I'm replying to a very old post - but I am also related to you. Please respond when/if you see this post as I would love to get information on the extended Gunner family. My mother is Joan Gunner Milam - oldest child of Michael Gunner. I have some family pictures from the 1920's in Missouri you might like to see (including one of your mother Irene). We have a huge Gunner reunion planned for this summer and expect over 200 - all descendents of Michael & Claudia.

Re: Gunner family London Kensington and Clapham UK

I am very puzzled by the post made by grandma5five on 17th March 09. Rebecca Savage nee Gunner was the daughter of John Gunner a gardener, and she was born in 1834 in Kensington. She married Edward Savage in 1857. Known children are Edward Savage born 1861, Owen Dennis Savage born 1865, Rosa Nellie Savage born 1872 and Annie Savage born 1863.
The Ellen M Gunner referred to in that post is said to have married in 1926 and then to have had 4 children in 4 years. So it seems she was probably born around 1900. Even if she were to be a hitherto unfound child of Rebecca Savage, surely her surname would have been Savage not Gunner, unless she was born before Rebecca's marriage. If she were to have been born before 1857 then I fail to see how she could have had her children in 1929-33. I suspect the generations have been muddled somewhat. I am happy to help to try to sort it out and to share my information sources. Rebecca did have a brother John Gunner but he was a dyer not a gardener.

I am looking for information on Ellen M. Gunner who married Algernon Percy Patterson in 1926 and their children. Ellen's parents are Rebecca Gunner Savage b. 1838 in Kensington and John Gunner, a gardener.

Ellen and Algernon had the following children:
Muriel D. b. Mar 1929, Wandsworth; Algernon R J b. Sept. 1930, Lambeth; Rita M. b. Mar 1932, Lambeth; Patricia M. b. Dec 1933, Lambeth.
Believe their marriage was dissolved est. 1940's.

Gunner in Montréal or in Canada

My last name is Gunner and I'm living in the Montréal area.

My cousins and I are the "last" Gunner generation in Montreal, according to our research.

Does anyone know where our ancestors come from ? Our grandmother is not sure whether they came from Germany or Ireland. Her last name is Huberdeau and her mother was an Indian ... although she never confirmed it (unfortunately, she's probably ashamed).

But the funniest part of our story is this : we all speak French and no one is bilingual ! Our only explanation is the following : Irish immigrants wanted to attend catholic schools and in many areas, there were only French speaking schools.

Any help is welcome,

Josée

George William Gunner

I am looking for the ancestors of George William Gunner, born supposedly in the area of Kent, England. I do not know for sure the date of his birth but I do know that his older brother Frederick Alfred Gunner was born November 21, 1823, supposedly in Clapham, Surrey, England, the eldest of 10 children, and died November 3, 1897, in Listowell, Ontario, Canada. This George William Gunner was married to Mary Ingmyre (Ingmire?), supposedly of Kent, England. His son of the same name was born July 11, 1857, in Brooklyn, New York, USA, and died March 22, 1918, in Wallingford, Connecticut, USA. He may have been the son of John Gunner and Juliana Laidman and christened May, 1829, in Lambeth, Surrey, England, but I am not certain of the validity of this information. I am seeking to confirm his parentage and to discover his ancestors. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My e-mail address is gunner@eznet.net

Yes, Nick, I would be most interested in receiving your info. I am trying to confirm John Gunner as my ancestor. I am pretty sure but not certain. I did find that John was married to Juliana Laidman. A search at http://www.familysearch.org shows John and Juliana as the parents of Jane, Frederick, Louisa, George, John, Henry & Joseph, with christenings ranging from 1822-1835 in Surrey, so that sounds like it fits with your Juliana. I will send more info by e-mail.

I also saw the site for "The John Gunners of London" and tried unsuccessfully to contact Stephen & Evelyn Ross. Perhaps they will find this thread.

Bill Gunner

I also know that one of the sisters moved to Bournemouth to start a hairdressing business, but I don't her married name. I hope someone out there can help me 'cos there's so much family I'd love to meet. My fathers name was Hector and he was the youngest.

Dear Bill,

Thanks for your reply. I presumed the Gunners of London site was yours since it also mentioned Juliana. That's a coincidence indeed!

What can I offer you? A gedcom of the descendants of John Laidman and his wife Juliana (parents of "your" Juliana)? We did link these two up to another group backwards, which took them to the C16, but the link has been considered too tenuous to maintain, so John and Juliana are the earliest ancestors of a Laidman group we call Southwark/1.

I have well over 1000 blood Laidmans in my database. In order to organise these we have divided them into groups of related individuals. Some groups contain thousands of people, some just one or two. The object is to link up all the groups to one huge group of Laidmans with a common ancestor. We are convinced this is the case, and at the moment members from several groups are supplying DNA samples which will confirm the common ancestor theory beyond doubt (false negatives aside).

I would be happy to send you gedcoms of anything you like, but I fear I am not happy to send paper copies (just too much, and I have a pathetic printer!).

Let me know what you would like.

Best wishes

Nick

George [?],

I have been looking for you since April 2001 when I deiscovered a site called "The John Gunners of London". The email address mentioned on the site was shipwreck.ross@worldnet.att.net but every message I sent came back undelivered!

I run a one-name study for the LAIDMAN name, and your message came up as I was browsing for Laidmans (as if I haven't got enough of them!). I do have a Juliana Laidman born 15 Jan 1800 Southwark, who would fit with your George William Gunner. There is every chance that this is the one as Laidman is a rare name, and Juliana an unusual given name. Juliana was the daur of John Laidman bap. 20 July 1760 Bowes, Yorks. and Juliana b. ca 1770 London. Maiden name possible LOVEGROVE.

I have no husband for young Juliana, but have not researched forward on her family. However I have 1420 descendants of "your" Juliana's parents if you are interested! If you have any info I should be delighted, and should be interested to know your source for suspecting Juliana to be wife of George William Gunner.

With best wishes

Nick Michael
Switzerland
