Catherine Colman or Coleman or Kohlman married Michael Runner who was born 1764 MD. They had son William who married Sarah Hackley who was a daughter of Samuel B Hackley. Samuel and Catherine, both widowed, married in 1819. In the 1840's Catherine's son rec'd 1/16 of her state. It appears that Catherine and Samuel's children each rec'd a share of the estate.

I am a descendant of Lucretia "Lucy" Hackley (Hurst), through her son, Perry C Hurst. Lucy Hackley Hurst's father, Samuel Ball Hackley, was the older brother of Lucretia Frances Hackley (Mrs Charles Wortham). Lucy was named for her father's sister. He married Frances Slaughter, in Nelson County (area now Hardin County), KY, on 3 Jan 1796. Marriage reference: Two Centuries in Elizabethtown and Hardin Co. Ky. McClure. 1979.

I am looking for the source/documentation re Samuel Ball Hackley's 2nd marriage, to Catherine Runner and what happened to them.

I would be happy to what info I have on this family.

Do you have any copies of vital records (birth, death or marriage certificates)from Lucretia or any of her ancestors? Do you have any interesting information on the family? Through my wife's mother side of the family, they had an ancestor, Henry Eads, who participated in the Revoluntionry War.

Lucretia and Charles son, Charles E. married Nancy Ewing which is on your chart and Nancy's parents are William Ewing and Mary Gaunt Polsen from Grayson County, KY.

Terry Lodge tmlodge@hotmail.com

Randy:

Lucinda Ferguson Hackley wass born on Feb. 24, 1779 in Culpepper, VA. Her parents were James Hackley and Elizabeth Daniel. She married Charles W. Wortham on May 18, 1793 in Nelson, KY. She died in Oct. 1827 in Nelson, KY. Charles and Lucinda had a son nmed Charles E. Wortham who was born Sept. 1, 1802. On the Rootsweb.ancestry.com message board under the "Hackley", some refer to Lucinda as Lucretia.

In my wifes family ancestors there is a Nancy Lucretia Wortham who is the great great grand-daughter of Lucinda or Lucretia Hackley.

Terry Lodge

Janet:

Has anyone replied to your request from 2001? My wife is a descendent of Lucretia Hackley Wortham. The most recent FamilySearch of the Latter Day Saints list her as "Lucinda". Is this a different person becuase everything else matches. My wifes connection is that Charles W. Wortham and Lucretia (Lucinda)son, Charles E. Wortham married Nancy Ewing. Their son William E. Wortham married Hanna Anne Phillips. Their daughter Nancy Lucretia Wortham married James Henry Ray. Their daughter Mary Myrtle Ray married James Harvey Garrett. Their daughter Lillian Marie Garrett married Earl Logan Linard. Their son Donald Earl Linard married Lylah Faye Wallace. I married their daughter, Patsy Rae Linard. The Wallace's,and Linard's live in Butler, MO. The families migrated from VA to Grayson County, KY to IN and then to MO.

I have Samuel Wortham and Ann Wortham listed as Charles W.
Wortham parents. Ann's maiden name is Wortham because "FamilySearch" list her parents as George
(II) Wortham and Anne. The pedigree tree goes back further.

This information was obtained on 6-18-2008. I do not know how reliable this information is. I have found some of the Latter Day Saints information erroneous.

Please contact me.

Terry Lodge
tmlodge@hotmail.com or 937-837-8419

Could Ann be the widow of George and living with her father-in-law. Or is this an error?
I've not researched Hackleys in England myself, other than to look through some databases available at the Mormon center. Woodford did a bit...some of that I've covered on my web site. If you go there and look under the family history section for Hackley's, you will see this. The Virginia Hackleys supposedly came from Isle of Wight off the southern coast of England. Hackley or variations on the name (Haklyut, etc) show up back to the time of the Norman conquest, generally in southern England, including London.

