Re: Anyone Interested in Illmitz Haiders

Hello,

My name is Terry Haider, I am a third generation descendant of the Illmitz Haiders. I was to Illmitz 25 years ago to check on my family history (help from an aging uncle to trace the family there). By pure accident, I met a friend on a study abroad program who was also going to Illmitz for the same reason. I stayed with a couple there, Franz & Gisela Wollner. Gisela's mother was still alive and new many of the stories of the people who left the are in the late 1800's including many of the Haiders. I met a number people she told me were relatives, but I didn't get great documentation.

My great-uncle Lawrence Haider was a son of Lorenz (perhaps also known as John) who was the immigrant to Minnesota in the 1880's, married to a Susan Haider (I know--sounds suspicious). My friend in Illmitz has asked me to dig a bit more & she would do some more digging for me on the original Illmitz family.

My email address is HAIDERTL@YAHOO.COM. I would love to find out what you may know.

Best regards,

Terry Haider

Frank Haider, bio

FRANK HAIDER
Pennington Co,Minnesota History - p. 447
Frank HAIDER came to the US fra Illmitz, Austria in the year 1887 and worked for some time in St. Paul, MN. He then came to Excel Township in Marshall County to homestead.

He built a sod house, but had to leave it to go out to work for a living. When he returned to stay there as required, he found the roof was caved in by some pranksters, so he could not stay there and lost his rights as the pranks contested it. He went to take another place and this time, he built a house of logs, which he hauled fra east of Middle River by oxen. He once told of when he was down in the well cleaning it and noticed a shdow overhead. There was an Indian, asking for food, so Frank got something for him. A few days later this same Indian returned and left a couple of prairie chickens at his door.

Frank married Margaret ERHART, who passed away sortly afterward. He then married May GANGLE and a son John Haider, Jr, was born, but the mother passed away shortly and John Jr was sent to friends in Crookston to live.

Frank then married Katherine ERHART WEISE, a widow with a son, Joseph and then Frank was born. Katherine ERHART came to America in 1888, when she was 7 yrs old fra Heidenreichstein, Austria.

Hello Gerry!
It's good to be able to get in touch with family members that I haven't seen since we were kids!
I have also been trying to reseach our family tree and keep hitting dead ends at the Atlantic ocean. The Dudley line, however has information that goes way back through almost every European country including ancient Isreal. I believe the family tree that you have is the same one I had (lost it some years back) that was done by Stephen Burdick.
I would like to find more information on the Haider, Burdick, and Sloan lines from the old countries.
Keep in touch. I've been trying to research our family tree and keep hitting a dead end when I get to the Atlantic ocean, with the exception of the Dudley line which I have found webs sites that trace the line all the way back through Judah, Jacob, Abraham, etc. Anyway, it's good to hear from long lost family members, we need to be in touch more frequently.

My dad did moved to PA when he retired, but I have lived in New Jersey all my life. I welcome any contact at mjhaider1@comcast.net. We (wife Kathy, daughter Sarah, son Michael) are just across the river from Philadelphia and would love to meet any relatives.

Michael Haider,1860 something

Greetings to you too. Michael Haider was my great grandfather from Ilmitz, Austria. Immigrated to US in 1902 and married Catherine Lentsch 2 months later (an arranged marriage?) His father was also Michael, first brother also Michael (died at 3 weeks of age) then another Michael born to the same parents 15 years later. He had a first wife in Ilmitz who died before having children, then left the area for a new life in Minnesota. He had 7 children, and sadly died at a young age (49) in a state institution. All of the children stayed in the city of St. Paul til their own deaths. The children of that generation are in their 60's and 70"s and still get together monthly for "lunch". My Michael Haider was a CEO of nothing! :-)

It seems the world is full of Haiders from that town. I have traced "my Michael" in the LDS church records also, but may be out in left field as there are so many Michaels. He came to the US through Baltimore(1891-2), went straight to St. Paul, and married Catherine Lentsch only a couple of months later at age 27, making his birth date 1875, although some records say his birth is 1864.Any ideas?

So far I am unaware of Catherine's birthplace, the family wasn't really interested, except that she was Austrian.
There is evidence of her presence in St. Paul well before Michael arrived, perhaps in her old age(25) the family found a mate for her and sent him to the US. Sorry to hear about your having to send the microfilm back. One of these days I'm going to give up my part time job and reserve that time for research. Thanks for the trouble.

My great-great-grandmother Anna Wienhandl and her husband Joseph Schwarzbauer came from Illmitz to Madan/St. Anthony in 1905. A George Weinhandle was a neighbor and a witness to Joseph's homestead claim. Joseph and George became U.S. citizens on the same day, and had known each other in Austria. Goerge is much younger than Anna--could be a nephew. Could there be a connection here? Also, have you contacted Mary Walcher? She is researching the same Haider/Weinhandle family as you are.

The sibling information is new to me. This is obviously the same George, but I'm still not sure of the relationship to Anna. My Anna was born in 1862. Do you know who Theresa's parents were? I'm suspecting her father was my Anna's brother, but I know nothing about Anna's parents or siblings. Also, will any of you (yourself, Mary, Edie) be at the BB picnic in Minneapolis next month?

Hey...this is strange but when i saw that you had a Catherine Krois on your Haider line I was thinking that name was awfully familiar. In our family, there were three brothers John, Jacob and Sebastian Kroiss (now kruis/kruise) that came from WALLERSDORF, BAVARIA. Jacob Kruise was married to a MARY ANN HEIDER born on Feb 13, 1829 in Moosfurth, Bavaria. Any chance this Mary Ann Heider fits into your Heider family? Where were your Heiders from? Interesting...

I have a shred of information on a "Hader" who married my grandmother's sister. That's the spelling I have, it could be different, maybe "Haider." My grandmother was Miltilda Caroline Cross. She married Charles P. Hammond Bledsoe.

Grandma is supposed to have had three sisters, something we haven't confirmed. Two married Murray brothers and the third a "Hader."

If any of this rings any bells, please post here or email me at bbleds3@juno.com
