My sister wrote a book in 2004 about the Gwartneys of Louisiana. Samuel, Michael & william owned steamboats. Her book listed all the names of the boats. If you would like more info, please contact me.

Ginger Gwartney Wriborg
Orlando,Fl
iluvclint@bellsouth.net
I know it has been years, but I am just now finding this connection. I am related to Micajah Gwartney & Elizabeth McGuffey. They had 10 children. I am descended from Anthony & Olive( Haywood), George Marchal & Elizabeth june (Durand), George Anthony & Marie Elizabeth (Mauny),William Marshal & Sallie Amanda (King),& my parents, Willie & Martina (Zerr). William Gwartney (1783) was Anthony's brother. So we are related in that way. There were a couple more Williams down the line. I hope this helps you. Let me know.

Thanks,
Ginger Gwartney Wriborg
iluvclint@bellsouth.net
Hello Ida:

I'm not sure if you were addressing this question to the person who has a book or to me regarding the Sidwell book . . .

There is a book with the title "OUR HERITAGE FROM THE GWARTNEY'S OF INDIANA". The author is Rebecca Ellen Gwartney Sidwell and the Publishing date was 1922. I've not found a copy yet and I'm not sure which book dgwartney was given.

There was a website that included a good deal of the Gwartney family history (jonesworld.org) but someone did something that created a problem and he had to take it down. It's disturbing because in order to access the site the person had to be a Gwartney descendant and was given a password, etc. Hopefully it will be restored some day.

I was sent a 40+ page family descendancy record by another "cousin" who lives in KS and will gladly share any information I have with you as well.

How are you connected to the Gwartney's and do you need help?

Leslie (AZ)

Hello again:

Perhaps the woman's name was Sidwell? There is a book written by a woman with the surname of Sidwell . . . Did you buy the book from her? I've been trying to find one of these books for several years now or even have one to copy but you're the first person I know who actually HAS one of these books.

A "cousin" who lives in KS sent me a 40+ page family outline of the Gwartney's and my father, LEONARD EVERETT GWARTNEY, is included in the descendancy but it did not include any of his wives or children. I believe I'm his only child. If you wouldn't mind, could you look up my father and his parents, HENRY COLVIN GWARTNEY and NAN WELLCH? My father's date of birth was 6/17/1912 - Canada and his date of death was 12/27/1985 - CO.

I'd also like more information about the original/first Micajah.

The Gwartney family repeatedly used the same names, over and over again, so if you wouldn't mind, could you also tell me the dates that apply in relation to your Gwartney family members so I can identify them more easily.

You said you moved to CA in 1940, therefore I'm assuming you're probably somewhat in my same age group. I was born in Los Angeles, CA in 1935 and lived in that area most of my life while growing up.

I've heard the GWARTNEY name is Welsh, but have never been able to confirm this . . .

Looking forward to hearing from you again soon.

Leslie (AZ)

Id' be very interested in your exact lineage and in what state you now call "home".

Years after his death, I found that my biological father, Leonard Everett Gwartney, died in Co and is buried there. I also discovered a couple of other wives he'd accumulated before his death.

I've never seen a photo of my father or grandparents and probably never will.

What book is it that you have on the Gwartney's?

Did you also know there is a website that includes a number of the Gwartney family?

Looking forward to hearing from you again.

Leslie (AZ)

My paternal grandfather, Henry "Hank" Colvin GWARTNEY was born in Winchester, KS on 5/25/1882. He died on 12/31/1930 in Douglas, WY. Between those events he was married twice. His first spouse was Nan Welch with whom he had three sons, one died in infancy. The marriage ended in divorce. Hank and his two sons moved to WY where Gwartney met and married his second wife, a widow, Lillie Fields, who already had four young daughters. Hank and Lillie produced four more children before Hank's death in 1930.

If you are a descendant of Henry Colvin Gwartney, I'd very much like to hear from you!!!!

Hi Don:

It's been quite awhile since I've communicated with you but I've made some headway in finding data relating to our grandfather's second family (including the children) via his wife, Lillie. Henry C even had a 3rd wife, I just learned yesterday. If you contact me with your current e-mail address I'll give you access to my Ancestry tree so you can see for yourself at your leisure.

Recently I found a third wife for my father, Leonard. The second was Mavis and the third was Bernice. I also learned that my father was buried in a paupers section of a cemetery in CO. Possibly he had no surviving "relative".

Included in the tree is a photo of Mary Jane Welch, who was the older sister of our grandmother, Nan Welch. Although our grandmother was married multiple times, she had no other children than those by Henry C Gwartney.

Hope to hear from you again.

