My parents are from Giedlarowa, Poland which is in the Podkarpackie vovoidship (the gov't changed the vovoidships a few years ago so before it was the Rzeszow vovoidship). Most of our family is still there and I have strong connections to them. There are quite a number of Gut's in that region of S.E. Poland as well as groups in NYC, CT etc. I also speak Polish fluently and perhaps could be of some assistance in helping you search. Many of the names of people and towns are butchered so I'm not surprised if people are encountering roadblocks in their search for ancestors.

Hi Jodie,

I'd be happy to share my info with you. I'd also like to know how far you've gotten. I'm working back through my mother's line, both her father's and her mother's ancestors.
I haven't been able to get past her grandparents, though.

The family line is in Switzerland, where my mother was born and raised, then came to America when she was almost 20 years of age.

So I'd love to work with you on this. Let me know what you need and how I can help, ok?

Bye! Riki

Hello Jodie,

If you want to do some research on the Gut family, a good place to start is geneanet.org/. I believe it is located in France or your country. I am in the USA.

Joining geneanet is free, and allows you to do some research. I know there Gut family is located on the website in Zurich, Switzerland, because my family is related to the Gut Family. At the website, click on the flag at the top of the screen to have it translate to your language. Join the geneanet website. After you join they will accept your name and password. Once you are into the website, go to quick search at top left of screen. On next screen enter Gut in surname area and place, such as Zurich, and it will give you a list of names of people who have their genealogy files located at the website. Click on a name to look at their family tree they have posted.

Good luck,

Tom tmstaley@netzero.net

My friend, Andre, in Zurich is a distant relative. I can forward your email address to him if you wish. The reason I am hesitant in giving his address is he is a medical student currently working on his thesis. It is a difficult and busy time for him. He has not contacted me for over a month. I can also forward the part of my family tree which contains the Gut family information I have. Once he gets your email, and his workload falls off I am sure he will contact you. He has been searching for family that immigrated to the US, and I have been forwarding any information I find. My personal email address is stehli04@yahoo.com. I am located in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

Hi,

I would love to know more about your friend and what town he's from. My mother was born in Switzerland, and her maiden name is Gut! Her father came from Thalwil, and her mother came from Rueschlikon, both outside Zurich near Lake Zurich. She grew up in Basel, and moved to Pennsylvania with my father after they married over there. We moved up to Michigan some years ago, and I've been having a hard a time trying to trace her family roots. Please let me hear from you and/or your friend soon!

Riki

He married an ELIZABETH CLARK(?) and he then changed his name to GOOD. Frank died in Chicago, IL on 1 April 1967. If you know of this person and have information that you are willing to share, PLEASE let me know. I am hitting a terrible 'brick wall' here. Thank you in advance.

I don't know if I am related to the Guts or not, but my great-grandfather's godmother was one Catharina Gut. Because of that, I have looked for Guts in the Ellis records, trying to find out, through their destinations, if they are perhaps related. My great-great grandparents were Jan Bak and Marianna Malec, both from Mazury-Poland. They settled in Passaic, NJ, and then moved to Garfield, NJ.

Hello,

I am looking for information on the Gut (sometimes spelled Gutt) family. My grandfather was Joseph Gut born in Galacia (a place called Tomasczow, I think) around 1885, and my grandmother was Mary Hammer, also born in Galacia (Lvov) in 1905. Both of them emigrated to America (Cleveland, OH) in the early 1900's.

My grandmother considered herself Polish, but I guess she must have officially been an Austrian citizen since she was born while Galacia was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. I think that my earlier ancestors must have been German, Austrian,or Swiss, since neither "gutt" nor "Hammer" are Polish names. Unfortunately, I have very little information on that side of my family beyond the my grandparents and teh names of my great-grandparents.

Any information on the families, or even the history of that area and why german-named people might have been living there, where they might have come form, and so on wouldbe greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Doug Linder (my father changed his name)

Hi Christine, my family also immigated from Oberbergen in 1874 and settled in St. Paul. According to the information I have recieved through a Mr. Schill living in Oberbergen; Roman Strub married Elizabeth Gut 9 Feb.1818. Elizabeth's father is listed as Igantius b.13 April 1751, her grandfather also Igantius born April 26, 1721 and her gggrandfather Michael birthdate unknown. Other names from Oberbergan in my line would be Kehlin,Mayr,K"Hlhofer, Gerig, Burkart, Gutgsell, and Reichenbach. If you have any other information or would like a copy of what I have, let me know.
Melissa- The Guts who came via Ellis are my direct relatives--my mom's uncle and family. The Bak's (now changed to Bonk's) are also our cousins. They lived in New Jersey--not sure which town althoguht I have a feeling that the last generation settled somewhere aorund Edison). My mom kept in touch with a few of the Bonk brothers who were named Steve, Joe and Frank. Frank is th eonly one who is still living. He's about 80.

Emial me if you have any questions: krysiagut@yahoo.com
8/18/03

Christine, I also noticed that the Gut family hails from Switzerland but with time they moved to Germany and then Poland. My parents are originally from Poland. They emigrated to the U.S. in the late 1960's. My mom's uncle moved to Detroit, Michigan around the time of the war. He married and had kids--I think the majority are still living in that area but we lost touch due to the big age differenc etc. I'm interested in learning what you have discovered so far. Their daughter's name was JANINA
They were supposed to live in Philadelphia.

STANISLAW changed his name to STANLEY GOODMAN and lived in CHICAGO.
If anybody recognizes those names I will be willing to share my info.

All of them together left behind 13 siblings.

Hi Susan,
I just responded to Jason's message. My parents are from Poland. My mom's uncle (I think his name was Jakub) came to the U.S. as a young adult. Setteled down in the Detroit area I believe. That side of the family I know for certain changed the spelling of their last name to GUTT as opposed to GUT- probably due to the mispronunciation. If you ever go to Ellis Island you will see that there are Gut's in Detroit. They are my relatives but I really do not know them.

Hi Jason, I saw your message and thought I would reply. My Grandfather's name was Stanislaus Gut. He was born on May 8, 1896 and died July 14, 1977. I never new him because he and my grandmother were divorced when my dad was 7 years old. I met him one time when she died. As I understand it, he was born in Poland and came to the USA as a teenager. He lived in Philidelphia most of his life. My Dad's name is Thomas J. Gutt (added a t, not sure why). He has lived in Oklahoma since 1945. Not many of us Gut's out there. Would love to hear from you.
