GWINN, GWIN, Family - DNA Project (16 months later)

(updated: 16 Nov 2012)

We began our GUIN,GWIN,GUYN,GWYN DNA Project and variant surnames on 11 Jul 2011. Shortly after this, (Oct 2011) we expanded the project as "1st official combined project" to include the surnames related to CUIN-O'CUINN-McCUINN, GINN-GUINNESS, GOEN-GOINS, McGINNIS-McGUINNESS, QUIN-QUINN, and WINN-WYNNE and their related surnames as a supplement to traditional genealogical research. Also, we suspect similar origins between several of these groups going back 2000 years, which only DNA can prove. If your surname is a variant of the previously mentioned names, please consider joining our combined project as your Secondary or Primary choice. There is "No Limit" to the number of projects in which you can participate.

In our first year the GINN,GUIN,GWIN,GUYN,GWYN Project achieved 75 project members (now at 117), due to those which have already tested. We are encouraging new members to reach out and test their loved ones, during this period while prices at their lowest. We have many participants in all categories of Y-DNA testing, mtDNA testing and Autosomal DNA testing, but most likely do not have your specific branch going back to the early 1800's to confirm a positive match. (see current Holiday Sales Promotion)

With the help of several administrators who have many years of genealogical experience and fellow project members, our accomplishments have included resolving discrepancies with many family trees found on other web sites. We have privately assisted with several adoption cases and solved several non-paternal events (NPE). But mostly, we have been able to correctly displayed the genetic proof of genealogical connections to several branches of specific families for your interpretation. With our current members and knowledge of DNA results from other sources, we have also confirmed in three areas of the DNA spectrum that there is a very close DNA association between several COEN-COYNE, QUIN-GUINN, and GUINN-GWINN families, and several O'QUINN and O'GUIN families. Those particular circumstances might not apply to your specific families, but there may be other possible combinations of "very close associations" which we hope to discover.

We do not have all the answers, but our ongoing efforts will continue for many years as we learn about your particular families DNA origins and the ability compare matches for proper grouping, in a timely manner. We will continue to explore family connections for future participation.

(a.) our Background Page: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/GuinnGwinn/default.aspx
(b.) our Y-DNA Participants: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/GuinnGwinn/default.aspx?...
(c.) our mtDNA Participants: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/GuinnGwinn/default.aspx?...
(d.) our Autosomal Participants: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/GuinnGwinn/default.aspx?...
**** Please note that our project is only "one" out of 7,000 more projects currently established with FTDNA.

Sincerely,
Michael A. Gwinn (ret.
Melson+Gwinn

I'm looking for a connection between the Melson and Gwinn (or Guinn) lines which would have taken place, probably, between 1760-70 +/-, would have involved the marriage of a Gwinn daughter to a Melson, possibly John, who might have been of German or central European origin. A child of this hypothetical marriage was James Gwinn (Guinn) Melson, born sometime between 1771-80, place unknown, died ca 1839, Pike County, AR, known to have resided in MS Territory between 1802-1813 before settling in SW Arkansas.

Anybody here have anything that looks like this? James Melson is my 3ggpa and represents THE brickwall in my paternal line genealogy. Unfortunately, nothing is known of his origins, parents or possible siblings. Family legend is "nice" but unreliable.

Thanks for any response.

Bob Melson
The father of Elizabeth Lockridge 1750?-1832, wife of Samual Gwinn Sr 1745-1839, was James Lockridge 1695-1765. James Lockridge was born in Northern Ireland. His wife Isabella Kinkead's(Kincaid)1704-1771 father David Kinkead(Kincaid)1680-1779 was born in Scotland. Samual Gwinn Sr's father Robert Gwinn 1717-1785 was born in Orange County Wales as well as his Grand father Robert Gwinn born in 1694 and his Great Grand Father Edward Gwinn born in 1665.

I am doing research on another branch of the Gwinn Family. I agree that Elizabeth Lockridge, the daughter of James Lockridge 1695-1765 and Isbella Kinkead(Kincaid)1704-1765 and the grand daughter of David Kinkead (Kincaid)1680-1779 [He might have changed the spelling of his last name due to his problems in Scotland] and Winnifred Hobson 1688-1787, would have to been born in 1750 in order to have Ephriam J Gwinn in 1799. This means that she would have been thirteen when she married Graham, not unheard of during that time.

Tim, I think we may be cousins. My grandfather was Joseph Henry Gwinn and my grandmother Verna Mae ( Wheeler, from Meridian, Mississippi) Gwinn, both whom lived on the east side of Indianapolis. My dad is Joseph Henry Gwinn Jr., and my oldest brother Joseph Henry Gwinn III. Grandma and grandpa Gwinn originally had 13 children of which only nine survived. Your dad must have been my dad's brothers, correct??? Drop me a note if you think this information is true. John Dennis Gwinn (formerly of the westside of Indianapolis; specifically Saint Michaels Parrish)

The info you have for the wife and 3 children of Harvey Spencer Gwinn is incorrect. His wife was Ida Strickler. I made a reply to someone's post earlier so I hope you find it. Sorry, I'm not familiar with how this site works. If you need additional info on Harvey and Ida email me at Gwynned@aol.com. My husband said he only met your grandfather, Mark Dewitt Gwinn, once. My husband said he was a small boy of 5 or 6 years when he and his parents visited Mark and Della.