Leslie

Hello again! Glad I was able to locate you after all this time as most of the "contact" E-mail addresses are no longer valid. You should be sure to visit http://www.jonesworld.com to search the GWARTNEY surname. Many photos at this site too!!! It's taken me years to locate my dad's 2nd wife but I found he married Irma Whipple in CO (no date). Leonard "Lynn" Everett GWARTNEY (son of Henry Calvin GWARTNEY) was her 5th husband! My 1st cousin, Donald Everett GWARTNEY(I've lost track of him now), said my dad had another daughter but I haven't any "proof" as yet. Irma's history included only one child born to 1st husband that died at birth. No recent info except she died in Las Vegas, NV in 1982. My dad passed away in Dec. 1985 in CO. He was buried in the paupers section of a local cemetery and his burial was paid for by the county. He shared a PO Box address with a "daugher" but the name given was Joe C. Jenkins. I've tried writing to Gwartney's in CO but have found none with knowlledge of my father. Also still trying to tied down the origin of the GWARTNEY name. Possibles narrowed down to Wales, Scotland and Ireland but nothing concrete. Your documented "tree" seems to be far more extensive and expanded than mine but I've met a lot of helpful people along the way who've been gracious enough to "share". I'll gladly do likewise. What is your direct E-mail address now?

Hi Leslie,

Great to hear you've made a lot of progress. I'm still adding to my database. It says I have more than 3700 individuals in it now - not all Gwartneys, of course! Last May I made a trip back to Leavenworth and photographed Evergreen Cemetery where a lot of the Gwartney pioneers are buried including my gr-gr-grandparents. I'd love to see anything you'd like to share. -Pauline

Hi Jamie,

My branch is Thomas Orlando & Gilla Colvin
Brandenburg Gwartney who were in Kansas
Territory by 1855 where my gr-grandfather,
(Robert) Emmet was born in 1859. I have "Micajah
Gwartney of Virginia and His Descendants" by
Frieda Sims Nelson, 1979 which I wish I had in
front of me right now. Do you have the
Sidwell book, "Our Heritage from the Gwartneys
of Indiana" (hope I've got the title correct)?
I believe there is another publication but the
name doesn't come to mind at the moment.

I don't know of any involvement of my Gwartneys
in the Civil War but they MAY have been effected
by Quantrill and his raiders in eastern Kansas.

Would love to compare notes - please e-mail me.

Pauline
pdrobny@mail.uccs.edu

Pauline - Thank you for your response.

Here is what I know about my Susan. Born 1 Jan 1805 in Hardin, KY, the daughter of Micajah GWARTNEY/Elizabeth unknown, married 12 Apr 1827 to Thomas WRIGHT, in Webster Twp, Harrison, IN and she died 11 Mar 1885 in Butler, KY. They had three children (of which I know). Thomas WRIGHT died about 1839-1840(maybe a bit later but not sure) because husband is not listed at marriage of daughter in 1842. Susan remarried 26 Feb 1847 to William May BRUCE.

My Thomas WRIGHT B abt 1805, is supposedly the son of Robert WRIGHT/Ginnet(Jane)CATHCART.

If you can shed any light on these folks it would be most appreciated.

Thank you.
Maureen Martello

Sheila:

Yes, I'd very much like to have the information regarding the children of Julia.

As for the age of Elizabeth when Julia was born, only two years earlier in 1801 it shows she gave birth to Rebecca????

In researching ancestors during the early to mid 1800's I was also quite surprised at the number of people who could not read or write. So this also brings into question who wrote in the information into the family bible. Family, friend, descendant years later?

An example is that a friend of mine in MN has a family bible that was filled in about fifteen or twenty years after the couple had been married and had children (who were now adults) by another family member all those years later because the couple, from Ireland, was illiterate. There was nothing shameful about this, it's just the way things were in those days. Education took a back seat over earning a sparse living.

Hope you're able to resolve this someday. Do you know of any cemetery records for Micajah, Elizabeth, Julia etc?

Good hearing from you.

Leslie (AZ)

Sheila:

The 80+ page family history that I received from another Gwartney descendant who lives in KS has the following information:

MICAJAH GWARTNEY(b. 1750 d. 1818) was married to ELIZBETH (no surname given) in VA. The couple had 9 known children born between the years 1775/VA and 1801/?.

The only JULIA in this early part of the GWARTNEY history was JULIA ANN GWARTNEY b. 1803 who was the child/daughter of JOHN GWARTNEY, who was the first child of Micajah and Elizabeth in 1775 and LUCY BOWEN. JOHN & LUCY had 6 known children. There are a lot of question marks regarding Julia's place of birth or date of death.

JULIA ANN GWARTNEY was married to JACOB ROLL on 5/3/1823 and the couple had one known child - WILLIAM TAYLOR ROLL b. 11/11/1830/IN d. 10/1904/KS. WILLIAM m. AMERICA HOOTEN.

JULIA ANN GWARTNEY married WILLIAM MCMEHEN on 4/30/1839.

