Doug,

It's great to hear from another descendant of the Dunmacmay HADDENS. Your cousin Rob Dickinson ("Octagon") will fill you in on the immediate family connections back to your and his grandfather's generations.

William HADDEN of Dunmacmay & Emily WATSON of Lismulladown married June 4, 1880 at Minterburn Presbyterian Church near Caledon, Aghaloo parish, in County Tyrone, Ireland. Their children were:

1. Frances "Fanny" HADDEN - born 1882
2. John HADDEN - born 1883
3. William James HADDEN - born 1887
4. Alfred HADDEN - born 1888
5. Walter HADDEN - born 1893
6. Hans HADDEN - born 1897

------------------------------------------------------------

All 6 children appear with their parents in the 1901 census; and in the 1911 census, Emily said that she was the mother of 6 children, with all 6 living.

1901 Census of Co. Tyrone - Dunmacmay, Aghaloo parish:

William Hadden - Presbyterian - Read & write - 57 - Farmer - born Collooney, Co. Sligo
Emily - wife - R & W - Presbyt. - 47 - born Co. Tyrone
Fanny - daughter - 19 - Farmer's daughter - Co. Tyrone
John - son - 17 - Farmer's son - Co. Tyrone
Wm. James - son - 15 - Scholar - Co. Tyrone
Alfred - son - 13 - R & W - Scholar - Co. Tyrone
Walter - son - 8 - read only - Scholar - Co. Tyrone
Hanse - son - 4 - cannot read - Co. Tyrone

------------------------------------------------------------

William Hadden died Jan. 22, 1921, age 77, and his wife Emily died Jan. 26, 1923, age 70. They are buried in Minterburn Presbyterian cemetery, as are William's parents and most of his siblings.

William's parents were James Hadden & Margaret Stewart/McMasters of Dunmacmay, who lived for a time in County Sligo where several of their children were born -- including William in 1844 (according to Co. Sligo Methodist baptism records).

The probate of James Hadden's will cites his death date as January 9, 1874, and his death date is in civil registrations (at age 64), as well as on the family tombstone at Minterburn. The tall marker in Minterburn Presbyterian Church cemetery has a dozen family members in its inscription.

- HADDEN -
Erected by James Hadden of Belfast
to the memory of his father James Hadden
who died Jany 9th 1874 aged 64 years
John Hadden died Sept. 8th 1877 aged 27 years
Sarah Hadden died Jany 10th 1886 aged 27 years
Lilly Jane Hadden died April 12th 1884 aged 38 years
Maggie Hadden died Aug 3 1890 aged 15 yrs
Margaret Hadden died April 25 1893 aged 76 yrs
Marie Hadden died Dec 10 1904 aged 54 yrs
Louisa Hadden died Jan 7 1905 aged 28 yrs
James Hadden died May 15 1911 aged 61 yrs
Sarah Jane Hadden June 24 1919 aged 48 yrs
William Hadden died Jan 22 1921 aged 77 yrs
Emily Hadden died 26 Jan 1923 aged 70 yrs

Glad to have you in the extended family tree! Let me or Rob know if you have any questions, and I'll look forward to whatever you can share in family data and photos.

Annie
Dear Ms. Crenshaw:

I was very interested to run across your post of March 2011 re Hadden family origin in Dunmacmay, which I saw as a reply to Octagon's post on the topic, which I saw on ancestry.co.uk as well. I would be very interested in any research that you referenced. Appended below for your convenience is my post to Octagon. Thank you, Doug Hadden.

