I found Emaline C. Haight's maiden name from her daughter, Helen Haight-Crone's death certificate in MO. ( Helen Crone indexed as CRANE) Emaline's maiden name is Nichols. She is indexed as Caroline E. Nichols with the same birth date on www.familysearch.org records. She went by Emaline C. or E.C. Haight on some censuses in Wyoming, Jones County,Iowa.
Her parents are listed as Isaac Nichols and Elizabeth Bradshaw on LDS records.
Marian

Hello,
I don't think this is any connection to my search. Mine are Mary Ann Bridges born !800 in Wantage Township, Sussex County, NJ and the person I believe to be her brother, Cornelius Bridges, born 1801, same place. She married Joel Potter McAfee and no other.

I have never heard the names you mention above, but thank you for connecting up with me. If anything else turns up feel free to get in touch. Always a pleasure to visit with another searcher. Regards, Carole

I don't see my orginal reply to this line of quetions. I will repeat since it seems to still be unanswered.
Joseph C. Haight is descended from Cornelius Haight of Des Moines Co. Iowa, Yellow Spings. Cornelius's son Cornelius made the trip in 1850 walking to CA for the gold rush. His brother James and his sons also came along. I have a written account of this trip. James and son Daniel travelled up to the Red Woods in Norther CA. They returned with son Henry to IA where James packed his family up minus Henry who remained in IA. They returned to Smith River, CA where they established the town. James and Daniel are buried there.

Brother Corneilus may have made this trip with them also but from Smith River he traveled up through the mountains, not along the coast, into the Willamette valley. Salem / Albany area's still have descendants. Cornelius had a son Corneilus and I suspect this is your JC's father or possibly brother.

I have a lot of information. There are a number of people in OR who are researching this particular line.

Contact me regular email for more.

Where do you live? I'm in Salem

Marilyn
Marmim0946@aol.com

In rereading some information on the Haight line I found something interesting. John Haight b 1815 m. Mary Ann in 1850 census, or Minerva Bridges b 1808 aged 48 years in 1856 census and 1860. Could Mirnerve be Mary Ann?
Marilyn

OBIT: Henry Haight, NY>San Francisco, Ca, Died 3/24/1869

HAIGHT--"Death of an Old Citizen. The numerous friends of Henry HAIGHT will be pained to learn of his sudden demise. He died at his residence in this city, yesterday. He was a brother of the late Hon. Fletcher M. HAIGHT, Judge of the Southern District Court of California, and uncle of Hon. H. H. HAIGHT, the present Governor of this State. He was born in Allegany County, New York, in 1820. When a young man he was a teller in the Bank of Monroe and secured hosts of friends by his affability, business capacity and unswerving integrity. He removed to St. Louis in 1847 and became connected with the banking house of PAGE & BACON. In June 1850 he came to San Francisco with David CHAMBERS and F. W. PAGE to establish the house of PAGE, BACON & Co., those three being resident partners, and D. D. PAGE and H. D. BACON at St. Louis. The business of the firm was chiefly managed by Mr. HAIGHT and its California branch enjoyed several years of great prosperity; but the firm failed in 1855 owing to liabilities incurred by the house of Page & Bacon in St. Louis. For some years past Mr. HAIGHT has filled the office of Notary Public in this city, and been highly esteemed in all the social and business relations of life by every member of this community, acquainted with him. Of a noble and generous nature, a kind husband and father, he has gone down to the tomb leaving a widow, three fatherless children and a large circle of friends to mourn his loss."
Source: San Francisco Examiner, 25 March 1869, p. 2.
I had contact with a descendant of one of the son's of Jesse Haight. She said Huntington's Chorea had appeared in one of their descendants and a few other descendants died in their 40-50's characteristic of Huntington's. No cause of death was given. Since people died early in those days it is something which you might want to check into (eg. cause of death). Sometimes dementia would be listed, which at that early age would be unlikely.

Huntington's Chorea came to America in the 1630's. Three men a Mr. Ferris, Mr. Knapp and I don't recall the 3rd surname now, all had descendants die of Huntington's disease. A few were tried as witches because of the strange gyration they exhibited. Later it was discovered they all had the same mother (she had married at least 3 times).

