Not sure if this will help you but my father was Joseph Roach of Cheticamp. His Father John Roach married to Phyllis Hache they had five children Margaret(Doyle) New Waterford, Mary Boutlier Brantford ON, Lucien Roach, Henry (deceased 1930's. Phyllis was born October 2, 1889. Her brother Charlie Hache visited us when we went to Cheticamp in the early 1960's in his late 80's at that time. I remember friends or cousins not sure visiting us Luke Aucoin of Hamilton ON. I understand grew up with my dad. We don't know alot about our fathers ancestry either he may have been born around the same time as your father 1925.

Father Patrice Gallant's book on the Hache/Gallant family states that Michel Hache-Gallant's alledged father Pierre married a native Esquimo. I have seen some discussions that questions that claim.

My husband's Hache lines. where is the native ancestry?
I have a number of Hache /Gallant lines in my husbands Losier ancestry. Can someone please explain exactly who in that family was native. My husbands ancestry comes down from the sons of Michel Hache (1662 - 1737). Michel was the son of Pierre L'Arche.

There are various lines of descent from two of Michel's sons - Pierre and Charles.

Pierre Hache had 4 sons - Joseph, Fabien, Louis and Xavier.
They were all my husbands 4x gt grandfathers.

Louis Hache married Judith Hache in 1790, Shippagan, New Brunswick. Judith was his second cousin (being the great grand daughter of Michel's other son Charles Hache).

Louis and Judith had a son Sebastien. Sebastien was the 3x gt grandfather and his son Gustave Hache the 2nd gt grandfather. Gustave married Melanie Gionet. Their daughter Marie Hache married Ernest Jean - my husbands gt grandfather - in St Isidor, Gloucester County, NB in 1902. Their daughter Eliana Jean (aka Liona), married my husbands grandfather Ovide Losier in Kapuskasing Ontario in 1929.

As far as we can tell there is no native blood in this line. We all look caucasian. So where exactly is the native blood?

Going back to the 4x gt grandfathers - Fabien's son Andre Hache had a daughter named Francoise. Francois married Germain Noel and their daughter Marie Noel married my husbands gt grandfather Francois (Frank) Losier in 1896, St Isidor, Gloucester Country, NB.

And the last 4x gt grandfather was Joseph Hache. His son was David Andre Hache. David-Andre had 2 daughters, Marceline Hache and Seraphie Hache.
Marceline Hache's daughter Melanie Gionet, married the afore mentioned Gustave Hache.
Seraphie Hache's daughter Celina Gauvin (my 2x gt grandmother), married Gustave Duclos, and this line ends with my mother was born a Duclos and married a Losier.

I would love to know who the native person was who married onto the Hache family. Thank you.

Larry,

I think another original spelling is Hachey. Ben Hasha in Texas in his 1983 letter to me said the original spelling was Hachette. I have been researching the family since 1971.

Sincerely,

John L. I found the direct line from Michel Hache-Gallant down to maternal great grandmother and it was all listed in English on this website (Descendants of Michel-Hache-Gallant) Also the LIfe and Times of Michel-Hache Gallant was in English there as well. I think I found it under PEI lineage. Check it out.

I currently have a very small web page but I would like to make the data more permanent considering my age. Any suggestions? Ben

Hache/Gallant database

John Gallant who lived in Toronto died about 4 or 5 years ago. He had a project in his retirement to correspond with various Haché/Gallant decendants to capture their ancestry from Michel Haché. He had about 34,000 entires in his database at the time of his death.Unfortunagtely, in order to save disk space of his computer he did not enter any supporting notes of the source of his data. But he obtained the data from various decendants of Michael Haché which he entered into computer. He passed a copy of his database on to me prior to his death. I would like to try to update any data to this database.
Michel Haché dit Gallant... first of the line... was born in Acadia and baptised in Trois-Rivières 1668-04-24, in the marge it is written Michel sauvage... son of a "frenchman and a Eskimaude"... raised by Michel LeNeuf...

Name of his father is unknown... could be:

Michel Gallant... who's on the passenger list of the St-Jehan
Michel LeNeuf
A relative of Michel LeNeuf
A friend of the LeNeuf family
Pierre Larcher

His mother... could be a real Eskimos, since Eskimos were amongs the first native slaves in the French colonies... or she could be an Innu, one or some of their groups/tribes were also known as "Little Eskimos" at some point in the old days...

It is obvious by the way the baptism was written that the LeNeuf family knew who the parents were, but chose not to give names, probably to protect the identity of the father... obviously that child was not just dropped on their doorstep by total strangers... otherwise they would have never known the ethnicity of the parents and that part of the baptism is very specific...

Yes we do have a website and a databas... and I did offered to host the Hache-Galant database so it would be available to everyone, but never got an answer on that...

http://www.geninfo.org/ (database is in that section)
http://www.geninfo.org/metis/

Our database needs updating... many of the incomplete lines in there have been completed... and descendants have also been added... not sure yet when we will update it... but should be within a few months... maybe even sometime this summer...

Eskimos in the Maritimes and in the French colonies
Base on researches, I doubt the word "Eskimaude" in the baptism was an error...

Little facts usualy not research properly by those researching "French history" or "Family history":

- contacts between Natives of the Maritimes regions and the Eskimos had been going on for a very very long time

- numerous Natives of the Maritimes, when tested show typical Eskimo DNA marquers, same is also found in various Montagnais tribes, but often in a higher degree, by the way some of the Montagnais were often called "little Eskimos" in various old records

- the Eskimos were amongs the first Natives to be either sold or given as slave to the Frenchs by other Natives

- oral tradition amongs Natives of the Maritimes often include history of both or either Eskimo and Montagnais individuals somewhere in their ancestry

- I find it extremely doubtfull that Acadiens would not have known the difference between a Mikmak woman, mix-blood or not, and an Eskimo... the Acadiens were living and dealing with the Mikmaks on a daily bases...

- is it possible there was confusion between "Eskimo" and "little Eskimo"... it's possible, but have a relativaly low probability... as there were significant difference between the two... and contact between the Mikmak and the Montagnais (little Eskimos) should have been even more frequent at that time period, than contact with the Eskimos, with who most tribes were at war with at that time, which also explains why the Eskimos were amongs the first Native slaves in the French colonies... and why the Frenchs in general would also been aware of the differences between those groups...
