There are two Hacketts that I know of from Barrow in Furnace. One is Fredrick James Hackett born 1884 who died 21st May, 1918 in France. He was the son of Thomas/Sarah Hackett. I do not think he was married. The other is Thomas Hackett born 1875. He died in Barrow 1915. I don't know if he is the same Thomas that enlisted in the Lancaster Regiment.

The Hackett name came to Ireland in the 11th Century along with many other Norman names. Since the Normans also conquered England the name can be found there as well however the Hacketts arrived in Ireland at about the same time as they did England.

Walter is a fairly common name given to Hackett sons. We've traced mine to my great, great grandfather who came to the US in the early 1830s. He departed from Ennis but we've not been able to trace his line into Ireland beyond that.

Walter H. Hackett, III

Re: Origins of the surname Hackett

A bit late however my research shows, and someone has alluded to it, the name came from the Normans and has Norse origins. The "ett" ending to a name typically represents this source throughout Ireland and Great Britain. Further, the name was purportedly a title meaning "Chieftain" or similar before the Normans brought it to Ireland and elsewhere.

I'm a historical researcher who's writing a book and I'm interested in finding anything original out of the Hackett Family Shipyard in Amesbury MA. That's the one that operated during the revolutionary war and built ships for the Continental Congress and others. I'd like to know anyone in the family might have a clue if any correspondence, ships drawings, or other marine related items might still exist in Hackett Family archives somewhere? It seems there's a paucity of original documents and information out of the shipyard itself. I'm hoping that one of their descendants might have a trunk full of papers somewhere, and this was worth a shot. I'm at endocraft1@aol.com if this rings any bells to any of the Hackett Family.

Re: Looking for family ties to James Franlkin Hackett from Ireland who married Sarah Pettibone in Will county, Illinois

This document came into my hands Just reciently, within a week. Hope this helps.......

Although known as Albert, he possibly may have been Charles Albert, since the death of his son, Charles Albert, 1858-1936, states that his father was Charles Albert Pettibone. No other proof of his full name has been found, since there has been no birth, marriage or death certificates filed as far as has been learned. However, Loren and Sallie Pettibone gave their other children two names so it is quite possible that Albert also had two given names.

Albert's obituary, published in the first week of December, 1894, in the North English Record, states that he was born in Livingston County, New York. Since Livingston County was not formed until 1821 when Genesee County was divided, and since Albert was born December,1818, that statement is incorrect. Therefore, his birth place was Genesee County. In the 1820 federal census, Loren Pettibone and family are listed as living in Gainesville township, or town,in Genesee County, New York. That, then, may have been Albert's birthplace. In the 1830 federal census, the family is still there.

But by July, 1834, they were living in Chautauqua County, New York, on the westerm border of the state. This is where Loren and Sallie had their last child born. She was Sarah Jane Pettibone, born July 7, 1834. To date, they have not been identified in the 1840 census, so no concrete information is available on them for that period from 1834 to 1846. Albert's obituary states that the family moved to Will County, Illinois, in 1846. No town or city was mentioned.

In the 1850 census, Albert and Franklin, two sons of Loren and Sallie, were living with William Pettibone and his family in Orland township, Cook County, Illinois. Each man had his own farm which they were farming close by. Apparently they did not yet have houses on their property. It is noted that Franklin had just been married that summer, so he had a bride and her younger brother, Stephen Carter, living also with the William Pettibone family. It has not been determined what relationship existed between the William Pettibone family and the sons of Loren. William Pettibone was 60 years of age at the time and had been born in New York, so it is difficult to say what relationship there was.

In 1851, as my father, Charles Albert, said so many times, "his father who was English, stepped across the county line and married a pretty little Pennsylvania Dutch girl named Caroline Henniger." Her family was living in, or near, Frankfurt, Will County, Illinois, according to the 1850 federal census.

Albert Pettibone and his wife, Caroline, lived on the farm in Orland which at the time was 35 miles west of the center of down town Chicago. Now, I am told, Orland Park is a beautiful and large shopping center. Here, on that farm, they had six children, Helen, Clarissa, Eliza Jane, Edward, Charles Albert, and George. These were in the 1860 federal census which also shows Albert's mother, Sallie Lee Pettibone, living on the same farm but separte house. By that time, she was a widow, for Loren had died sometime after November 3, 1856, when their daughter, Sarah Jane, had married James Franklin Hackett.

It is not known where or what Loren was doing between 1846 and 1856. No listing in the 1850 census has been found which might indicate that he was on the move. Some feel that he had gone to Iowa to search for land. That is cerainly possible for for by 1860 Franklin and his family were listed in Fillmore township, Iowa County, Iowa, where Franklin was farming. It is entirely possible that Loren had located Iowa County and returned to Illinois telling his sons, Albert and Franklin, about the very fertile land there. In 1870, Albert and his family were located in Fillmore township also.

However, Albert and Caroline, with their six children listed above, moved to Cass County,Michigan sometime after 1860. In Cass County their seventh child, Cora Delia, was born. Why the family moved to Michigan is unknown, or could it have been that Caroline was visiting in Michigan when the baby was born? This, at the present time is unknown.

It is known, however, that by 1870, Albert and family were also living on a farm in Fillmore township, Iowa County, Iowa. The farm adjoined, or was across the road from Franklin's property. This was the birthplace of William Chester, known to the family as Kink, because of his curly hair. This, also, was the place where Caroline died in 1874/1875. She was buried at the country cemetery named Clothier's about two and a half miles out of the town of North English, Iowa County, Iowa.

