The Heiligs originally settled Rowan County in NC in 1780s and owned a large number of slaves. Some Heiligs moved to Anson County before the Civil War and joined other than Lutheran churches so there may be some Heiligs who changed their names to Hailey in Anson County. This is interesting because I am married to a descendant of the VA Highleys. Reid Heilig

I went to your website and found the Hailey families who owned my husband's ancestors. My husband and his family now own the land they worked. They have 89 of the acres of land they worked on for so many years. We have yet to nail down which one of the slaves in the wills on your site, owned by your family is his actual ancestor. We will probably know that this summer. His mother and I are going to sit down and look in the "family Bible". Thank you so much for your help.

Zanetta,

My husband is from the Anson County, North Carolina, Hailey's. His family is still there in Lilesville. My husband's father is Lexie Ray Hailey and his mother is Josephine Smith. K.C. and JoJo are "distant cousins". I guess you are a relative somehow. My husband's mother was threatened by the KKK when she was carrying my husband. My father in law has many brothers and cousins there in the Lilesville, Peachland, Wadesboro area in North Carolina. Give me some more details on your parents, grand parents and great grandparents and I can probably link it all up for you some how.

I read this to my husband and we had a great laugh. His name is Kenneth Hailey. He is African American and from the Hailey's in Anson County North Carolina. They took their owner's name and kept it as many slaves did. My maiden name is Hawley and we are of German descent and my father's family is from the Pennsylvania area. hmmmmm....is my husband actually my cousin? I guess it's a small world afterall and I am my own grandma.

Origin of Hailey Name

Food for thought! The earliest record I have found of a Hailey surname was in the case of an Ursula Hailey, daughter of John and Agnes Scott Hailey in the early 1700s in PA(?) evidently. Ursula is an uncommon English Christian name but a common German one. Three Heilig brothers Henrich, George and John along with a sister Anna Ursula came about 1720 to PA. George changed his name to Highley and his offspring further anglicized it to Harley and then to Hawley. The brother John dissapears. Could this name Hailey be a change by John but he named his daughter after his sister or mother. The Heiligs in part then went to NC in the 1780 and in part on then Il and later farther West. Their trip to NC was down the Great Wagon Road through the Valley of Virginia. Could some of these Haileys in VA and NC be in fact Heiligs. This may be a place to look if you have hit a brick wall. The Heiligs have pretty much stayed Lutheran so there are excellant records but if those who anglicized their names also changed their church it becomes very hard to track back. There may not be any substance to this supposed name change but it is worth investigating if you have come up against a brick wall.

I can't help you with the Mahala connection but I do have a question for you. In all your searching, have you come across any information about Williamson H Hailey being a slave owner in Anson County North Carolin? My husband's family are the "black Hailey's". They still have the land that was given to them when their "owner" freed them and left North Carolina. I am having difficulty finding out any information on that generation. I have all the way back to very late 1800's birth dates for one or two of his family, but I wanted to connect them up with the slave owner to better research their family.

Haley/Hailey

Has anyone come across a Haley/Hailey from Ireland, immigrated to New York and had a small grocery, I believe, business at Chatham Square, New York City/Manhattan. I do not know their names, but they had a daughter Catherine (my 2 GR grandmother), born about 1820/1821 in New York.

Catherine married William Grant about 1843 in New York. He was in the military, so they moved around quite a bit. They had 5 children.

Catherine died 1 Jan 1867 in Mattoon, Coles county, Illinois. Her husband, William Grant, had died in 1864, so after Catherine died, her children were awarded a guardian, T. W. Gitruth.

That is all I know about Catherine. I am hoping someone is acquainted with this Haley/Hailey family.

Mary

Williamson H Hailey NC>TN>TX

I am descended from Williamson Hailey who married Mahala G Rushin in Gibson Cty TN in 1841 and later moved to Van Zandt County Texas. Williamson, sometimes called William, was the son of Duncan Ross Hailey and Mary Penny. Here's my problem. For years I have thought that his wife Mahala G Rushin was the daughter of William Malacai Rushing and Marab (Mary Abigail) Unknown. She was born 1819 in NC. I have a lot of information on that branch of the Rushings. Today I found the will of William M Rushing online and I discovered to my dismay that his daughter Mahala is NOT the one who married Wm Hailey. His daughter married Jesse Gardner and was married to him and living in Tennessee at least up to 1880, while Wm's wife Mahala was in Texas. I would love to know who the parents of this correct Mahala Rushin are. She was born in 1821 in NC. I noticed today that quite a few trees online have the same information that I do. Can anyone help solve this mystery? Would the real Mahala Rushin please stand up?
