the license now held by him.

This is the first of several such suits to be filed by the attorney general.

Gully is a graduate of the Independent and Metropolitan Medical College of Chicago, alleged by Mr. Simon's petition to be a mill diploma school. This suit is the result of the recent war against alleged quack practitioners in Oklahoma and is a victory for the Oklahoma Medical Society and the state board of health.
Maybe next time you are in Hawaii I will be visiting also.
Sarah

I'm sorry we'll apparently miss each other. I do look forward to meeting your daughter.

Thanks so much for the information. I didn't have anything on Bell, except that my grandmother thought her full name was Isabelle. I have Betty Preston b. abt 1859 based on her reported age of 11 in the 1870 Boyle Co census.

I have Manetta Marian as Bernetta "Nettie" Marion.

For William, the U.S. Federal Census Mortality Schedule for year ending 1-June-1870 lists a William Preston, 7, died in January in Perryville, KY. That could be him, or there are several other William Prestons of roughly the right age in Jessamine Co, KY and Greene Co, MO in the 1910-1920 time span. My grandmother's notes said she thought he was a 'blacksheep' of the family, whatever that meant. I sure wish I had been interested in this stuff while she was alive.

Do you know if any of these folks besides Manetta (Bernetta) and James had children?

I've met (via email) two people who have done a lot of research on the central Ky Prestons and Baldens. I'd be happy to share what I have gathered from them and other sources.

Lewis Preston had a male 5 & under 10 living in his household in 1840. This would have been the right age for our Francis Asbury Preston. Neither Toliver, James, Jilson, Enoch or the other Toliver had a male living in the household who was old enough to be our Francis Asbury Preston. William had 2 males old enough, but we have accounted for all six of the males in his household in 1840. Patrick Preston had disappeared by 1840. Plus, he would have probably been a little too old to father a child. No one has yet been able to tie the central Ky Prestons to the Prestons in eastern Ky or Va.

One researcher thinks Lewis is a son of John Jilson Preston (b. Va), but this was only a family story. Lewis married Elizabeth Griffin on 26-Jun-1817 in Jessamine Co, KY. I have five children for them: Catherine, Richard T, Jilson, Matilda and Elisha. I'm fairly confident of the first four, not so much on Elisha.

I've also been working on the Baldens and I sent your Mom a package of information I had gathered on them. Would you like a copy? If it's convenient I would like to see what you have on the Baldens.

Hi Sarah,
You might recall we exchanged email some time ago. I believe we are 3rd cousins. It is indeed a small world.

I think your conclusion about Lewis and Elizabeth being Asbury Preston's parents is likely to be correct. Lewis is the only Preston of that period for which we have unaccounted children. I have not been able to prove it however. Do you know if any of Francis Asbury's children other than Bernetta had children?

P.S. I'll probably be seeing your family in Hawai'i the first week of October.

Mason Gully

I have a Mason Gully, b. abt 1820, son of William Gully and Sarah Burton. He married Elizabeth Ann Hamilton 21-Dec-1842 in Jessamine Co, KY. Census data indicates he moved to Johnson Co, IN about 1853-1855. and then to Grundy Co, MO about 1863-1868. At some point between 1850 and 1860 he re-married to Alice [?]. The census data indicates a total of seven children, but I can only say the first three were Elizabeth's.

The 1850 census in Jessamine Co, KY indicates an Asbury Preston, age 18 living in the household (both Asbury and Mason are shown as blacksmiths). I believe Asbury later married Mason's niece, Mary Minerva Sedore.

Does anyone have any other information on this family?

I have an Ezekial Slocumb Gully born 26 Sep 1831 in Wayne County North Carolina. He married Hester Thedford then he married Rebecca Hines and then he married Camantha Campbell and died in Sumter County Alabama on 17 Sep 1896. I have no listing on children in this family but perhaps he sired a boy with Camantha Campbell. Try Census searches on these names in the 1850 through 1900 files. The only other thing I know is that they were probably from the north eastern part of Tennessee. One of their daughters, my great grandmother, was born in Tiprill (Claiborne Co.) TN in 1894. I can't read the writing in my grandmothers bible, but Ida's middle name is either Melrine or Mehine.