Re: Haddens in Dunmacmay, Co Tyrone, Ireland 19C

Dear Octagon:

My paternal grandfather (who was no longer living when I was born in 1950) was William Hadden. We have a family photo with Hans (in minister attire, short in stature), Alfred (who I believe also was a minister and was very tall) & total of five siblings of William, which family lore has it played polo every Sunday before emigrating to U.S. where he worked as a chef. My cousin in Connecticut has this photo which I have not seen since discussing this with her mom (& my late aunt) Kathleen (Hadden) Bradley maybe 30 years ago. Kathleen's brother, my late father Edward J. Hadden (d. 1975 at age 62) said they lived in Springfield, Mass. for several years but William would travel seeking work, including at Coast Guard House (severely damaged in recent Sandy storm) in Narragansett, RI. We have very little to trace our origins in Ireland except "Augnachloy" written on back of a family photo or on some news clip, can't quite recall which. Per Wikipedia it's a village of 801 persons in County Tyrone in Northern Ireland and which seems to have generated a number of Haddens per Griffith's Valuation 19thC registry. I was stunned to read your post as I am beginning research for trip to Ireland that my (non-Irish) wife & I are taking in September. I will try to track down photo I mentioned & get it scanned so if you are interested please let me know. Also if you have any other information that may continue to clarify this lineage I would love to hear it. Also would love to hear about your trip and your search for the farm. & any polo grounds you may have found!
Thank you,
Doug Hadden
N. Smithfield, RI
Circumstantial tie. In 1850, Margaret Rhodes was living in Crawford County not too far from Samuel. In her household was Robert Hadden, who I believe to be her brother and a son of Samuel. In 1870, Robert Hadden was living with Martha Emmeline Clements, a daughter of Samuel. These seem to be family ties. I haven't seen the actual marriage record for Margaret Hadden Rhodes--perhaps you could find parental permission or bondsman. I feel pretty confident that Margaret Rhodes was not a daughter of James A. Hadden (my line) so Samuel is about the only choice left in Clark/Crawford Counties.

Because I have two Hadden lines in my family tree, I have sponsored DNA tests for a male cousin in each line through Family Tree DNA, so there is a Hadden DNA project. I have learned a great deal from the results. I would encourage any Haddens to become a part of this project, because the more results the more chances of finding a connection.

Margaret Jane Hadden was the daughter of Samuel Hadden (1806-1869) and Mary Lanham. She married Jonathan Rhodes in Clark County, IL in 1845. Samuel Hadden and Mary Lanham married 14 Sep 1825 in Butler County, KY. Samuel Hadden was most likely the son of Hugh Hadden and Margaret Hadden (yes, they were cousins). Hugh (1783-1815) and Margaret (1784-1820/30) were married 20 Feb 1804 in Logan Co., KY and Hugh died 28 Mar 1815 in TN, having been a volunteer in the War of 1812. He was the son of Samuel Hadden and Mary Carmel of Montgomery Co. KY. Margaret was the daughter of Elisha Hadden and Margaret Stephenson. She married (2) Archibald Fears and moved to Clark Co., ILL. Elisha Hadden (1759-1833) of Logan and Butler Co.KY and Samuel Hadden (1750-1831) of Montgomery County, KY were brothers. They were born in Pennsylvania, migrated to Virginia, East Tennessee and finally to Kentucky. There are several instances of Hadden cousins marrying, which makes researching difficult at times. I don't know who Mary Christianson was. I've seen her name from time to time, but no actual evidence of her. Does anyone know of her being mentioned in actual records?

Re: William J Hadden b Co. Tyrone, Ireland 1870 - son of James Alex. Hadden & Mary Ann Moore

Dan,

By now you've discovered much more on your Hadden ancestors, and with William J. Hadden and Mary E. Goodman's 1893 New Jersey marriage record, you found that William's father was "James" Hadden and his mother's maiden name was MOORE. This leads to a marriage in County Tyrone, Ireland.

Lower Clonaneese Presbyterian Church records, Co. Tyrone, Ireland - MARRIAGES

18 Feb 1870 - James Hadden & Mary Ann Moore

James Hadden, 25, bachelor, farmer
Residence: Farriter
Father: John Hadden, farmer

Mary Ann Moore, 22, spinster
Residence: Tullyallen
Father: James Moore, farmer
Witnesses: Thomas Coote, Margaret Hadden

Lower Clonaneese Presbyterian Church baptism records show children of this couple: William (born 1870), Isabella (1871), Eliza Jane (1873) and Ellen (1876). John (born 1879, according to civil registration records) is probably in the church register, too, but there are damaged areas of the original pages and some 1879 entries are obliterated.

