Re: William Alexander NC->Missouri

Thank you for the marriage source on William Alexander.

He claimed to be a Capt in the Rev War (it is on his tombstone in Missouri). He is accepted by the DAR (DAR# A001264). For that reason I am accepting a 1759 birth year (saw that somewhere with no documentation).

The best possibility I can find for parents of William is very sketchy, but it is James Alexander and Mary who came to NC from Maryland.

- Since William served in the Rev War the 1759 birth date is plausible
- In an unsourced list of James and Mary's children, there is a William born in 1759
- This James tried to serve in the Rev War and had another son Matthew who did
- I have ruled out all the other parents of William Alexanders that I can find in NC at the time.
- William was, like James and Mary, from Rowan County.
- http://alexanderdna.org/AlexGens.html shows a William son of James

I have convinced myself that he is most definitely not the son of the James Alexander who married Mary Peden, but those seem to get confused.

I have about 1200 of my alleged ancestors treed up, and I have spent more time trying to find the parents of this William Alexander than any other.

John Dee Guyton

Am trying to find any trace of John Dee Guyton, my husband's grandfather. His son (my husband's father, also named John Dee Guyton) was born in 1915 in Hamilton Chattanooga TN. His mother was Mae Hallmark, who would have been 15 or 16 years old at his birth. There was no birth certificate issued, and though my husband's father was told his mother and father had been married, I can find no proof of that, nor of the divorce she said they got later. I really have no evidence that he existed; just what John Dee Guyton Jr. said his mother told him. I thought the middle name "Dee" would help, but it may have become "D" on legal documents, or maybe the name was part of a story Mae told to make her son feel better.

Hi--I am doing research on my husband's family (Guyton) in Bartow Co. (Cartersville). He tells me that there are two different Guyton families there. His ancestors are the same in generations 1 and 2, but in generation 3 his ancestor is Jacob Sanders Guyton (b. 1839), then Lucius Allison Guyton (b. 1868) and finally his father Ransom Stewart Guyton (b. 1910). I did not find the Marion Jackson Guyton (b. 1835) to be a brother of Jacob Sanders Guyton, although they may be. My husband's name is Carlton Renna Guyton (b. 1934). His mother was Clara Inez Starnes.
Jan Guyton

I haven't done any research for a couple monthes. I show that William Alexander married Elizabeth Fish 4/4/1797 in Lincoln County, North Carolina (marriage bond #000070744). I believe William's father was Samuel Alexander B:abt 1756 in Tyrell County, North Carolina and he died in 1778. I have not found William's mother at this time.

Hello Kitty, I was just searching through messages and came across yours. I don't want to offend you with any comments or information, but my line is the one with John Guyton from England who lived in Maryland and they miagrated all the way to Sulligent in Lamar County. I do know that my GGGGrandfather owned a plantation there and there is a Guyton cememtary located near the homestead. I have always heard that the owner would give his last name to his slaves for identification purposes. I have no idea if this is true or there is actually mixed blood here. If so, we are related. Could you tell me if you ever found anything? I will be happy to share what I have, maybe it will help.
Kelly Cranford

Re: Nancy Guyton

The ancestry of Nancy Guyton is probably as follows:-

Samuel Guyton (born c 1769 in Maryland) and wife Rebecca (born c 1772 in Maryland)

Benjamin Guyton (born c 1732 in Maryland, married 13 December 1753 in Baltimore County, Maryland, died 22 June 1801 in Baltimore County, Maryland, will probated 22 July 1801 in Baltimore County, Maryland) and wife Amelia Scarf (born c 1732)

Benjamin Guyton (baptised 4 February 1701 (Old style)/1702 (New style) at St Martin at Palace, Norwich, England, emigrated to Maryland about 1719, died 1776, will probated July 1776 in Baltimore County, Maryland) and wife unknown, possibly Elizabeth Kidd

From the will of Benjamin Guyton dated 22 June 1801 and probated 22 July 1801 it is known that he had a son, Samuel Guyton.

It is a reasonable presumption, though not proven, that this is the same Samuel Guyton who is recorded in Kentucky from 1800 onwards. This Samuel Guyton appears in a tax list for Shelby County, Kentucky, dated 7 August 1800, in the 1810 census for Shelby County, Kentucky, in the 1820 census for West Port, Henry County, Kentucky, (indexed by Ancestry.com as Same Guyton), in the 1820 census for Oldham County, Kentucky, (recorded as Samuel Guiton and indexed by Ancestry.com as Samuel Gailon), in the 1840 census for Oldham County, Kentucky, (recorded as Samuel Guiton and indexed by Ancestry.com as Sanan Guiton), and the 1850 census for Oldham County, Kentucky, (recorded at Samuel Guyton) where his wife is named as Rebecca.

As no other Guyton families are known to have moved to Kentucky by the early 1800s, a further reasonable presumption is that all the Guytons born or living in Kentucky in the early nineteenth century are related to Samuel Guyton and his wife, Rebeccca. From the 1810 to 1840 censuses, it appears that they may have had up to fifteen children though, in the absence of named individuals apart from the head of household, some of them may be sons or daughters in law or grandchildren or other residents. From later censuses and Kentucky birth and marriage records, seven Guytons have been identified whose ages and matches with the earlier census returns make it highly likely that they are children of Samuel and Rebecca Guyton. In order of estimated dates of birth, these are Nancy Guyton (born 1792), Leah Guyton (born c 1797), Henry Guyton (born c 1798), Mary Polly Guyton (born c 1800), Cordelia Guyton (born c 1805), Celia Guyton (born c 1813) and Joseph B Guyton (born c 1815). The marriage of a Daniel Austin and Celia Geyton on 11 October 1838 in Oldham County, Kentucky, gives her father's name as Samuel Geyton who is almost certainly the same person as Samuel Guyton. Of the seven presumed children, this is the only one where the link is reasonably explicit.

If you are interested and would like to give me your e-mail address, I can also supply information on the ancestry of Benjamin Guyton (1771 - 1776) going back a further three generations to a John Gyton born c 1605 who was a reeder (a thatcher using reeds) in Norwich, England, and his wife, Margaret.

I'm afraid I can't identify the person from this description. However, as part of a GUYTON one-name study, I probably have his name and family connections in my database if you can offer any more details to help with identification.

The reason I posted the message is that I have come across a postcard of 'Cook Guyton 1st cook' in army uniform. I believe the previous owner of the card had been an officer in Gibraltar, although I now think it is WW1 not WW2, and that Cook Guyton was one of his men. So I suspect Cook Guyton was born ca 1890. I am happy to reunite card with the family if the cook can be identified with a reasonable amount of accuracy. I have tried to identify the regiment with no success. I also have a PC of Cook Evans 2nd cook who will be impossible to trace if I don't know the regiment - that is why I tried Guyton first as it is a much less common name. If you send your email address I can email you a scan of the card.

I enjoyed seeing your information on the Turner family. I would like to point out one error in your information. My wife is a Turner and you have a Della Turner married to Charles Bock listed as the daughter of Ira Miles Turner. The Della who was married to Charles (Charlie) was really Mildred Adela Turner, daughter of Floyd Turner (real name Victor Floyd Turner), nephew of Ira Miles Turner. Floyd's father was William Asbury Turner. Floyd was also my wife's grandfather. If you want to see more info, check out my listing on Rootsweb or Gencircles. It is under the title Rose/McGrew/Turner/Klaenhammer.
