Hi again! Here's what I have in my files on Evelyn and her parents (it's only bits and pieces, since Evelyn's father, William, was my grandpa's brother):

Sallie Z. HAAS, born 1871 in Hamburg, Berks, PA, to Levi and Mary HAAS (source: Berks Co., PA, Register of Wills and Records - Application for Marriage, Vol. 26, No. 694); married 07 Sept 1898 in Reading, Berks, PA, to William Isaac WIEST (same source); died 02 Nov 1918 in Reading, in the Influenza epidemic of 1918 (source: papers of Kathryn Wiest Ladd, William's sister).

William Isaac WIEST, born 14 Dec 1874 in Oley, Berks, PA, to Daniel Cletus and Kathryn (SNYDER) WIEST (source: Ladd papers); died 14 Nov 1902 in Reading, of typhoid fever (source: Ladd papers). Both Sallie and William are buried in the Charles Evans Cemetery in Reading (source: Charles Evans Cemetery records).

Sallie and William had 2 children: (1) Belford LeRoy WIEST (b 1900 - d 1903); buried with his parents in Reading; and (2) Evelyn Catherine WIEST. Evelyn was born 01 Feb 1902 in Reading, and died Jan 1969, in Pompano Beach, Broward, FL. Evelyn was married 30 May 1958 in Manatawny, Berks, PA, to Henry J. BOURQUIN (sources of info on Evelyn: Ladd papers; SSDI; marriage application and licence for Evelyn & Henry: Berks Co., PA, Register of Wills and Records, Vol. 205, Page 434). I do not know where Evelyn is buried...

You were correct in your original assumption - not in what you said in your last msg - about Evelyn being related to the HAAS family through her mother, NOT through her father. I'm unaware of any other WIEST/HAAS connection other than William and Sallie. Also, isn't it more likely the Levi HASS you mentioned (1827-1881) is Sallie's father, not her brother? If they were siblings, that would mean the brother was born in 1827, and the sister was born 44 yrs later! Yowza... Ha! I don't know the dates of birth and death of the Levi HAAS who was Sallie's father, but the dates of birth and death seem to fit pretty logically, don't they, to the dates you listed for your Levi.

Gosh, when I started out I was afraid I wouldn't be able to help you all that much, but I guess I DID have a few bits and pieces to share. By any chance, do you have any pictures of Evelyn? I don't - and neither do any of her 1st cousins on the WIEST side (I've borrowed and copied every picture I could get my hands on over the years; there are now only 3 1st cousins still living - William was one of 15 children - and all the remaining cousins are in their 90s.

Hope this helps! Take care - Dan

Hi, I am not related to these particular HAAS', but I read your post and it reminded me of someone I knew of from many years ago. There was a family 'joke', but it's really an endearment:
A certain young couple were married and the bride had a very young sister. Over the course of the couple's courtship, the little sister had developed a 'crush' on her sister's suitor, just as is typical of little girls. The family said that it was he who was her first true love.

Good luck to you.

I said earlier

<< The 1930 census lists her as living with a cousin in Reading [not Mary, who at this time was in Philadelphia].>>

not true - my grand parents had moved back to Reading, and
Evelyn was living then with Henry, Mary and Bruce Bourquin.

and in 1920 Reading , Evelyn is living with:

George and Mary Haas, 3 of their children: Carrie, Oscar and Esther

Henry J. Bourquin and Evelyn C Wiest were married 23 May 1958 in Pikeville, Berks, PA

Evelyn Bourquin born 1 Feb 1902 - died Jan 1969 Pompano Beach, Broward, FL 33063

It then looks like Evelyn's mother was a sister of Levi A Haas [06 NOV 1827-d 08 FEB 1881] , himself the father of George Zwoyer Haas [b 24 MAY 1862]

I found somewhere that Levi Haas was from Richmond Twp., Berks.
Do you know if this is right ?

I always thought that Evelyn was Mary's cousin on her mother's side. Thanks for pointing out it was on her father's side.

A weird [and inacurate] rumor has circulated in my family for many, many years:

that my grand father Henry had married Mary Haas, even though his true love had always been Evelyn.

.... Evelyn was 10 when my grand parents were married !!!!

Yes, please, I'd like to learn more facts.
Daniel Haas & Catherine of Alsace, Berks County, PA

Berks County Register of Wills, Written 1 JUN 1842, Filed 25 JUL 1845, Will of Daniel Haas, of Alsace Township:

Catharine, Wife & Executor

Cows, Hogs, all personal property, income from real estate, to beloved wife.