You can download & view scans of the original register pages (15 MB) at www.clonaneese.org.uk/baptisms1840-1912.htm

In 1880, James and Mary A. Hadden arrived at the port of New York on the ship "City of Montreal" with two of their children.

James Hodden (Hadden) 32 - country to which this person belongs: England - destination: U.S. - passenger: steerage
Mary A. - wife - 28
Isabille - child - 6
Ellen - inf. - 1

I haven't yet seen a ship record for William James and Eliza Jane ("Jennie") Hadden, but they certainly came to New York, too. They were probably with their parents (but not necessarily, even at that young an age); the shipping clerk may have just missed them in his list. Also they may have been brought over a few years later with aunts/uncles, cousins, or grandparents. This wasn't an uncommon practice, so that an entire family wouldn't be lost with a sinking ship in the trans-Atlantic passage.

Eliza/Elizabeth Jane "Jennie" Hadden married Henry HENNINGS in 1892 in Manhattan, and (as you found) William James Hadden married Mary E. Goodman in Camden, New Jersey in 1893. I haven't traced Isabella, Ellen or John.

James Alexander HADDEN (William James' father) was the son of John Hadden of Farriter, a townland in Killeeshil parish, County Tyrone. John Hadden was born about 1810, judging by his death certificate.

Death certificate from GRO, Dublin:

Date & place of death: Twenty ninth October 1870, Farriter
John Hadden, male, widower, 60 years, Farmer
Cause & duration: Disease of heart, 5 or 6 years, uncertified, no medical attendant
John Hadden, Jr., present at death
Registered: Fourth of November 1870

John Hadden of Farriter's identified children included:

1. Mary Jane who married Samuel Cherry
2. James Alexander Hadden who married Mary Ann Moore and emigrated to the United States
3. John Hadden (Jr.) who married Ellen Beatty
4. Margaret Hadden who married William James McLaurin
5. Sarah Hadden who married Thomas Coote
6. Anne Hadden who married James McIlmurray

John's father was probably the James Hadden counted at Farriter in Ireland's Tithe Applotments, 1829.

I have more information on some of John's children and will be glad to share research notes. The Haddens of County Tyrone have been a fascinating family to research. My own Hadden ancestors lived in and around Ballygawley and Aughnacloy, in Carnteel and Aghaloo parishes.

Regards,
Annie

I am in the final stages of writing a book on the Swope family but would very much like to add what you can provide on Elizabeth's family.

I only have that she had Pearl, a son, and your Alice. So you can be a wealth of information for the book that many others will appreciate greatly.

I'm anxious to hear from you.

Sandra Leonard

Isabella Hadden of Burnley, Lancashire, England - died 1841

The Times, Wednesday, Nov 17, 1841; pg. 3
FRIGHTFUL MURDERS IN BURNLEY, AND SUICIDE OT THE MURDERER.
(From a Correspondent.)
The manufacturing town of Burnley, in Lancashire, has been thrown into a state of great excitement by the commission of a double murder, followed by the self-destruction of the assassin, Robert Morris, a private in the Regiment of the 60th Rifles, quartered in that place. Morris, who is a Scotchman, also officiated as a mess-waiter, and was servant to Lieutenant O’Grady. He had formed an intimacy with a girl named Isabella Hadden, daughter of John Hadden, the mess-master of the barracks, and it was jealousy of this young woman that led to the fatal results we have to state. On Sunday evening Morris observed Isabella Hadden going with Lieutenant O’Grady in the direction of the latter’s bedroom. Providing himself with a carving-knife from the kitchen, he proceeded to the bedchamber, at the door of which he met his master and the girl. He stabbed them both with his destructive weapon, inflicting two wounds in the neck and one in the abdomen of the girl, and some dangerous abdominal wounds upon his officer. The wretched man then turned his weapon against himself, stabbing himself repeatedly in the abdomen, and in other parts of the body. Immediately afterwards he was discovered in the passage, unable to speak, and he only lived three minutes after he had been removed to his pantry. Lieutenant O’Grady, upon being wounded, rushed into the mess-room and exclaimed that Morris had murdered him. He was conveyed to bed, and medical attendance procured, but it was all in vain, the unfortunate officer living only until noon on Monday. Isabella Hadden was removed to the lodgings of her parents, and died in great agony at 1 o’clock on Monday morning. The bodies lie at the barracks, awaiting the inquest, which will be held over them by Mr. Hargreaves, one of the coroners for the northern division of Lancaster.

