RBordua,

Yea, I've been doing some searching and came up with the same info that you have. The switch between Hoff and Haaf is certainly understandable.

If all the John Hoff families are one-and-the-same, Elizabeth had 10 children (assuming John V is one of them). Still possible due to early deaths and the dates of all 10 children do seem to line-up. I tried Ancestry.com with the names of the children and came-up with nil which is, again, understandable with the girls and might suggest early deaths of the boys (Valentine and Phillip, 1860, Lancaster).

1870 Census (Marilla) lists John Hoff from Baden, Elizabeth from Bayern, presently Bavaria. My guess: they probably met and married in the USA. My earlier message was incorrect when I stated that most in Baden were Catholic. I meant to say that Bavaria tended to be more Catholic but things still seem to hold true with JV's grand daughter being RC. Religious preference, in my mind, is often passed down through the mother.

Check out 1850 Census for NYC, Ward 6: John & Elizabeth Hoff with sons Henry (b. 1848 NY) and John (b. 1849 NY. Birth dates for John, Sr and Elizabeth are off by 3 years but still a possibility.

Do you know what the "V" stands for? Possibly a clue.

Do you know this JV Haaf ? b. 12-31-1938, d. 9-15-1992 MN.
(see Ancestry SSI index).

I have some info on Haaf immigration dates into the US. This John, AKA Johann, doesn't seem to be on my info but my stuff may not be early enough.

A final note: a lot of Haafs presently live in Lancaster NY. Try picking up the phone, introduce yourself and cousin Laura and see what happens. Some of the most fun of genealogy, in my experience.
Good luck. James (not Sally) Haaf.

I've found this family in the census although so far I haven't been able to find John V. Haaf with them.

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?ti=0&indiv=tr...
John Hoff
1860, Lancaster Vil., Erie County, NY

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?ti=0&indiv=tr...
John Hoff
1825, Germany
1860, Lancaster, Erie, New York

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?ti=0&indiv=tr...
John Hoff
1825, Baden
1870, Marilla, Erie, New York

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1880usfedcen&a...
John Haaf
1824, Baden
1880, Marilla, Erie, New York

There is room for my John V. Haaf in this family tree as he was born Nov. 9, 1851 in Lancaster. But I wonder why I cannot find him there in the 1860 census when he would have been 9 years old. Would he already have been working or living with another family at so young an age?

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

This Elizabeth Haaf Heydman is the daughter of my John V. Haaf.

Here is the obit I found for Elizabeth's namesake, her grandmother and the mother of John V. Haaf:

"The funeral services of Mrs. Elizabeth Haaf occurred this morning at Clear Lake, from the Catholic church. The death occurred Thursday evening, of paralysis. She leaves seven children, who are all grown, one of whom John Haaf, lives at Clear Lake. The others all reside in New York. She was 74 years old at the time of her death."

She died July 14, 1898.

I have connections with this family, particularly Magdalena Ottila Haaf (25.Aug.1881-12.Jul.1934) [your "Lorna O. Haaf"], John and Katherine Kaufmann Haaf's eldest daughter. Her daughter Louise, who is in her early 90s, is my dear cousin and friend.

My previous reply was sent prematurely.
Further:
If that John Haaf (1849-1943)is your John V. Haaf, b. Lancaster NY he might fit into this family shown 1880 US Census in Marilla Erie NY (about 1 mile from Lancaster)

John Haaf, b. 1824 Baden
+ Libbie (possibly short for Elizabeth), b. 1827 Baden
dau Minnie, b. 1868 NY

John V and other sibs might have fit-in before Minnie.
Also, the obituary of Elizabeth Haaf Heydman mentions her being Catholic. Haafs from Baden (and probably others) tended to be Catholic rather than Lutheran.

I'd love to hear what you discover.

Does anyone have information on the parentage of John V. Haaf (1850-1943) b: Lancaster, Erie, NY d: Sherburne Co., MN? I know his mother's name was Elizabeth (1824-1898) d: Clear Lake, Sherburne, MN but no idea of mother's surname or who his father was. Elizabeth Haaf's obituary mentions 7 grown children, of whom John was one, but the other six lived in NY.

Any help much appreciated.

Lothar Haaf

I don't know if there's a connection or not. I met Lothar and his family last year while they were vacationing here in Iowa. I'll pass along what I can figure out in his address. The script (handwriting style)is difficult to read.: Lotha(r) Haaf, BaCaa Bauie, J(?) Y(?)oana Baier, Hauiptsht(?)23,D-69483 Wald-Michelbach,Germany I got the letter last spring and replied, but it was returned to me because I didn't have the address right. I don't know too much about how to find someone on the internet. Maybe you can help me get in touch with him and find out some info. for yourself. He lives close to Hiedleburg, about 180 miles from the Italian/swiss border. There aren't many Haaf's living in the area. I was able to determine that much. Hope this helps us both. If you want to send me a phone #, I can call you and read you the letter and address. Maybe you can help me decipher it. Our phone # here is a/c 319-659-5077 or, cell # 319-343-4346. I have nationwide on the cell # so I can probably call you cheaper. Cliff Karen Sleeper

Haaf Family

Would this tie into the Jacob Haaf family in Germany, born 29 Sep 1862. Is it a matter of translation or is the document too faded or torn, etc.

Haaf family

Well, I would have to say your guess is as good as mine at this point... :)

I have not been able to determine when my Haaf's appeared in Akron/Summit County...I have been working other lines of research recently, and have not requested documents on these relatives yet or even traced them to census records...

All I know at this point is that my Conrad Haaf was born in 1842 and died in 1907 and is buried at St. Bernard's church in Akron, next to his wife Margaret Weidman Haaf, born 1845 in Cuyahoga County and died 1919 in Akron.

When I get to those census records, I hope to figure out when Conrad arrived in Summit County, and from there maybe determine his origins...

I will keep you in mind in case I uncover something useful...I work full time, go to school part time, and do research in between, so it may be a while before I find anything...

Happy hunting!

Haaf family - Ohio, USA

One of my ggrandfather Charles Haefele's brothers (Frederick)supposedly
settled in the Cleveland/Akron area. In the process of
researching this family, I learned that some
of the Haefeles considered Akron their original home - something
I never learned from the southern Indiana
Haefeles. (From notes my cousin took from conversations with my
grandmother, southern Indiana seemed to be my gggrandfather Georg Heinrich (Henry) HAEFELE's
first main stop around 1852-54.) I've learned that 3 children of another brother William (Gottlieb Wilhelm b. 1847)
moved to Akron, though one
moved back to northern IL (where they were raised), so
it makes sense to me that their were other
Haefeles in the Akron area. What's strange is
that I can not find the name in online documents for Summit county.
I find Hafele, Haefele, etc in Cuyahoga county,
but not Summit. My guess has been that they
changed the spelling somewhat. That's why I
am writing this message - wondering if there
is any kind of connection with the name Haaf.
Frederick Haefele was supposedly a Lutheran
minister somewhere in the Cleveland area. (conflicting
info on this). I have a huge picture of a family
that I assume is his. There are first names on
the back, but the main male is labeled "father"!
The southern Indiana Haefeles living today do not
seem to know these people or their names at all, though I have not
interviewed all of them yet.
The 3 children of William Haefele were Alfred, Pluma and Ruth (married
name I believe was Mercer). William's wife Annetta (Nettie)also lived
in Akron with Pluma after William's death. Both she and Pluma
died there in the 1930's and 40's.
If any of this is ringing a bell, let me know.
I'd be glad to send more info on the family.
Thanks
Jane Yeager
jjpedesk@earthlink.net