After his wife's death, Albert was grief stricken. He had also lost his oldest son, Edward, to death. In his search to question, "Why", he met a younger lady named Catherine Ash, whom he later married and in the 1880 census we find they have a baby girl named Neva. Albert had left his family of motherless children on the home farm in Iowa County, while he moved to Keokuk County. Since nearly all the 1890 census reports were lost in a fire, it is not known by this writer where Albert, his new wife, Catherine, and daughter were in 1890.

In the meantime, Albert's eldest daughter, Helen, and by then his eldest son, Charles Albert, were left to run the farm and raise the younger children. That was quite a responsibility for a boy of eighteen. My father, Charles Albert, often said that he could not think of marriage until the children were raised. Note that his marraige date was 19 September 1899.

Albert's exact death date is unknown but since his obituary states that the funeral was Dec. 2,1894, it must have been very late Nov., or possibly December first. His funeral took place from the living room of Charles Albert's home, as the obituary states, and he was buried at the Clothier Cemetery, just outside North English, Iowa County, Iowa.

At the present, this is all the information I have concerning Albert, possibly Charles Albert, Pettibone.

Written by Lona Pettibone Brandner 1984

Clarissa Pettibone was my GGGrandmother who Married Austin O. Butler.

Larry Joe Butler

Geoffry, Trying to place your people. Was your mother from USA? There is a woman the right age in 1930 NJ census. Where did she and you go after the divorce? I suggest you join the rootsweb.com Hackett mailing list as full of knowledgable researchers.

By the way, on George's death certificate, it lists his parents as Mary Hunt and William Gipson who were married oct 19, 1824 in martin county, Indiana. I have some further info on that line if you get so far as to prove John as George's brother. I will dig through some other things I have to see if I can find anything on John too. Also, I want to point out that George was born in 1831 and since his parents were married in 1824, that leaves room for older children that may have already moved out. I haven't found an earlier census with any of them in it before 1850.

I am not sure if they are brothers. On page 127 and 128 of the Jefferson county, Illinois census of 1850, there are Hacketts and mary Gipson, who is George's mother. Mary is listed as head of household and George is 18 and underneath is a name I am not sure of. It looks like four letters and could very well be John. born in 1834 or so according to this. I have seen a name in later census' I think is Jesse, but perhaps John is Jesse? I don't know. Under them is Hannah and Mary.
I don't have any info on Hacketts.
I am still trying to connect Ellender to her parents with actual proof in a record and not hearsay. If you can help with that at all.
Thanks

Hi Geoffrey
My name is Rosemary Walker, my Cousin Phil Cherrington and I have got quite a bit of info., on the Hackett family. We are interested in one particular Hackett lady she was named Parthena Elizabeth Hackett born circa 1877, she married Edward Cherrington born circa 1876, they married in 1896, we are trying to link Parthena and Edward into our Cherrington tree, my Mother still living born 1920, Elsie Laura Walker, (nee Cherrington) recollects as a child her G'father referring to our Parthena, also her last older and surviving Brother Bill cherrington 96 this year also recollects delivering coal to her house as a young man, at that time she was living in Peel Street Tipton, From memory I think when she was born she would have been on the Halesowen area of the W'Midlands. Her Father was Joseph Hackett, her G'Fther shown on the 1871 Census as living in Rowley Regis, his prime occupation was one of Blacksmith, though he had a few others besides. The hackett family were very prominant in Rowley/halesowen/Netherton/Tipton areas of Staffordshire. If this rings any bells with you or you would like more detail, please get in touch

Regards

Ro walker
I have an original Cabinet Card photograph of “Joseph T. Hackett – M.H.S. ‘95”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in Meriden (New Haven Co.) CT in 1895, and he looks to be about age 18. I feel sure this is his Meriden High School photo.

I found Joseph Hackett in the 1880 census for Meriden, CT, age 3, son of John Hackett and wife Maria. He had a brother John. In Meriden, CT in the 1900 census, Joseph T. Hackett is listed with birthdate Feb 1878 in CT, son of John and Maria.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Joseph T. As far as I have been able to tell through the years, no one has been able to positively identity who they are. There has been speculation about who they are but no hard evidence so far. Do you have any positive proof? Thanks for any help. Josiah's parents have been a brick wall for me for a long time now.

Hi I saw your message posted on the web regarding Hacketts and I have been doing my tree for the last 7 or 8 years and my family originated in England. came to the USA, at first they settled in Philadelphia, Schuylkill cty area, and eventually moved to Tioga Cty in PA to Roaring Branch and eventually some moved to the Elmira area of NY. I am going to look at my information and I will email you again. I actually have 2 Hackett trees which I only keep checking the second one to see if there was any tie to my actually family tree. But I do have the tree and those names sound familiar to me. Do you have any additional information. Will get in touch and look forward to hearing from you.

If you could I would really rather be able to send emails directly to you, so if you could send me an email so I can get your email address I will respond with the information directly to your email. Thanks. Darlene

I am doing research for a children's book I am writing, and Castle Hackett seems perfectly suited as a setting. Can anyone provide specific directions to the castle or other photos or descriptions of it prior to being abandoned? I'm writing in the 1579 timeframe.

For example, were the Hacketts cooperating with the Tudor English governor Nicholas Malby at that time, or resisting? I'm guessing cooperating at least publicly, given their proximity to Galway City. Did the Kirwsns move in as part of the Tudor reconquest of Ireland?

Thank you to anyone who can help.

Duane Porter
Author, Molly O'Malley and the Leprechaun, Molly O'Malley: Rise of the Changeling, Molly O'Malley and the Pirate Queen

Hi,
It seems we have a connection due to past relatives.
I have Henry Rudge married to Sophia Florence but I have his father as Charles Rudge married to Sarah White. Not sure which one of us is wrong but would love you to get back to me on this maybe we could compare notes.
Regards
Sally