Ray McAdams

Do you mean Marilynn Elizabeth Pearce? Pearce was her married name cuz she used the last name of her second husband, my grandfther who passed on approximately 1970-1971. His name was Heyward Pearce, was born in Whales, and came to Rochester, NY to become a high school math teacher. My grandmother Marilynn Pearce (not sure of maiden name) was adopoted by a couple living in Auburn, NY,...later on she moved to Rochester where she had training as a pianist at Eastman School of Music. She never spoke of her childhood very much cuz she was severely abused by her parents. It was mainly her mother who constantly beat her, would lock her in a closet for HOURS, and expected her to get straight A's in school, which she always did. Once she got out of there she eventually met my grandfather, Heyward Pearce and disowned her abusive parents and their whole family. She had three kids.....my Uncle Bruce who passed on a few years ago, then Aunt Jackie who is married to Bob Taylor and lives in Henrietta, and last my mother Judith Nancy Pearce whop is still alive and still lives in Rochester.
If you know anymore info about my granparents please contact me at skmicca@gmail.com.
Thank You, Shelly Micca
p.s.
I have a lot on the Bridges and their intermarriages with Haights. I don't find a Mary Bridges that you describe, but my information is not complete.

David Morris Bridges was the son of Benjamin Bridges (b. 1776 Maine, d. 16 May 1840, Washington Co., OH) and Abigail Ellenwood (b. 1778, d. 1 Sept 1839 in Belpre Twp, Washington Co., OH). They married about 1797 in Maine.

Benjamin and Abigail had at least 7 children:

(1) Silas, b. abt 1796, d. 1837, Tunnel Sta., Washington Co., OH.

(2) Jacob, b. 1798 in Mass., d. Nov 1875; m. Eliza Vincent.

(3) Minerva, b. abt 14 Sept 1808 in OH, d. 19 Feb 1878, Des Moines Co., IA; m. John Haight (son of Cornelius & Abigail Haight).

(4) Arthur, b. 1810, d. 24 Mar 1834.

(5) Rebecca, b. abt. 1815, d. bef. Mar 1878; m. man named Withington.

(6) David Morris, b. abt 6 Feb 1817, Washington Co., OH, d. 17 Apr 1870, IA; m. Clarissa Elizabeth Haight (dau of Cornelius & Abigail Haight).

(7) Eliza, b. abt. 1821, OH, d. aft. 1878; m. Job Haight (son of Cornelius & Abigail Haight).

(8) Sarah, d. bef. March 1878; m. a man named Tidd.

Hope this helps. I have a lot of info, and am happy to answer any questions that I can.

Laura (GenieBee111)
5th gr-granddau of Cornelius & Abigail Haight
In October of 2007, I sent the message below to these lists in hopes of finding living descendants of the folks in this little album. I have changed email providers and am updating the information. This album is still available to a family member. If you have a connection to this album you may contact me at vlaldridge@insightbb.com Please read the message below:
***************************************************************************************************************************************

While in Nashville, TN today I found an album of tintype photos. The album is 5 3/4 x 4 1/2 inches in size, with a metal clasp for closing. The spine is taped. The photos in the album are labeled with some stating relationships. I could not bear the thought of someone purchasing the album and removing all of the lovely tintypes and selling them one by one.
I am searching for a direct descendant of Alpheus Tompkins and his wife Rachel Miller. I would like to see this album returned to the family.
I am sending this same message to the message boards for the names listed below and to the Rootsweb lists for these names.
The spellings of each family name are my best interpretation of the writing in the album.

Please contact me off list concerning this album.

Regards,
Virginia L.
Deborah Haight (1760s-1800s)

Hello Jo Anne, Darrel,

I have been away from researching my Haight ancestors for a while, but your expert responses to each other prompted me to try to get back in to resolving a brick wall I hit with a Deborah Haight, a Quaker from Nine Partners (Town of Washington, NY, in Dutchess County).

My info shows that my Deborah Haight was born Aug. 23, 1763 at Oswego, Dutchess County, NY (I think this also in the town of Washington, NY). She married Jonathan Mabbett (b 1762 in Washington to parents Joseph Mabbett and Sarah Titus). Jonathan and Deboarh had 11 children. I am descended from their 9th child, Mary Mabbett. I have LOTS of info about Deborah and her family after her marriage to Jonathan, and their 11 children, etc., and I have assmebled lots of MM records on the Mabbetts and have peiced together the Mabbett part of my puzzle. My problem is in trying to find more info about Deborah's parents etc.

Back in 2002 I posted http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.haight/408.1/mb.ashx in which I stated that my Deborah was on of 6 childeren of Moses Haight and Deborah Mosher.

Problem is, now that I did more research about my Deborah Haight, that statement seems wrong -- I cannot verify her parents or siblings. There is conflicting information in the various sources. So I have a brick wall ending at my Deborah. Deborah is a common name. So is Haight. (Particularly in Dutchess County!) There were many of them.