After death equally divided among my children:

John Haas
Daniel Christopher Seabold, son of my daughter Harriet Haas, who married John Seabold
Rebecca Haas
Caroline Haas
Angeline Haas
Elizabeth Haas
Sarah Haas

(Children are numbered 1-7)

Signed Daniel Haas

Witnesses: John Bernhard & Thos J. Weber [Affirmed witness, 25, JUL 1845]
Inventory List Taken 26 Jul 1845 by Witnesses, Sworn to 1 AUG 1845.
Household Stuff, 2 Cows, 2 Hogs Farm Tools, Books, Butcher’s tools…

NOTES: “Seabold” is probably “Seebold,” and possibly Daniel Christopher Seebold (12 Mar 1831-1916) said to be son of John Henry Seebold (14 JUN 1802-17 JUN 1897) of Union County, PA. His wife is said to be Henrietta R. Hess (22 MAR 1808-23 MAR 1831), married 9 FEB 1830. “Henrietta R. Hess Seebold” is buried Sharon Lutheran Church cemetery on South High Street in Selinsgrove, PA. According to various secondary online sources probably from Seebold genealogy book. Daniel C. Seebold lived in New Berlin, Union County, PA, then moved to Milton, Northumberland County, PA. Name in will is “Harriet” not “Henrietta,” however.

I am interested in information on children of this Daniel Haas. Also surname of wife Catharine. She may be second wife of Daniel, as he may the the Daniel Haas who married Esther Rothermel, 27 Oct 1797 Exeter Twp, Berks Co. PA Schwarzwald Reformed Church. None of this is proven.

From "The Sacramento Daily Record-Union",
Sacramento, Calif., dated June 13, 1888:

Dropped Dead
Coroner Clark was summoned yester-
day afternoon to the residence of Frank
Troi, about seven miles from Florin, to
hold an inquest upon Joseph Haas, an old
man 72 years of age. The old gentleman
was left at the house alone for a short time
and went out to sit on the porch, where he
was found dead. He was a native of Ger-
many, and was Mr. Troi's brother-in -law.
The Coroner did not deem it necessary to
hold an inquest, as it was evident that the
deceased died from old age and exhaustion.

From the website: http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov

David M.

Hello: I ran into a Bill Haas in Santee SC. As we were speaking, we found out that we were both from NJ and he asked me to look into the Nazareth Trade School for him. He is 89 years old now so it is possible this is not the William you are looking for, or perhaps he is a relative of some kind. I am sure he would love to hear from any relative. Please let me know how we can proceed together.

I am looking for relatives of the Haas family of Brooklyn. Mary was born in 1894, Anna 1903, and William ?.

They were in an orphanage in Farmingdale, NY, possibly St Rose IndustrialSchool for the girls and Nazareth Trade School for the boy, run by the Catholic church.

Mary Haas married Joseph Francis Morena and they are my grandparents, They raised their kids, Delia, Nicholas,
Catherine, Antoinette, and Philomena in Brooklyn. Delia passed away around 20 from tuberculosis.

Antoinette Morean married my father William Keller in Brooklyn, before moving to California in 1958.

Anna Haas married John Gordon and had 3 sons, they lived in Queens, NY

I know very little about William Haas.

Please contact me if you have any info at all about them.

Thanks,

Maryann
Can you share some of the information you have of the family up to Reuben? I would like to see if my Reuben Haas is the same as your Reuben Haas. I did some research on the last name of Haas and found that it was German. I also that there are also several spelling variations for that name. My research said that the spelling of HAAS was used by German Jews. I don't know if this is really the case here but it is interesting. My Reuben had a daughter named Mary who married John Snyder. They had a daughter named Myrtle Luella Snyder who married a man with the last name of Shewell. They had a son named Raymond Chester Shewell. Does this sound like the same family as your tree?

Hi, I just decided to look up some relatives and just discovered my cousin Dale Freyman from Florida is no longer living. I am the only living granddaughter-there were two of us- of John and Katie Minerva Haas. I live in Green Lane, Pa. My great grandfather so many times removed did fight in Revolutionary War. I have a veteran grave registration record. His name was Stophel Zuber. He was in the Berks County Militia, under a Capt .Abraham Keefer. My mother was Mildred Haas Breuninger. I was wondering if my cousin Junior (Earl Freyman) was still living. He and his wife lived in Orefield
