I have a set of silverware engraved with the name Haig that I have been told originated on a plantation in possibly South Carolina and was saved from the Union troops by being placed in a well! The pattern originated in 1861. There are later additions in a different pattern to the set but all have the name Haig. I would really like to confirm this history and plantation existance and location. Any Haigs out there know? The last owner was Charles Haig who I believe lived in or near New York City prior to 1950.
