He was the illegitimate son of a Sophie Gullicksen who was born in Frederickstaad, Norway and a sailor named Nielson from Arendal, Aust-Agder, Norway. He grew up in the home of Lars Haagensen and his wife Anne Pedersdatter. Lars and Anne had a natural daughter, Louise. My great grandfather took the name Haagensen when he left Norway in 1883 but lived in Milwaukee as a Hawkinson. His sons used the name Haagensen
