Joab Hale was born between 1756 and 1760 in Kent Co., Delaware. His name was Joab Heald. Joab was illiterate. In his adult life his name was recorded as Heald, Hail, Hails. But, perhaps, never as Hale. His children mostly used the name Hale. About 1790 he moved from Delaware to South Carolina along with several Dill families. He and Lavinia Dill marries in about 1790 in Spartenburg, SC.

I am a direct descendant of Joab. Y-DNA analysis shows a 37/37 match to descendants of a Heald family. Several members of this Heald family relocated from Cheshire, England to central Pennsylvania in about 1702. They were all Quakers. Joab's connection to this family is established by abstracts of Kent Co., Delaware wills. These wills establish Joab's father as Joseph Heald, son of Thomas Heald, son of John Heald who immigrated to Pennsylvania from Cheshire, England in abt 1701. This Heald family is well documented in Quaker records from the 1600s in England through the mid-late 1700s in Pennsylvania. The documentation breaks down in the time of Joab's grandfather, Thomas. Perhaps Thomas split from the Quakers.

All of this is available in greater detail in my file "Our Hale-Fawvor Family 5-23-12" available as a private family tree from Ancestry.com. If you will send your name, email address, and describe your connection to the Hale family, I will "invite" you to view the file on Ancestry.com.

I look forward to hearing from you.
