My great grandmother, Ida Marie Sophie Suddendorf Davis, had a few sisters but I have been unable to locate information about their names. One sister married a Guse and lived in Owatonna. I believe that she had some children--Eddie and Mamie Guse, are two possible names. Does anyone ahve any information about this family?

Ida's mother was Minnie Rodesky/Rudesky and married a Christian Suddendorf. They lived in Owatonna. Some of the family moved to Verndale, Minnesota.

Ida also had a brother names Louis Suddendorf.

re: . . maternal grandfather was Arthur Gusey, . . . would love to join the DNA project, but . . .

Sorry, Tom. We would love having you but we need men with the surname Guse (or Gusey). Perhaps you know some cousins with the Gusey name who are interested in genealogy. Let me know offline if you do.

I'll keep my eyes open for Gusey family clues. Btw, in my home town in Illinois, all the Guse folks around there pronounced their name as if it were spelled the way you folks do. Maybe there is some kind of connection. They all came from Pomerania, in what now is western Poland.

Regards,
Clay
clay@foxcats.com

We are still looking to add more males named Guse to our project. Regarding its status, we are now fair certain that we have identified two of the lines of Guse families in North America.

A relative, who lives near Toronto whose grandfather came from Kreis Belgard, has a near exact match with another Canadian who lives in western Ontario. Both families trace their ancestors back to the same village. Neither family knew of the other before genetic testing.

We found another line from Kreis Neustettin. These lines are quite different, so are not genetically related. Another two men have an exact match and their ancestors were from villages just a few miles apart.

If you know of a Guse who might be interested, it would be exciting to learn that his ancestors match one of these families. You could search for the "guse dna project" to get more details.

Once there, you'll also find the FAQ link to lots of good answers. Thanks,
Clay

You mentioned: ". . if anyone ... found out the "true" pronunciation." There are many. In Germany, there is only one; but in the new world, there are quite a few. In the old country, German pronunciation rules apply, so the name Guse is pronounced as if it were Gusa. (rhymes with Azusa) But, here all the variations are perfectly okay. Back home in Illinois, the Guse family name sounds like "doozy" among many other easy rhymes; if you're not too choosy. :-)
Clay

Clay;
My maternal grandfather was Arthur Gusey, born in Franklin, MN in 1905. His father was Julius Martin Gusey, born in 1879 in Wisconsin (don't know where). His father was Christian or Martin, married to Pauline. I would love to join the DNA project, but Arthur was not able to have children, so my mother and aunt were adopted. I have not been able to make a solid connection for Christian in Wisconsin, although I did find a marriage record for Christian and Pauline in Milwaukee, and I think that's them. Do you or anyone else have any info that would help me? Thanks. Tom.

Christian Guse

Greetings everyone. I am looking for a little help with my Gusey side. My grandfather, Arthur Wayne Gusey, and his family were from Redwood Falls / Lake Lillian area of Minnesota. His parents were Julius Martin Gusey (b. 15 Jul 1879) and Johanna (nee Burkheart, b. 1 Aug 1881). I know Julius was born in Wisconsin, but don't know where. I believe his parents were Chris (Christian) and Pauline (Klinger, b. Feb 1848). I have found a marriage record in Milwaukee county, WI for Chris Guse and Pauline Klinge in 1876, which would be about right, and they are on the 1880 Milwaukee census. I just am not sure if they are the same.
The family story goes that Christian was married before Pauline, and that the kids from that marriage are Guse, and they kids from Pauline are Gusey. He died around 1891/2 in Wisconsing, and then Pauline remarrried to Albert Wentland and they moved to Redwood or Renville County, MN.
Anyone having any links or information to clear some of this up would be appreciated. I have no idea where they came from prior to Wisconsin, or where they lived in Wisconsin. Thanks
