We plan to go to print at the end of the summer. This will be a private printing by myself and a few other researchers, so we don't have the constraints of a publisher or hard dead-line. This book will be distributed to the various county libraries where related Hadaway/Hattaway/Hathaway families lived.

If anyone has anything to contribute to this group effort, please contact me ASAP so we may include your information. I think most serious researchers are already familiar with the DNA Project, so please specify to which line you wish to contribute.

Thanks.

Stan

scbevers@comcast.net

This is the same family.

Reverend Amos Hadaway is the younger brother of my 4th G Grandfather, Wilson Hadaway, who died young in 1813, probably from injuries in the War of 1812. Wilson left a widow, Aley King Hadaway, and a baby son, William (my 3rd G Grandfather). Aley Hadaway is found in the 1820 Wilkes Co, GA Census, living in between Amos Hadaway, her brother-in-law, and Richard King, her father. Amos is married to another daughter of Richard King, Rodicie.

Shortly after this 1820 Census, Aley Hadaway marries James Huckabay. As a veteran's widow, Allie had drawn land in Hall Co, GA, so she moves there with her young son and new husband. James Huckabay raises young William Hadaway as his own, but William retained Hadaway as his name. James Huckabay leaves William Hadaway a one eighth portion of his estate, equal to that of his seven other children with Aley King Hadaway Huckabay.

One of the Huckabay children, James Turner Huckabay, will marry a daughter of the Reverend Amos Hadaway, Mary Morris Hadaway.

As such, you and I descend from the parents of Wilson & Amos Hadaway (Thomas Hadaway RS NC & Lavinia Morris), as well as Wilson's widow, Aley King.

Contact me directly for more information.

Stan

scbevers@comcast.net

I believe this is the same family. Amos was my great great grandfather. His daughter, Mary Morris Hadaway married James T. Huckaby. Their daughter, Alie Ann Rodicy (not sure about the spelling) was my grandmother who married William Gravitt. Their son, James Pellum Gravitt was my father. He was the baby of the family so I am having some difficulty confirming that the info is correct.

I would love to have the information you have on this line. Please let me know when your book is out. I would like to buy it.

My 5th G Grandfather is Thomas Hadaway (1761; VA - 1813; GA). He had a son named Amos (1796; NC - 1885; GA), who was the younger brother of my 4th G Grandfather, Wilson Hadaway (1790; NC - 1813; GA).

If these are the Hadaway's to whom you refer, Thomas was the son of William Hadaway (1726 - 1795) of Halifax Co, NC. I have quite a bit of information for an upcoming book.

Stan Bevers

scbevers@comcast.net

Hi;
I am not sure if this is the same line or not bout it could be. The information that I have on the Hathaway's only goes back as far as Thomas Hathaway b. 1795 in NC. He married a Mary Todd b. 1806 in NC.

So far I have not found his parents or siblings. Would be glad to work with you if we can close the gap between them and find out that it is the same line.

Thanks,
Debbie

Re: Hadaways of Jones County, Georgia

Elizabeth:

I just saw your post identifying your grandfather as James Felton Hadaway of Jones Co, GA. While you and I are undoubtedly cousins, I am probably a bit more distant than some you may already know. Specifically, Brenda (to whom your post responded) and Pat are closer to your line. I am a descendant of Thomas Hadaway (1761 - 1813), while I presume you descend from David, his brother. Both were sons of William & Elizabeth Hadaway of Halifax Co, NC, and both were Revolutionary Patriots.

In conjunction with the Hadaway DNA Project, several of us cousins are compiling a book on related Hadaway (Hataway, Hathaway, Hattaway, etc.) families. The first volume of this book will be fairly simple, as we will print out pages and stick them in a three ring binder. Copies will be distributed to the Genealogy Libraries of pertinent counties, such as Jones, Cobb, Glascock, Morgan, Taliaferro, and Wilkes in GA, and of course Pitt, Edgecombe and Halifax in NC.

Naturally, we would like your input into this initial publication. We are probably looking at the end of the summer for printing. This delay is because we want to wait for the DNA test results of a couple of new participants, which we expect to prove relatedness to our lines.

Please contact me directly so your family may be included.

Stan Bevers

scbevers@comcast.net
Hadaway DNA Project

The Hadaway DNA Project is looking for new participants with connections to England. Our current American participants are all related, but we have not yet identified the family from England with which we share a Common Ancestor.

