In 1859 my great grandfather, William Coates was born in military barracks in Inverness, Scotland to his parents George Coates and Elizabeth Coates (nee Haggart). Elizabeth's birthplace is recorded on the birth certificate as 'Ireland'. George Coates was a regular soldier who served throughout the then British Empire and for several years prior to 1859 was based in Cork, Ireland, where he doubtless met his wife. As Ireland was then suffering the aftermath of the potato famine and as Elizabeth was only 15 at marriage, her family may have seen an opportunity for her to escape a dire situation. My brother has found evidence of an Elizabeth HEggart of that age in Cork at that time, but can find no record of her family. If anyone has any information on her or her family I would be very grateful to receive it.
