Hi! I saw your post and couldn't resist a reply, to say "Rock on!" I'm an English teacher, too, and do not understand why people who post on message boards have to display such disregard for simple things like punctuation, capitalization, and spell-check! Maybe they are hunt-and-peck typists and never learned better. Some posts I see are almost unreadable--with mistakes that go back to 2nd grade. At least we don't have illegible hand-writing to contend with, too!

I came to the board to look for anyone working on Henry Zachariah Guthrie, born in South Carolina around 1820. Any connections you know of? He lived in Georgia, fought in the Civil War and was injured, and died in Alabama.

By the way, this family looks like some of the David Guthrie (b. ca. 1764) family that went from Franklin Co., VA. to Pendleton District (now Anderson Co.), SC. Is
that correct or have you gotten that far?

The farther back in history you go, the less education any particular person possessed. People charged with duties of a legal nature were required to read and write but were not
necessarily proficient with those requirements. When an odd name was encountered, these recorders usually spelled it phonetically (which wasn't always the correct spelling).
Going back at least 600 years in Scottish history, the only name for this family was GUTHRIE and had a Norse meaning of "a high and windy place", if memory serves me correctly.
With origins in eastern Scotland, the Guthries, likely, have a great deal of Scandinavian blood as they settled and intermingled with the people they found there. With the word Guthrie found in their vocabulary, it all sort of makes sense to me.
Anyway, Guthery, Guthrey, Guthry, Guttery, Gutry, Gutherie, etc. were all phonetic attempts at spelling Guthrie over the course of many hundreds of years. With your Thomas Guthery family example, I would just chalk it up to they got back to the correct spelling of the name. However it might currently be spelled though, it's the same family group, in totality.

The family of Thomas Guthery 1856-1926 and wife Margaret Long had numerous children. Starting with child James M. brn 1895 thier 4th or 5th child, the last named changed spelling from Guthery to Guthrie. Anybody know why?

As I recall, the book was about 200 pages with pictures of the founders, ships, companies owned, and other historical documents.

Hello!

I need some help. My great grandmother was Gertrude E. Guthrie, who was born 1903 in Nashville. What I need help on is her parents, John R. and Mollie T/F Guthrie. I have them living in the Nashville area from 1910-1930. John was born around 1860/1862 and Mollie around 1866. I am having absolute trouble finding John's parents. I have one census clue from 1870, giving John Guthrie's parents as Robert H. and Martha L. But the birthdate is 1858. Does anyone have any help they could offer? Thank you!

Katie L.

Dear John
I'm so happy to have found your post. The heroine (Nora Lape) would have been my grandmother.
We have not been (up to this point) to find anything on her, as my father Dedrick L. Lape and his twin sister Dorothy were both sent to an orphanage at about age 5, in about 1910. Apparently the mother died and story was told that the father died too, but we believe he just left and can find no traces of him (William J. Lape)
I am hoping to find Nora's death notice somewhere, if you should run into anything of any names of William J. or Nora please contact me.

Thank you so much for all your research.

Virginia (Lape) Danner
VLDanner@msn.com

The Cyrus Bacon you are looking into seems to be my GGfather on my mother's side. My Gfather, named Bert (according to my aunts) Bacon died in the 40's I believe. My mother Collen born in 1931, the youngest and a few more sibling were raised in the Corvalis State Children's Work Farm from about 1933 or so. She married William James Petrie at age 16 and never again lived in Oregon. Some lived there until just a few years ago, my Aunt Katherine passed and was the last of that generation. My father was in the military so we (I) never had contact with our family. I did connect with Katherine about 8-10 yrs ago and started to learn some of my family history, quite a chore. Many Bacon's are buried in Cornleius, OR. Bacona did exist, I have been there. Only one old house and a logging road named NW Bacona Ridge RD, about 8 miles north of Buxton, OR. I even found an old map showing it. I do have a pictures of Cyrus and his wife I believe as well some of Bert-Wert Bacon's children. If this sounds right you can email me at alliedvan@aol.com
