Very new to this however I did come across your post. My great grandmothers maiden name was Haba (which I just found out). She was born and raised in Greece and I always thought of her as Greek but after coming across the name I'm very curoius as to her origins.

Is there anything you can tell me about the surname that are aware of?

Thanks,
Aziz

I have Haba ancestors who came from Czech. Frantisek Haba was born in 1802. His daughter Rosalie was born in 1832 in Czech. I do not have any more information on the family Haba family other than Rosalie brought forward. The family goes back to a Pavel Haba born about 1677. Pavel's grandson,Jiri had many sons.

Deb -

Thanks for the info...I wonder if the families are linked. I know we had an Alexsander and Anna Habas (cousins of my grandmother) who visited in the 1960's from Poland (if you have any info on recent family). My great grandmother was Aniela Habas, who came from Odrowaz in the early 1900's (around 1910). Her mother's maiden name was Chraca (I think). I know that they all lived in the Nowy Targ region, and on census info they are sometimes listed as Polish/Austrian, from Galicia (confusing becuase of constant border changes!). If you can make a connection, please let me know!
Trish

My Grandmother, Helena Kluska, came from the Galicia part of Poland and married Stephen or Stanley Haba. Their first child, Mary Haba, was born in 1914 in Elizabeth N.J. We believe that Stanley (Stephen?born about 1894) had a brother Frank who owned a deli and or ice cream shop and had a son named Edward Haba. We believe that this was also in New Jersey. There is a picture of a Brother George too but we do not know if he is a Kluska or Haba. We have letters from Grandma's niece postmarked Zorawina 1963 & 1966 from Stanistawa Sapek off to be translated. Anyone with a link please e-mail.

Haba

Hi everyone,
I just am getting back to doing research and am sorry
I missed all these posts. First let me refresh everyone.
My Great-Grandmother was Anna (Annie) Marie HABA. She came
to the states about 1873 or 1874. I still have not found what ship or
where she entered the states.
In NE there is a precinct called Boehima,Saunders Co., NE. I
found a Joseph and Josephine HABA with children there. I thought
this could have been my line but there is some question about
this at this time. I found this on the 1880 census. Knowing a
little more about the genealogy research now this still could be
her father. Due to the fact that it is listed with children out of age
order, this family could have been his second marriage.
There is also a HABA family listed on the Dakota's 1880 census. They
are not however found on the Soundex. I believe this is for two reasons, one
that there may not have been any children 10 or under. Secondly, the pages that
list Annie, Frank and Joseph are so faint you cannot read them, atleast not at the
Seattle Archives. I thought I would write the court house and see if they would
have any information of what is on this page.
At this time I still know very litte about my HABA line. One family member
remembers is mother refering to Annie's mother's name as being Josephine but
another family member lists it as Petika?. I had a little contact with a woman in Ne
whose maiden name was HABA but she has not sent me much data on her line. She does not
have a computer and contact is all with snail mail.
I would love to see any info all of you have on the HABA line. Maybe all of us
working together can piece this family together.
Thanks to all of you for posting the information you have.
C J Marzullo

I sent for and rec'd SSI Application. This is what was on it.
Name Anna Marie
Born 10 Apr 1874 North Plat, NE
Father Joe Haba
Mother Josie Haba - Yes, sadly she did not give mother's maiden name.
She applied for the SS when she was 62, so that means place of birth could be remembered wrong as she forgot mother's maiden name to be written.
Basically no further than before. Other than I will ck now in North Platte, NE 1870 census when I get to the Archives.