My personal GWARTNEY ancestor is HENRY CALVIN GWARTNEY b. 5/25/1882/KS d. 10/31/1930/WY who was the 6th of 8 children of EPHRAIM GWARTNEY and MARTHA EHART.

Many of the notes in the documentation I have were made or referenced by Rebecca Sidwell from her publication "Our Heritage From the Gwartney's of Indiana" 1980.

The only "link" between Julia Ann and Julia Elima seems to be the year of birth and the husband, Jacob Roll. My information does not include any source documentation unfortunately. The differences would be the parents and the second husband perhaps? Two possibilities exist: there were two Julia's born in the same year and the information hads been "merged" over the years or it's one person that's been recorded incorrectly. I have no idea how this will ever be figured out . . .

This is the reason I posted a message asking for possible grave marker information. If you can ever sort this out, I'd appreciate your letting me know.

Wish I could have been of more help.

Leslie (AZ)

Ephraim G. Gwartney, b. 1791, Virginia, United States
2. John Gwartney, b. 1775, Mecklenburg County, Virginia, United States
3. William G Gwartney, b. 22 Dec 1783, Virginia, United States
4. Thomas Gwartney, b. 2 Nov 1789
5. Anthony Gwartney, b. 1790
6. Male Gwartney, b. 1793
7. Polly Gwartney, b. 1794, Kentucky, United States
8. Sarah Gwartney
9. Rebecca Gwartney, b. 1801

Also possibly another daughter Julia E Gwartney, b. 1802 VA who in 1823 married Jacob Roll.

I saw no Susan listed in this particular tree but I did find a Susan b. 1808 by one of the RootsWeb contributers.

Recently received an inquiry via Ancestry from a fellow in KS who is researching his ancestor, Julia.

Leslie (AZ)

Am researching MICAJAH GWARTNEY who was born in VA in 1750 and died in Harrison Co., IN in 1818 (Aug or Nov). His wife was Elizabeth McGuffy/McGuffey and they had the following children:

1. Ephraim G. Gwartney, b. 1791, Virginia, United States
2. Sarah Gwartney
9. Rebecca Gwartney, b. 1801

Also possibly another daughter Julia E Gwartney, b. 1802 VA who in 1823 married Jacob Roll.

Is there any known cemetery in Harrison County where Micajah and Elizabeth Gwartney were laid to rest?
ORIGIN OF THE GWARTNEY NAME

Without much success I've been trying to pin down the origin of the Gwartney name. It has narrowed down to either Ireland or Wales. Has anyone been able to verify the Gwartney roots yet? I've heard the name is possibly identified with Gwaltney and with Gartney . . .
Am also still looking for information regarding the second wife of my father Leonard Everett Gwartney (son of Henry Calvin Gwartney and Nan Welch) who died in CO in 1985.

Arley's daughter, Nancy, that you mentioned died shortly after birth. I probably have the date somewhere. I am the "other Nancy" born to Frances (daughter of Arley). I have just started doing a little research on my family tree and came across this posting.

Leslie have you gotten a reply to your Gwartney research. I two am researching Micajah Gwartney and Elizabeth McGuffey. I do belive (according to an insert in a bible) that they were the parents of Julia Elima who married Jacob Roll. If you have any further info on them, please reply. Shelia

Leslie, thanks for your reply. Yes this is confusing. I saw a copy of pages from a 'Roll' family bible I believe it was Roll, that listed Julia Elima Gwartney wife of Jacob Roll (that much I am sure of) as daughter of Elizabeth McGuffy and Micajah. However the dates seem off as Elizabeth would have been 52 when Julia was born (Julia I have also seen as Juliana Elima which could answer for the Julia Ann instead of Julia Elima). Some say Jacob's wife Julia was daughter of John and I also show Micajah's son Thomas with a Julia Ann. Just checking to see if anyone out there had a definite answer to the question. I'd rather show her as Micajah and Elizabeth's daughter and miss a generation than to have a generation and all the ancestgors of that wife added that don't necessarily belong. So for now, I guess I will leave Julia under Micajah as I have no record that she remarried anyone other than Jacob Roll. Thanks, Shelia - I have info for Jacob Roll and all their children, seven in all including William Taylor who married America Hooten of you need or want it. Shelia

Hi Tara, it has been a long long time. We had communicated several years ago on the Roll line, seems we are cousins and too far away either. If you recall, Im in Plattsburg, MO, but seeing this message and some of your others makes me contact you again. I see you are looking for Miami Station and Carrollton MO contacts too. (how interesting, that's where my husband is from). If I recall correctly, you had little ones at home but should be old enough now to get together. At least email me or call (falconflite@earthlink.net) I'll give my my number then.

What do you show on Micajah Gwartney (interesting enouhht you are the only other person to show his wife' as Elizabeth MGruffy (makes me wonder if you got that from me) Don't know where I got that info but can't find it anywhere else. Lets talk, Shelia
