Hi Fred-
Was reading some of your Ancestry.com messages and source data provided. It showed (possibly from notes of Floyd Guthrie) that first papers in Elbert Co. GA for Robert was Aug 1792. Here's some additional info from a Colquitt cousin:
Troy Colquitt owns a farm in Elbert Co. GA and was researching it's history. He found a July 1810 deed from a Nathaniel Booth to Robert Booth (land up Broad River northwest of Hwy 72 between Elbert Co. and Madison Co. GA). Part of the deed reads "Contains 150 acres with the mill and plantation included and being part of the same tract or parcel of land granted to ROBERT GUTHREY by his excellency , Samuel Elbert then governor of the state, the 4th day of February, one thousand seven hundred and eighty five." This supports that Robert moved to Elbert Co. GA by 1785.
Per Troy- This property is about 10 miles from the land that Beverly GUTHREY owned in Oglethorpe Co. GA .
My big interest is Beverly GUTHREY whom I believe might have some relation to the Robert Guthrie.Beverly was born 1755-1774 probably VA and m. Sarah Colquitt in Cumberland Co. VA 17 Dec 1793 (I have marriage record). It appears Beverly moved to Cumberland Co. GA by 1797 based on some deeds.
(I actually have 2 Guthrie lines but only believe this one may link to Robert because of timing/geographic proximity.)
Any info on possible connection of Robert and Beverly Guthrie appreciated.

Will of Robert Guthree Elbert County, GA April 12, 1797
In the Name of God Amen:
"I, Robert Guthree, of the state of GEORGIA and county of Elbert, bein sorely afflicted, but of perfect mind and memory, thanks be given unto God. Calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it

And as touching such worldly estate where with it hath pleased God to bless me with.
I give devise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form:

On July 18. 2005. I visited the site of the cemetery where he is buried. It is located on Holly Springs Road northeast of Bowman, Elbert County, GEORGIA. It is a large cemetery in two sections on two sides of the church. The present church was constructed in 1958 according to the cornerstone. A monument in front of the church says the original church was established in 1795. The oldest headstones are so eroded that they cannot be read. Anything before about 1835 is unreadable. There are a lot of these. There was no one around, so could not find out if they had a plot of the graves. Will try to write them when I get home. Took of pictures of the cemetery.
The Descendants of Robert Guthree:
The following information is a summary of the first 3 or 4 generations of descendants of Robert Guthree of Elbert Co., Georgia. Said Robert Guthree is the ancestor of Mrs. John McQueen GUTTERY. She published her book Guthrie and GUTTERY and Allied Families in 1956
In his will dated April 12, 1797 and entered into probate on September 12 1799, Robert Guthree of Elbert County, GA mentions his wife Betty and children William, Thomas, Leroy, Molly, Betsy, John and Nelly Reives.
On March 7, 1825, Leroy GUTTERY and John Williams entered into bond with Hall County, GEORGIA as the executors of the estate of Elizabeth GUTTERY. Also recorded in Book Misc. A page 44 Hall Co., GA is the appraisement of the property of Elizabeth Guthery. There appears to have been some trouble with the sale of the slaves, as this estate was not settled until 1834.
According to several accounts William Guthrie the son of the above Robert was born in 1778 in SOUTH CAROLINA. Sometime after the death of his father and before the death of his mother he moved with his wife Hannah first to Lincoln Co., TN and then to Walker Co., AL.
William and Hannah's children:
Robert (b. Feb. 26, 1801 in GA, d. Apr. 6, 1817 in AL m. Nov. 11, 1821 Sara Ann Williams (b. May 8, 1804, d. Feb. 8, 1881)).
Johnson (b. Mar. 12, 1806 in GA, d. May 26, 1876 in AL m. Mary Wilson (b. Feb. 22, 1807 d. Oct. 13, 1885))
John (b. 1807 in GA, m. Mary Rutledge)
Catherine (b. 1813 near Murfeesburo, TN d. 1882 m. John Downey)
Isham (b. 1814 near Murfeesburo, TN)
Hetty (b. 1815 near Murfeesburo, TN m. Henry Townley)
Mrs. John McQueen GUTHREY in her book traces the movement of William GUTHREY and his wife Hannah from GEORGIA to Tennessee to Alabama. She then shows the lines of descent of the children of William and Hannah including the daughters. The son's of William and Hannah were ministers and some of the history of the churches is given: especially the church at Holly Springs.
The first part of the book is a rehash of the early Guthrie history and as such contains the truths and inacuracies of the original writers.
The last part of the book is mostly information taken from census records. She has many Guthrie's listed, but no relationships. I feel that a careful study of these census records and court records of Walker Cherokee and Cullman Counties would almost certainly show the Cullman County Guthries are descendants of sons of William and Hannah Guthrie.