Hackley is one of the more consistent surnames in terms of spelling. By far, it is most often spelled HACKLEY. Occasionally, I've seen it as HAKLEY, HACKLY, HACKELY. This is most likely due to either mispellings or incorrect spellings by recorders. Obviously, if the Hackley in question was not able to read or write, then he could not spell out his name. This does not seem to be a big problem in this family. Most seem to be able to read and write, going back at least to the late 1700s. I tend to ignore spelling variations, since they often are meaningless. I would mention that I have never seen ACKLEY confused with HACKLEY. According to Woodford Hackley, who researched this family in England many years ago, Ackley is not the same name and has a distinctly different sound in English pronunciation. Want some early Hackley info, check out my web site: http://members.cyberrealm.net/~rockfish/xroads.htm

Do you have any suggestions for other spellings that are in the records -----I realize that in the 1800's many wrote names as they sounded and Hackley being mostly British, the accent had it's effect !

Vince,

I am researching the Hackley surname and believe I have run across a possible addition to your information.

I have a Robert Hackley b. 25 Nov. 1822 in KY, whom I believe to be the son or Richard Hackley b. 39 Aug 1782 in Virginia and Margaret Ann Child b Abt. 1785 in Virginia. At this time I am not certain but the times certainly fit. My information comes from my family research back from my grandmother Ruth Maude Hackley. B 23 March 1900 in Kansas. Her father was Samuel Robert Hackley, b. 01 Aug 1875, North Salem, Indiana, whose father was James Richard (J.R.) Hackley, b. 04 Jan 1851, Hendrick County, Indiana, whose father was, Robert Hackley, b. 25 Nov 1822, in Kentudky, whose father I believe was Richard Hackley?
Just wondering if I might be on the right track?
Any information would be helpful!
Thanks,
Randy L.

Hi Linda,
I read your post with great interest, and a bit of disappointment too, because it looks very likely that your James Samuel Hackley is the James son of Samuel and Frances of Hackley's Crossroads in Rappannock Co VA (formally in Culpeper), that I had thought might be my ggg-grandfather. So, if true, then I am back to scratch one in identifying the parents of my ggg-grandfather. If you go to my web site you will see the lineage as I had believed likely, as well as lots of information on the likely parents and ancestors of your James Samuel. Go to http://members.cyberrealm.net/~rockfish/index.htm and click on the tab "Family History" then follow the links to the Hackley family. Generation 1 here is my ggg-grandfather, James Hackley of Culpeper Co VA.

The reason your info was intriguing is because of the dates you gave and the names of his children. Given that James' middle name is listed as Samuel, and he had a daughter named Frances (also name of Samuel's wife and presumably your James' mother), and sons named Burkett and William Martin (not all that common names, Samuel had sons named Burkit and Martin), is strong evidence along with his age which fits the 1820 Culpeper Co Census listing for a James Hackley Jr. who is listed just after the aforementioned Samuel.

I have not been active researching this family for a while, due to other priorities at home, but I'm still interested and would be happy to correspond by email (rockfish@cyberrealm.net). I'd love to get the birth dates you mention and any other info you would be willing to share. Most of my info is already posted on my web site. and I can share anything you have an interest in obtaining.

Regards, Vince

Levant Emery Hackley, b.1827, lived Winona Co.,MN, Kenosha Co.,WI, Cook & Pulaski Co., IL

I have an original 4” x 6” photograph of four generations, identified as “Levant Emery Hackley, William L. Hackley, Lloyd Hackley and Winslow Hackley”. My wish is to get this grand old photo back to family members. Photo was taken in about 1910. The four are sitting on porch steps. Levant Emery looks to be about 80-85, William L. looks about 50-55, Lloyd is about 25, and the youngest (Winslow) is about age 2 or 3.

I found Levant E. Hackley & family in 1880 census in Winona (Winona) MN, and he was 50 yrs. old and son William L. was age 20. In 1900 census for Kenosha (Kenosha) WI, Levant E. and William L. were listed as druggists. Levant’s DOB was March 1827 in NY, and Wiilliam L. is shown with March 1840 NY birthday. William L.’s son was Lloyd L., born Aug 1885 WI. In 1910 William L. lived in Mounds (Pulaski) IL, and Lloyd L. and family lived in Chicago, and he had a child Lloyd W., age 2 (so that had to be Winslow).

Email me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to the Hackley family. My only wish is to get this grand four generation photo back to somebody who will treasure it.

I don't have a connect. I believe that my John and William had another brother James b.abt 1826 in England, but have not got solid record. There was a James in Fall River abt 1870's. Hackley(sometimes Ackley) an uncommon name in this area of New England. Can you provide more info on your Hackleys from Stockton?