Another Haba line

I descend from Jan Haba, born Chvalovice, Bohemia, Dec. 30, 1844. His line goes back to Vaclava Haby aka Wenzel Haba in the middle 1700's. Jan married Antonia Dvorak Feb.2, 1871, came to USA, NE w/wife and son James(Vaclav), 1874. First to Omaha, then to Rescue,NE where he farmed. Retired to Morse Bluff in 1912, died there Sept 21, 1930. Wife died Apr 13, 1931. Together they had endured the NE blizzards. Jan is written up in the book HISTORY OF CZECHS IN NEBRASKA wheree he took his oxen into their sod home to excape the storm. Other children besides James, were Joseph Haba, Mary Kaplan, all of Ne, and Barbara Machan, my grandmother of WI.
Joseph Josephine Haba mentioned by CJ Marzullo may be a nephew of Jan. Also a possible relative as they'd been visited by my Habas in NE,was Joseph Haba of 3206 S 43rd St, Omaha. He died July 22, 1953. Had wife Kathryn, sons George Burney of Ne 4 daughters. Also lists brother Frank of Perry OK. Frank wife Mary supposedly changed name to HABY. This Frank Joseph of Omaha had sister Barbara (Mrs. Frank Pospisal) of Roy, MT.. Source on Jan cas CZ archives in Prague family knowledge. Source for other Haba was cousin Helen Kaplan of NE newspaper clippings.

Haba/Haby

I got my Habas from the Prague Archives. They listed the earliest Haba in my line as Vaclav HABY. a Protestant tailor also known as Wenzel HABA. He married on Nov. 1,1791 in Chvalovice to Johany Kuklisove. He died there in Chvalovice on Sept. 21,1827. From what little I know, CZ reports were kept in either German, Bohemian or Latin. Wenzel Haba might be the German translation of Haby. Since I know Vaclav is CZ and Wenzel is the German. Probably not the Latin, as they were Protestant..
Vaclav Haby/Wenzel Haba's son Josefa Haby/Haba, a cottager and tailor was born July 23, 1803 in Chvalovice, married Frantisky Martinkovy in Chv. on Oct. 26, 1824. He died Dec. 5, 1880 there in Chvalovice.
Josefa's son Jan Haby/Haba was born Dec. 30, 1844/3 there in Chvalovice..(my great grandfather) married Antonie Dvorkove on Feb. 12, 1871. Jan died Sept.21, 1930 in Morse Bluff, NE. He was a "shoemaker and farmer from Tunochod of Ledec."

Thanks for the info! If your intested, the
some info about Haby's posted in the Haby message
board and a few other boards. I'll post you
when i find the list. Also. I would appear that
all the Haby's in Texas are decedants from the original
Haby settlers of French/German origins. Also
the Haby name as apparently morphed in to.
Habe, Hoby, and i think Habi and Hobby. The
name appears to be Scandinavian (Sweden
or Denmark) The "a" orininal had an
accent mark above like a tiny o. The a was
also pronounced "oo" I have found listing for
a listing for a Haby town in Sweden or Denmark
The sites were in English and I don't have my
note with me. Let's See what else. the Texas
Haby's all seem to be a fertile bunch, to
this day. the original Haby that settled in Texas
were known as the Fightin' Habys. The is also
the Abondoned Haby Settlement.
Well that's all I can Remember of the top of
my head. I have formed a theory that ALL,
the Habys are realated not to distantly. But
I have nothing solid to back it up yet,
If you would like to look further into the
Haby branch let me know, I think I can put you
in touch with someone who has complied at least
2000 Haby's and you two may be able to
find a way to connect the Texas Habys to the
Habas

They settled in St. Louis, Missouri. Mary was born in 1859, and died May 20, l921. Frank was born in ? and died March 12, l930. I have baptisimal certificate of Emilie.
Your ancestors are definitely European, as are mine. Our family goes back centuries, almost as far as the beginning of the Dark Ages. A whole lot of our distant relatives were royalty (dukes etc. )I happen to know this for a fact, yet am not at liberty to name the source. I am polish by birth, but live in Australia, where my mum and I decided to move.

I bid you farewell.

Should you require any additional information, feel free to question me.

birthplace of parents and grandparents

My father, Joseph Haba, came to the USA by boat at age 10 in 1910. Port of entry, I was told by an older brother, was Brooklyn. His parents were Paul and Marie Haba both born about 1873. I've always wanted to know where are they from, where were they born, when did they come to the USA, where did they settle. My father gor married to a Justine Knizner, and settled in Youngwood, Pennsylvania.

My father Joseph Haba came to the USA in 1910, as a 10 year old by boat. I believe his port of entry was Brooklyn. His parents were Paul and Marie, both born about 1873. Thats all I know about them. I would like to know where they were born, and in what country. What documents are available. They settled in Western Pennsylvania, with my father living in Youngwood, PA. When did my father become a US citizen.
