Haggerty in Ayrshire, Scotland early 1800s

My gg grandmother was Margaret Haggerty born 1808 and baptised 1810 in Muirkirk, daughter of Joseph Haggerty and Jean Orr. I've not been able to find out any more about her parents and wondered whether anyone else has researched this family.

Joseph Haggerty was most probably a coal miner, and his sons Hugh Haggerty born 1810, John Haggerty born 1812 and Joseph Haggerty were all coal miners in Ayrshire.

Margaret Haggerty born 1808 married Robert Strachan in Dundonald in 1828 and had a number of children, but age 38 died in 1846 in Kilwinning.

Hugh Haggerty born 1810 married Janet Muir and had children who all migrated to USA: his daughter Jean married Stewart Shirkie who founded coal companies in Clinton, Indiana. I can find his widow and his sons Hugh and Adam in the US 1880 census in Contra Costa, California but they all seem to disappear from the records thereafter.

John Haggerty born 1812 married Mary Gogles in 1835 and is in the 1841 census at Dundonald with his wife and daughter Ellen, but then seems to disappear from the records.

Joseph Haggerty born 1816 married Elizabeth Aitken in 1836 at Dundonald and then married Elizabeth Durham in 1867. He doesn't appear to have had children, and died in Hurlford in 1877.

As this family are rather elusive, I wondered whether anyone else has been researching any of them and would like to compare notes.

The 1910 census says he immigrated in 1878. I could not find the family in any of 1880, 1900 or 1920. I cannot find an immigration record. Without some clue as to where he came from in Ireland, I don't think there's any hope of finding him. He was born before Irish civil registration began. You'll need to look in depth in South Carolina. What church did they attend? Have you checked those records? Who sponsored the baptisms of their children? Were any of them born in Ireland? What about the marriage record for Wm and Mary? Who were their neighbours? Can you find anyone who might remember anyone in the family when William and Mary were still living?

I found Charles J. Haggerty on the 1930 census living with my great-great grandparents, Charles W. Cook and Mary Anna Rooney in Peterborough, NH. He is listed as a lodger. The census says that he was a blacksmith with his own shop. Census says that he born in Massachusetts, his father in Irish Free State and his mother born in Massachusetts. In further research, I fund him in 1920 with wife Frances in Middlesex, Massachusetts. I would appreciate any insight into why he would have been living with my ancestors, Charles and Mary Cook and their children Daisy (who was 14 in 1930) and Charles W. Cook (9 in 1930. Any information would be helpful and appreciated.

I am trying to locate a Jim Haggerty who grew up in Woburn, Ma. I believe his full name is Bernard James Haggerty. He graduated from the Stockbridge School at UMass Amherst and was in the Navy in the late 1960s. If you have any information, I would truly appreciate it. He has a long overdue apology that needs to be delivered. Thanks

I have run into a complete brickwall searching for parents of Lawrence Haggerty (My grandfather), born 1853, somewhere in County Cork.

The only clue I have is my mother used to say that her family came from a place called "Seven Steeples".

Has anyone ever heard of this village, town, land tract, etc.? I can not find any information on the name.

I would greatly appreciated any information.
John

I just wanted to say thank you so much for all that info on your database! i was wondering if you had even just one picture of any of this line? My believe my ancestors were James and Elizabeth Haggerty from Caradoc, middlesex ontario. There daughter Amy would have been my gg grandmother. Any more info would be greatly appreciated!

I've really just started looking over the past few days. A conversation with my grandmother sparked the interest, and now I've got the bug! I've only done online searches so far, and I've got several members of my family doing searches through attics and things, so I'm hoping something will turn up.

They were Catholic, and the family on both sides has been in Elizabeth for generations. My grandmother thinks her parents were married in the Immaculate Heart of Mary and St Patrick Church. It was founded in 1858, so it's a possibility. St. Mary of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church was founded in 1855. It was the first Catholic church in Elizabeth. Before that, I'm told that Anglicans and Catholics both attended St. John's Episcopal Church. I haven't checked with any of the churches yet. As I'm new to this, can you recommend the best way to access those records? Church records from Elizabeth would be really helpful to me across several different generations and branches of the family.

Thank you so much for your help!!!

I played around with your family for a bit hoping I might find them in a census when Daniel was still living with his parents--probably you did the same, and like me, had no luck? The fact that his eldest son was Daniel suggests his father might well have also been named Daniel. Seeing as both Daniel and Mary were born in NJ, they probably married there as well. According to the 1900 census they had been married for 9 years. Were they Catholic? Have you checked with the Catholic churches for a marriage record? That could give the parents' names. Or might there be a state or county record for the marriage? Often death registrations name the parents--another possibility? It's difficult to advise when I don't know where you have already looked.

Hello! I'm looking for more information on my great-great-grandfather, Daniel J Haggerty. He was born in NJ in March 1859, died around 1930 in Elizabeth. His wife was Mary Leahy. They had two children, Daniel and William. I've always been told the family was from Cork. I'd love to find out his parent's names, and when and where they came over. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!
