My Grandfather's father last name was Haak but it was changed incorrectly. It was really Adounini(means Poppy as in the flower) and they were from Lithuania. We had always thought it was Haakinini. But I was informed by a professor in Lithuania that there are no such letter as "H" in Lithuanian. It got misspelled and mispronounced or lost in translation when our folks came to Ellis Island. Haven't found out when they arrived in America. But my grandfather August Robert Haak was born around Thomas, WV. His brother Albert Matthew Haak was born in Fairmont, WV. I have my great Uncle Albert's discharge papers from WWI.They moved to Collinsville IL. area where my Mom was born along with her siblings. Interesting enough my Mom's brother was named Henry Haak. Thanks for any connection we might discover. The change in our supposed surname is a mystery. Mac

It's pretty clear that Joseph Jesse came from West Prussia with his wife Roselia (Rosa). I am pretty sure Rosa's family name is Blumke. The Jesse's claim to go back to King Jesse in the Bible, but I have no way to prove that, of course. There is a big Jesse festival every year in Stillwater, MN in the USA as that family really prospered there. They had so many children that they took over the town.

As to the Haak's, I think Stanislaus Haak came from Swierda in West Prussia. It seems that the Haak family and Jesse family had some connection in the mother country but I can't figure out the connection.

I am going to try the German message board you suggest.

Thanks again!

Guten Tag, Robert,

Thanks for your response. I am afraid that our Haak ancestors are not related since my oldest ancestor Michael Haak, born about 1810 where, and his wife Anna Justina Aschmutat were Evangelical Lutheran and so were their descendants.
They first lived in Klammer, Kreis Kulm, where their first 3 daughters were born, and later in Richnau, a village near Schönsee [Kowalewo], Kreis Briesen. Their only son Jacob* Julius, born 1845 in Richnau, is my greatgreatgrandfather. According to family lore he lived about 100 years, but nobody exactly knows when and where he died. After WWI wide parts of West Prussia were given to Poland, and that's why many Germans left because they did not want to live in a Polish state. So did my greatgrandmother Bertha* Louise Haak and their family.
Are you sure that your Jesse ancestors were from W. Prussia?
Maybe you will find some information in the forum of www.westpreussen.de Do not hesitate to put your query there in English since many Germans understand or speak English.
Regards from Deutschland,
Willi

My great-grandparents immigrated from West Prussia to the USA. I am not sure where they came from in West Prussia....I am trying to figure that out. They spoke German and were Catholic.

His name: Stanislaus Haak, born 1859
Her name: Bertha Jesse, born 1864

They married in the USA but both were from West Prussia according to old US census forms. Her parents were Joseph Jesse and Rosalie Jesse and they were also in the US. I know nothing about Stanislaus' parents.

They came to the state of Minnesota (abbreviated MN) around 1880.

My grandfather, their son Leo Haak, told me that the Haak name originally came from Norway but he had no way to support that claim other than what his family told him.

I am trying to figure out more about the parents of Stanislaus and Bertha in West Prussia.

Hope all is well in Germany!

My great grandmother, Olive Hawkenson was from his first marriage. If you would like more information on the Haakonsen/Hawkenson family, I will be glad to share. There are many more descendants of Even Haakonsen in Wisconsin.

My great-great Grandmother was Emmelia Haak of Robe, Germany who settled in Sangamon County. Since the "HAAK" name isn't that common, we're wondering if the two are some relation. My great-great grandmother was born 1833 and also married a Tessman, William Tessman.

Hi Elisa, The card in question I found was a Christmas postcard about an early 1900-1920 vintage. The postmake although not legiable on the date it does say Wis. It was wriiten to Hilda Hawkenson, Eleva, RT.4, Wis. It was from a Julia Voldsness also of Eleva Wis Rt. 4 Box 63. The card says:
Dear friend, I will send you a few lines and ask you if you and one of your sisters wants to wate(I am sure she meant waite) on the table at the Y. P. S. next time. Send me a card so I can know if your'll do it or not send it as soon as you can. With Love from Julia Voldsness.
This was probally sent instead of a phone call since not everyone had one back then. If this sounds like your family let me know.

Yes, there were Haak's who came from Holland. Take a look at www.afmp.nl/~heusden99/ to find most of their names.
I myself once hope to find track of the descendents of Isaak Haak, who must have married Maria Vasseur shortly after her arrival in 1883. Maria is a direct family member of me. As she was the first of her generation to immigrate to America she is a bit special to me. I am convinced that they lived in Newark, Wayne Co., NY in 1902 and have found that Isaac Haak still lived there in 1905. I am also convinced that it is them who are mentioned in the 1914 farm directory as living in Marion, Wayne, NY with a child younger than 21 years and a son Peter who must have been born before 1897. There may be more children though. I think I have got on a dead end here.

Now to your question:
During my search I am about certain that I have bumped into a Jacob Haak too who because of that must have lived in or around Wayne County, NY. Many Dutch, especially from Zeeland around 1900, seem to have gone to these surroundings.

Kindest regards, Agatha

Darla, I know we are related. My father Clarence had a brother named Hildor who passed away in 1992. Hildor lived in Plumas Co. Califorinia, town of Quincy. Hildor was born May 24, 1911 in S. Dakota and my father was born in La Crosse, Wis. Jan. 2 1901. I wasn't aware they spent any time in Minnesota nor have I ever known my grandparents first names. Their parents were from Norway where I don't know exactly, with the last name Haak. My grandmothers maiden name was Fienstead. My father always spelled our last name Hawkinson but Hildor always spelled his with an e. They also had another brother Norman? and a sister Viola, both have passed. This is very exciting for me as I have also been trying to do some research. Please e-mail me back because it seems we are cousins!
I am descended from the Johan George Hauk (later Haak, Haag, Hauch, Haugh etc) German immigrant to Pennsylvania in 1733. My line of descent is through his son Johan George Jr in Berks Co PA; His son George Michael; his son Jacob who wandered through Dauphin and Centre Counties and finally ended up in Jefferson County as HAUGH. Then down from Jacob through Benjamin, William and to my grandmother May Elizabeth Haugh born in 1886, Jefferson Co PA.

I have lots of Haugh info. I'll do free lookups in my recently published book "The Haugh FAmily...through the Pennsylvania Counties of Berks, Dauphin, Centre and Jefferson".

E-mail me your query to learn if you tie into this line or for info as to where you can obtain your own copy if you want. dickholben@earthlink.net