My husband is Gordon Gwinn. He is 79 years old and remembers the children of his grandparents, Harvey Gwinn and Ida Strickler, because they were his aunts and uncles. The only one he doesn't remember well is Mark Dewitt. The others were visited often. Charles, Stanley and Mary Alice were still living when we married in 1952 so I knew them too. And I met a lot of my husband's cousins over the years.

Child #1, Viola Virginia b. 1878 was called Aunt Otie. Ward b. 1880 d. in 1881. Then there was Estella b. 1883, Mark Dewitt b. 1885, Charles b 1889, Stanly b. 1891, Willis b. 1898 (my husband's father) Alletia b 1897, Mary Alice b. 1903 or 1909.

Harvy & Ida were married Jan 17, 1878 at the Old Courthouse in Luray W. Va by Rev. Watson. We have pictures of them. If there was a first marriage for either of them I never found it in my research. Wanita Gwinn

Linda---The 1900 census shows that Harvey Spencer Gwinn married Ida Strickler in 1878. Are you sure he had a first wife? Even so, the 3 children you name are way too late for that.

Hi Linda--looks like you have your Samuel's mixed up a bit in your message. Here is your line:

Robert Gwin, Sr. (1715c-1790c) probably born in Northern Ireland. Settled on the Great River of the Calfpasture prior to 1744.

Samuel Gwinn, Sr. (1751c-1839) married Elizabeth Lockridge Graham, widow of Robert Graham. By the way, I believe that the dating is messed up for Elizabeth; I think she was born closer to 1750, but that is another story. Their son was:

Andrew Gwinn (1788-1863) who married Mary Newsome (1794-1866). Their son was:

Samuel D. Gwinn (1818-1873) who married Lucy Jane Burdette (1824-?) Their son was:

Harvey Spencer Gwinn, your Great-Grandfather.

My name is Linda Schnell and I am looking for information on the children of Samuel Gwinn 1818-1873 & Elizabeth Lockridge (Graham) 1740-1832. He was her second husband and my records show they were both born in Virginia. He was my 4 Great Grandfather. Also info on My Great Grandfather's 1st wife. His name was Harvey Spencer Gwinn 1854-1918 and her first name was Lucalle. I believe she was born abt. 1867 in Indiana and died in Jefferson,Kosciuski, Indiana abt. 1920. Maiden name not known, but I believe they had 3 sons. Harl C. Gwinn Born 1891, Glen W. Gwinn Born 1903, and H.T. Gwinn born 1907. H.S. then married Ida Alice Strickler 1858-1910 on 17 Jan, 1878. They were the parents of my grandfather, Mark DeWitt Gwinn.

Hello Beckie--I have not corresponded with you for quite a few years. I just saw your message below from 2007. I would like to have access to your private files.

You may be interested to know that I recently took a 67 marker Y-DNA test and it was positive for R-M222 (Northwest Irish Modal Haploytype). My results matched two other distant Gwinn cousins--one descended through Samuel Jr. son of Samuel Sr. the pioneer and one descended through Breckinridge son of "Squire John" Gwinn. This indicates that the family is of Irish origin and not of Welsh origin. Possibly the family was originally O'Cuinns of the Cenel Eoghain.

On the Jackson, Alabama census of 1850 a Henderson Guinn and William Guinn lived nearby. I wonder if they were brothers. I would appreciate any information on these people.

Gwinn/Sumner & Humphrey Cos. TN

I am searching for an Unknown Gwinn who married James Gilmore Walker. Her brother William Gwinn was in White Co. AR in 1850s and beyond. In 1880 his niece, Angaline Walker, was living with him after his wife died, obstensively to take care of the children, for Angaline never married. James Gilmore Walker is in White Co. AR in 1850 with three children born in Arkansas, but no wife, so I am assuming she died at the time or soon after her last child, George, was born. George was born in 1848 and I have been unable to trace him. I would appreciate ANY help on these Gwinns. Thank you, E. Walker Myer

I'm pretty sure my mother, Janet Gwinn Robbins of Indianapolis, daughter of Joseph Henry Gwinn, has mentioned Emmitt Gwinn as being a brother to her father. They are children of Will Henry Gwinn and Martha Adkins Gwinn of Burkesville, Kentucky. Mom mentioned the family reunions that once took place in New Castle. I know this is an old post, but you can contact me at Rural70 at a o l . c o m.
Dave Robbins

Eliza Gwinn b. circa 1812 Philadelphia area married Samuel Gilbert

I'm looking for information on an Eliza Gwinn who married Samuel Gilbert in the Philadelphia area in about 1830. She supposedly had 4 children, 2 of whom died as infants. She likely died before 1840. Was she from the William Gwinn family of Philadelphia where I see the name Eliza running rampant? Looking for good sources, including a good source of the marriage to Samuel Gilbert.

Thanks.