If any of you have some ideas on where I should look, please let me know.

Thanks,
James

Jo Anne,

Thanks for the reply.
Seems Jonathan was a Quaker. Nine Partners Monthly Meeting (MM) Dutchess Co., NY says Jonathan was b. 12-20 (Feb) 1749/50, Some have taken this to mean December; however the Julian calendar was still in use in England & its' colonies until 2 Sep 1752. The Julian year started 25 Mar, ended 24 Mar. Based on that, I believe he was b. 20 Mar 1749, but I won't quibble.
The Ancestry.com transcript of the MM says, m. bef. 19 Apr 1776, but also says he was not allowed to marry "was passed" 12-22-1775 due to accusations of another woman and that this was "dealt with" 4-19-1776, I take this to mean that his m. was on 19 Apr 1776 or shortly thereafter.
His ch. are said to be: Susan, Hannah, Anna, Jonathan & William.
He seems to be in Washington, Dutchess Co., NY, for the 1790 & 1800 censuses; thereafter it gets iffy.
Thanks again, for the reply.

Darrel

I can't figure this out and maybe you can help, or I can help you. My great uncle was named John Wesley Northrup, he lived in Herkimer, NY and married Cynthia Draper there in 1896. The Draper family says that his father was named George and they think he immigrated from Germany when he was an infant. They also note that his mother was Helen Sterling. I don't think John Wesley is that common of a name so wonder if there is a connection. John's sister, Ella, married William Lynch who died in 1911, Ella was my grandmother.

1800 Census in Bolton Warren Co NY shows 2 male children under 5. No female children at this time.

The large stature you referred to in that article was in reference to the men in the family. They were all over 6 feet tall and at 200 lbs. Very tall then for a man. Women were also tall but from the pictures I have, both are not what you'd consider over weight.

Marilyn

Hopefully this finds you still on the board. I have 15 of Corneilus and Abagail's children. The oldest is Mary but I don't think it's the Mary your referring to. This Mary married John Bickford in Des Moines Co. IA. I don't remember for sure but they may have been part of the family who went west to CA and Oregon. Children were Mary, James (founded Smith River, CA.), Sidney S, (Aaron, Moses,(twins), Julia, Philip, Clairssa, (David Morris Bridges 3 children)Corneilus, John, Job, Abigail, Eunice, Sally Ann, Eliza.
Ann Haight - Nathan Northrup

I'm looking for the parents of Ann Haight. According to the "Northrup - Northrop genealogy" (Ansel Judd Northrup), page 87:

Ann had 4 children by Nathan (Robert Dillon, Daniel, Joseph & Fanny G).

What happened to her is unclear as Nathan married, 2nd, Juda Austin.

* Mentions Nathan was a farmer and school teacher and lived in Lithgow and died there.

Sorry, that was me, had someone over so had their cookies in the browser instead of mine.

The person I'm trying to find siblins or parents of is a Mary Ann Bridges who was listed in various censuses as born in NY, NJ or even England. That said, she married Joel Potter MCAFEE (whose family McAfee Valley, NJ is named for) at the First Baptist Church in Wantage Township, NJ on January 22, 1825.

The ciouple had three children in New Jersey - Martin (b abt 1832), Joseph B (b abt 1837), and Rachel Cornelia (b abt 1837). After they moved to Bradford County, PA they had 2 more children, Benjamin (b 1841) and Ann (b about 1843). I also have a child named Susan with no birth info listed.

Mary Ann has been a huge dead end as we can't find any relatives, so we're hoping David Bridges could be a cousin, brother, etc so we can finally tie her down as to where she came from.

As far as size goes, Mary Ann was a tall, very stocky woman from what I understand (my cousin Carole knows a bit more about her than I do).

Re: Harrison

Harrison Haight born 1797 in the US and died aftert the 1881 Ontario
census. I have information saying that he was married twice, once to Agnes
Doan on 18 Sept 1817 and 2nd to Eliza or Elizabeth McKinily. This is the
one weak link, allthough I have 2 fairly reliable and independant sources, I
have no real proof at this time. I do not have records of childred but am
fairly confident that they had at least one boy, and if correct it was
Joseph Gorham ( he is my great grandfather.)
taken from RootsWeb - Hoyt-L archives

I'm looking for info as well. I know that Harrison Haight was born around 1797 in Pennsylvania. He had a son Samuel A. Haight born March 10, 1825 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and he died July 11, 1910 in Ontario (County of Essex, Windsor, Death registration)and Samuel was married to Rebecca Dutton.
