Pekka & Herman,
I'm afraid I don't know much about Gunsts in Russia or Eastern Europe, but I find it very interesting. I spent a semester in St. Petersburg in Spring 07 and visited Riga and Finland during my time there. Let me know if you find any more information!
Thanks,
Jake Gunst

Gunst in Michigan

Does anyone out there have Gunst family who settled in Michigan in the late 1800?
My grandmother was adopted by Peter and Mary Gunst in Holland, MI around 1876. There is a record in Holland, MI for a Jacoba Gunst being adopted by Peter and Mary. The court won't send me the records because my grandmother went by the given name of Mamie and I can't prove Jacoba and Mamie are one and the same. Also, Peter is Mamie's uncle. Mamie was born in Allegan Co., MI and her biolgical father was born in Hanover, Germany. I think her mother was probably a Gunst.
Help?
Shirley

We know that
Jacob Gunst immigrated to the US in 1839 and his
parents were Meyer and Minnie Gunst. We have
been told by family elders that the family originated
in Hagenbach, Germany. Having difficulty tracing
Meyer and Minnie from the US but will work on it.

Thanks,

Kristin

Re: Lena Gunst

Hi,

I thought I heard of an Oliver gunst in New York (descendants i think on Long Island). I met a Kathy Gunst whose father is Oliver - in Boston and she told me she was from Long Island. She claimed we were not related
as my side of the family is Jewish and they are not. Relgiously speaking,
the Gunst's are all over the place.

Lena and William... have you tried the Mormon's database for their information? There was a Lena Oberndorfer Gunst that married one of my great great uncles, Michael Gunst. She disappeared though sometime after the Civil War (her husband was in Va during the war and then unaccountably went back North afterwards). Lena OBERNDORFER Gunst was the sister of Bettie O. Gunst and wife of Henry Gunst (my great great grandfather). In other words, the brother married sisters. They all lived in Hanover County, Va. for a while. However, the census around 1880 in Va for Henry is interesting. Take a look at his household and see if all the children are his? I guess my question to you is this - was Lena born Lena GUNST?

There was also a Lena Gunst (named after the missing sister) that according to our records in Richmond, died in childhood.

Michael Gunst (husband of Lena) returned to New York state, remarried, and lived in NYC. My older cousin, Richard Gunst, used to visit him as a child with his father, Emmanuel ("Manny") Gunst Apparently, Michael's own children (of which he had many) did not keep in contact with him. I do not know who the mother of the children was. Michael died in NYC at an old age after being hit by a truck crossing the street.

Kristin Gunst
iamkgunst@aol.com
could you please cc me directly on any responses and put Gunst family in the header?

(look up the 1880 Virginia Census for Hanover County.)

Gunst. He must have adopted the name Oliver in his middle age years. His father was John (Johannes) Gunst, who emigrated from what is now Germany and died in 1903. Albert had a sister Lena and two brothers, Charles and William.

Richard
Yes, I did find the information I was looking for. My Gunst family goes back to the 1600's in Sint Annaland, Zeeland, Netherlands.

I haven't found any family connection to Germany or any Jacob Gunst that fits your time period.

Hagenbach, Germany, is located in southwest Germany, just a few miles across the border from France. It is a few miles north of where the Rhine River enters Germany. (I have a huge map of Germany which it very helpful.)

Keep looking! Something will show up sometime!

April

There is also a Gunst branch in Perth - started by Ernest after his divorce from Lena Croft. Loved to hear from you

Gunscht material. My cousin Shirley mentioned you had material on Gunscht. I have some documents, including 1889 last will & testament of Catherina Gunscht from Frankenhausen. Imprinted on it is "Rudolstadt Schwarzburg-Furstentein". Her hubby already died so his first name is not mentioned.
