Sharon,
Thank you for getting back with us with your information. We have tried to analyze it and below we will give you our thoughts. Also, find attached to another e-mail William’s will and the other documents found in his estate records. We received them from Carolyn Ladaver. She & Janet Eldred secured copies of them from the Mifflin County Court House – we owe a lot to them for their work & sharing it with us.

First – in regards to the Edward Hagan found in Shortcreek. It is quite strange because he is about the same age & born in Pennsylvania as the Edward who married Abigail Ross. We checked out the census records for him [see below - Item A]. We did not find a Samuel in that area. We did find him still living there with his wife in 1850. With that information, we feel we can positively say he is another Edward. For while, we thought he might have moved and had been caught on two different censuses. Now knowing that he is not the correct Edward, we move on …

In 1810, we find an Edward Hagan living near the William Ross family. He is married with small children.. Then in 1820, we find an Edward Hagan living in Toby Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. This family seems to be a combination of the one we found in 1810 and the children Edward & Abigail had [as per your records] at that time. Theory: could it be that Edward’s first wife died & he married a young lady by the name of Abigail Ross. Also, on the 1850 census in Tuscarawas, Edward Hagan was age 28 born Pennsylvania. Possibly he put down the wrong age … We did not find the family in 1830.

From there, not finding them in 1830, we thought we would look in Guernsey County for Abigail’s brothers in hopes she might be living with them. We did not find her but we did find – [see Item B]. We thought to search Guernsey County, Ohio for James & John Ross, brothers of Abigail. Indeed, we found both names – see census reports below. We thought we had it but soon more complications arose. When we found them on the 1850 census, James was 63 years & John 60 years. That made it look like Abigail would have to be the age you described and our theory was out the window. But we then found residing next to John Ross a Samuel Ross age 45 years. William only named two sons: James & John – no Samuel. Samuel is quite likely too old to be a son of one of them – more likely a brother but we do not know. Knowing that Edward Hagan was older, he may have had some relationship with Abigail’s uncles, possible brothers of our William. All is just a theory – nothing definite.

In tne estate records of William Ross, it is noted that lawyers took care of things for Edward Hagan & his wife, and his sons, James & John. This tells us they were not living in the area. It also had a charge for the Orphan’s Court – this usually means that there are children who are under age. This seems to be the important piece of information that we need to locate. It might give us more clues to put William’s family together. There were at least two generations of William Ross’ in Wayne Township.

A few questions answered but many new ones to get answered. Hope this helps you.