Testing is painless and reasonably inexpensive. A qualified participant is any male still carrying the Hadaway surname (or genetically a Hadaway). The results will let you know if you are related to other families of the same surname, which is quite valuable for your research.

Besides, it's a lot of fun finding unknown cousins. Please check out our web site:

www.ftdna.com/public/hadaway

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thanks.

Stan Bevers

Hadaway DNA Project Group Administrator

scbevers@comcast.net

Wesley:

I have very little doubt that we are related. My mother is a Hadaway, and we've been in Georgia since 1797. Many off shoots of my direct line migrated west, so Alabama was a natural stopping point. I have information on the Hadaway families going back into the early 1700s, so we might be able to figure out where we connect.

Please let me know as much detail (dates & places) as possible for your grandfather. If you have info on his parents, all the better.

I look forward to working with you.

Stan Bevers

We have no idea as to where we came from in England. My earliest confirmed ancestor is William Hadaway, who died in Halifax Co, NC in 1797.

However, the Hadaway DNA Project shows matches with others who trace their lines back to the early 1700s in Pitt Co, NC. We are waiting for additional DNA test results, which may connect us to a Haddaway who immigrated around 1640.

We would absolutely love to find Hadaways with confirmed links to England to join our study. That could establish family ties between the continents.

Thanks.

Stan

scbevers@comcast.net

Thanks for the family tree. Your family seems very well documented on many internet postings, and I've seen numerous claims connecting your family to mine. Of course, I have not yet seen the actual proof.

I'm pretty sure my own Hadaway family came from England, but we are just a few days away from receiving DNA test results which may clarify a whole lot of speculation.

Because the Hadaways from Kent, England have substantial postings on genealogy sites, I assume there are many descendants. As such, I hope we can soon find a suitable participant to represent this line in the Hadaway DNA Project. This would help researchers on both sides of "The Pond".

Thanks again for the family tree.

Stan Bevers

scbevers@comcast.net

Re: Thomas Hadaway

I wouldn't be so sure your two families from Talbot Co, MD are unrelated. The HADDAWAY family has been in Talbot since the mid 1600s, so many things have happened that we can't document.

You are correct that we need a male Had(d)away still carrying the surname, as the Y-DNA is only passed along from father to son. Your Dad would have carried this gene, as would the father of your Grandmother (Sarah Haddaway). But perhaps your lines may still have a suitable participant.

If you have any living brothers, they would carry your father's Y-DNA. If your father had brothers, and they had sons, then your male cousins would also carry the Y-DNA. Sometimes you need to go back a few generations to "trace forward" and find a good candidate.

Likewise, you would need a direct male descendant of Sarah Haddaway's father in order to test that side of the family. This would be quite informative, as you might find these two families are indeed related.

Family Tree DNA is offering a substantial discount for new tests, which expires at the end of September. If you can find the right participants, hopefully we can get the orders in quickly to save some money.

Let me know if you have any questions regarding the Hadaway DNA Project, as I happen to be the Group Administrator.

Stan

Don't pay too much attention to the specific spelling of a surname, especially more than 200 years ago. Names were changed around all the time. Besides my uncle HADAWAY, the DNA Project has matches with HATTAWAY and HATAWAY. We know that some branches took HATHAWAY.

Stan

To find a suitable DNA candidate to represent your family, sometimes you must climb higher into the family tree. If your father had no brothers, then you need to find a DIRECT male descendant of a brother of your grandfather, great grandfather, or great-great grandfather. This may take a good bit of research, as not many people are in personal contact with third or fourth cousins.

If you'd like help finding a DNA candidate, I'll see what I can do. I would need to know the details of your Hadaway and Haddaway family tree as best as you can provide.

I'd love to have your family in the Project.

Stan Bevers

Debbie:

I descend from Thomas HADAWAY (1761 - 1812) and his wife, Lavinia MORRIS. Thomas was a Revolutionary Patriot. He moved from Halifax Co, NC to Wilkes Co, GA after the death of his parents, William and Elizabeth HADAWAY (1795 & 1796, respectively).

DNA tests show a connection to the HADAWAY clan of Pitt Co, NC. We are still looking for a suitable DNA participant from the HADDAWAY clan of Talbot Co, MD, as a family connection is quite possible.

Stan

I am a decendant of Hadaways and Haddaways in Talbot county but I am female so I can't participant in the DNA. My father is now dead he was the son of a Thomas Carroll Hadaway whos family came from Talbot County Md. and his wife was a Sara Haddaway whos father came from Talbot County. And they were not related.
