Your query caught my eye as I am a descendent of Richard Haines of NJ and also of a Jonathan Haines. The name first seems to appear in my research of Richard Haines with Jonathan Haines b. 2 May 1688, m. ABT. 1706, Mary Matlack, (daughter of William Matlack and Mary Hancock). Jonathan died 1728 is mentioned.

I inherited many letter from my Jonathan to his brother Nathan and some that his wife Elizabeth Wright had written. These documents I gave to the Missouri State Historical Societylocated at the University of Missouri's Lowry Mall in Columbia, MO;because, I could not perserve them as well as they could; however, I have copies of them all. If anyone out there find these documents of interest contact me. They tell of the vigars of fronteer life in 1820+ Missouri life.

PLACE Northampton Twp. Burlington Co. NJ
DEATH DATE 26 AUG 1868
DATE 26 AUG 1868, PLACE Caesar’s Creek Mm, Green Co. OH
Zimri and Elizabeth were buried in New Hope Cem. Green Co. OH.They were
married by JP at New Hope Mm.
Zimri and Elizabeth Compton Haines came to Ohio with their respective
parents when they were young. He was from Burlington Co. NJ, and
Elizabeth was from South Carolina. They married in the neighborhood of
New Burlington, later locating on the farm in Caesar’s Creek Township,
later owned by their son Asap. This was the old Faulkner place and the
brick house which is still standing (this was written in 1918) was
erected in 1821, the bricks being burned on the place, and the timber
used for construction being cut and milled on the place. Zimri made
extensive improvements to the place after taking possession. He had been
trained in his youth as a skilled cabinet maker and after settling on
the farm, maintained a workshop, where he was often called on to make the
coffins necessary for use of the community. He also made much of the
furniture for his pioneer neighbors. He lived to be 75 years of age, and
his widow survived him for some years, she being 86 years of age at her
death. The family were Quakers and their children were reared in the
simple faith of the Society of friends. Zimri and Elizabeth had 12
children. Asaph, who continued to live on the family farm, Clayton, a
farmer, Phoebe, who married Joseph Davis and moved to Kansas, Samuel, who
was a farmer in the township, Elwood, who went to Iowa and farmed. Eli
and Edward made their homes on farms in the neighboring county of
Clinton, Zimri, who died young. Sarah who was the wife of Milton Fawcett,
Rebecca Ann who married Masco Bales, Mary Maria, who married Samuel Brown
and spent her last days in Indiana and Elizabeth who married George
Carter.

MILT Adam Fowler
DATE 1793
PLACE NJ Census Listed in Militia of Evesham TWP.
OCCUPATION: Farmer
Places of residence: Zwiebrucken Germany/Burlington Co. NJ/Shamokin,
PA/Medford NJ/Waterford Twp.

Was a private 7th class in the Bucks County Militia. He enlisted 5/23/1781
Adam and his family were part of "The Great Runaway" of 1778 in which
families who settled in what is now Williamsport PA were chased away from
their homesteads, returning, in the case of Adam Fowler, to the Haines
farm near Marlton, NJ.
Adam was born in Zweibrucken, Germany ca. 1749 according to John Wesley
Haines in his compilation "Richard Haines and his Descendants" Adam
emigrated to America circa 1760 with his brother Jacob and Mother
Catherine. She was the widow of William Fowler who evidently died in
Germany. The family set sail for Baltimore where they intended to settle
with two of Catherine's step-sons, but the ship was diverted to
Philadelphia. Their passage was paid at the dock, which was a custom at
the time, by Nathan Haines, a well to do plantation owner in Burlington
Co. NJ. Adam, Jacob and Catherine were in his employ until the passage
was repaid.

During this time, Adam courted Nathan's daughter Elizabeth and they were
married about 1774. After the birth of their first child, Rebecca in NJ
1n 1775, they went to the frontier in Pennsylvania and homesteaded on
land owned by Nathan Haines in the Chilisquake hills, not far from the
town of Northumberland the confluence of the west and north branches of
the Susquehanna River.

The frontier was very perilous with frequent Indian raids, and other
hardships of isolation. During Indian attacks, Adam and his family were
able to take refuge at Fort Augusta, about ten miles from their farm. As
the revolutionary war in the costal states required more manpower, the
militia protecting the settlers were withdrawn, causing the Indians to
increase their raids, and causing the settlers to leave their homes in
July, 1778. Adam, Elizabeth, their children Rebecca and Jacob H. along
with Adam's mother Catherine walked back to the Haines Plantation in
Burlington County NJ, where they stayed for the duration of the War.

Adam and Elizabeth purchased two acres of land in 1782 which they farmed
until 1796, when Adam purchased land at Silver Hill in Waterford Twp.,
Gloucester Co. In what is now Gibbsboro. He sold the farm to his son
Nathan in 1817.

Adam and Elizabeth are buried in the churchyard of Old St. Margaret’s
church, known as Colestown Cemetery. Their tombstones were lost many
years ago when the new church was built.

NER HASKIT Another Estemed "Old Settler" has joined "The Majority. It is with no feigned sorrow that we are called upon to chronicle the passing of Ner Haskit, who departed life in this city, and the residence of his son-in-law E. R. Stephenson on Friday morning, June 18, 1897, aged sixty nine years old. New (sic) Haskit was born in Pennsylvania (nothing in any records show that the family was ever in Pennsylvania) Nov. 14, 1828 and was of Quaker parentage. With his parents, he became a citizen of Ohio, and there, when just past his majority, married Miss Martha Ann Russell, one of the noblest of her sex. To them were born four children, one son who died in infancy, and three daughters who survive their parents, as their mother passed away some twelve years ago. They are Mrs William Henry Parks, Mrs Edward Stephenson and Mrs Owen Stansbury, all residents of this vicinity and worthy of their honored parentage. Mr. Hasket and family came to Linn County, Kansas from Ohio in 1859 and settled on a claim where now stands the Hall Ridge School House. He united with the Baptist Church in this city in 1868 and lived up to the teachings of His Lord.