http://briercliffesociety.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=173&am...

Kris,

I'm so glad you posted that tragic murder story. Although some of the news reports had errors (Isabella's father was Archibald Hadden, not John Hadden), they all provided the links I needed for Archibald HADDEN, born c. 1786-1788 at Glendavagh near Aughnacloy, Co. Tyrone, Ireland, who served in the Dragoon Guards -- whose wife, children and later history I didn't know. At least one researcher has posted Archibald's military records on an Ancestry.com tree this past year, and we've found him in English censuses and other records -- thanks to the newspaper articles about the tragedy in Burnley.

Thank you!
Annie Crenshaw

Annie,
I took a photo of the Edwards gravestone "In Loving Memory Of Thomas James Hopper" at Ballygawley Presbyterian Graveyard. I have a Thomas Charles Hopper, born 1896, son of Thomas Hopper and Jane Campbell, who was a grandson of Charles Campbell and Mary Jane MURRAY of Ballygawley. Thanks for the Hadden connection to the grandmother Kathleen.

Evelynn

Evelynn,

I think the person with grandmother "Kathleen Hadden" was probably Phillip Edwards, grandson of Kathleen HADDEN & Thomas James Hopper "Tom" EDWARDS. Linda and I visited Kathleen several times; she was a cousin of Rae Hadden Gilmore. Kathleen's parents were David Smith HADDEN (1886-1966) & Elizabeth J. McCrea, and grandparents: James HADDEN of Skye (1843-1891) & Doolargy and Ellen JONES.

Annie

Alfred's wife is: 1st: Juliana Hall and 2nd: Sarah Ann Carter.

And you have Samuel Hadden's birthdate as 1776...I have it as 1787.

I am really getting frustrated!!!
Rita:
Hope we have some research in common. I am looking at Samuel Hadden and his wife Mary (Christensen) and would be interested to know if they had a son named Alfred Sidney Hadden who was born 13 Jan 1813 in Mt. Sterling, Montgomery, KY. I am fairly certain that Alfred is their son, or at least the son of Samuel because I believe he also had a second wife named Annie (Annis) Anderson. Would like to compare notes.

We apologise for not replying earlier. At this stage we have only loaded names and dates, not copies of the actual records, which we do have. Do you live in Scotland? You can visit Longniddry Inn, in Longniddry (opposite the train station)where the smithy is still visible that the Haddens worked for several generations. The anvil, other tools and the hearth are still there. It is now a reception room, but when we visited they were very happy to show us around. They also have some old photos on the walls, including what looks like a family group out side the inn in Victorian times. Most of the Haddens are buried in Gladsmuir.
By any chance are you related to Jennifer Smith who lives next to my cousin in Port Seton? I can attempt to send you what we have but because they are downloaded images, they are huge files and may not transmit via email. Would it be easier for us to do this directly to your email? If so, please send it to us.
Yours
Graeme George Hadden Orr.

All Hadden Researchers,
I would strongly suggest you do NOT use data published by David Ross on the Hadden family... especially information he says "based on information from Helen Miller" I AM Helen Miller and it is NOT the information I have given the person he got it from [without my permission]. He has taken my information and jumbled it all up to suit himself. His math doesn't even work/add up. I have informed him and his informer of their errors and they will not correct.
For a lawyer, Mr. Ross certainly makes a lot of errors! He doesn't even copy correctly. He even posted my old email wrongly.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions concerning this.
Helen Miller
Louisiana
