Mary (Hale) Thompson, b.1863, dau of Sheldon/Flora Hale, lived Waupaca Co/Marathon Co., WI

I have an original four generation Cabinet Card photograph of “Mrs. Clement Hale, mother of Sheldon A. Hale, (who was) father of Mrs. T. O. Thompson, (who was) mother of Clement Hale Thompson”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in Neenah (Winnebago) WI, and their ages look to be: Marinda (Bidwell) Hale (abt.early 80s); Sheldon A. Hale (abt.mid 50s); Mary (Hale) Thompson (abt.mid 30s); Clement Hale Thompson (abt.age 1).
I found Clement Hale (age80), wife Marinda (Bidwell) Hale (age72) in 1880 census Winnebago Co., WI. In the 1880 census of Waupaca Co., WI, Sheldon Hale (age46), lived with wife and 7 children. 1900 Marathon Co., WI census shows Mary (Hale) Thompson with DOB Jul 1863, whose husband was Timon O. Thompson. Ancestry Public Member Tree shows Sheldon Atwell Hale with birth Oct 1833, son of Clement Hale and Marinda (Bidwell) Hale. Clement Hale Thompson in 1917 WWI draft registration shows birthdate Nov 1888, in Whitt?sey, WI. Photo, obviously then, was taken in about 1889, based on age of Clement Hale Thompson.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to the Hale or Thompson families.

I don't know of a direct connection but...I have a Rosetta Leah Hale who went to Pike county Ky in 1923 from Sullivan county TN and gave birth to a son Ottie Victor Hale in Jan 1924. She was unmarried as far as I know as he took her last name and then returned to Sullivan county TN/ Washington county VA area after his birth bringing him with her. I have been unable to locate why she went to this area unless she went to some relations there to have the baby. If you run across any connections to these folks I would be greatly appreciative of info.Rosetta Leah was the daughter of Samuel A. Hale and Margaret Goodwin and born in 1908 in Sullivan county.

Wow that is amazing. I had heard that my gg grandfather (John Hale) had a brother James, but I could not any proof of this. It is thought that John was born abt 1815 in Wythe County, VA, but according to the Wythe County Historical Society no Hale family was living in Wythe County during the time John would have been born.

I have a birth listing for a child of John Hale and Sarah Fawbush (Brackenridge Hale, born 1861 in Magoffin County, KY), on this birth listing it has John's birthplace as Wythe, VA, and Sarah's birthplace as Sullivan, TN. I would think that John would know he was born in Wythe County, VA even if the Historical Society says no Hale family was there.

But, with my yDNA showing no Hale connection, but a connection to Acker, Aker, and Akers, then my gg grandfather could have been an Acker, Aker, or Akers born in Wythe County, Va and taken in by a Hale family from a surrounding county.

Who were the parents of your James Hale?

The Silas I am researching was born 1843 in Hawkins Tenn. Apparantly there was two in that time period. But his father James was born in 1803 in Wythe County, Va. Probably a good possibility that James and John were related and possibly brothers.

Brackenridge Hale20,20, born 26 Jul 186120

I had a yDNA test performed by Family Tree DNA (FDNA) hoping to find yDNA matches with other Hale's at the Hale DNA project at FTDNA. The only Hale I matched was a known cousin. My cousin and I DO NOT match any other Hale at the project. FTDNA notified my cousin and I that we matched the following surnames: Acker, Aker and Akers. Another cousin I found through ancestry research said her mother told her and her brother that they were not really Hale, they were Aker. The cousin's mother said an Aker was taken in by a Hale family and changed their Aker name to Hale.

I did find this info on some Akers:
Thomas Jefferson Acres is listed in the "Lost Children of Wythe Co VA” (by Mary B. Kegley) on page 122 as "poor boy, bound to George Keesling on June 5, last, and George now being deceased, it is ordered that he be bound out again. George Keesling, father of George, deceased, consented thereto." There was no information as to which family he
went to next. I also, found information that an unnamed Akers was apprenticed to an unnamed family and was removed from that family and rebound to another family because of ill treatment. No information on which family he was rebound to.

Thanks for any help in uncovering any of my Hale mysteries.

John Hale

James B Hale, Sarah Sallie Wireman and Lewis Hale, Magoffin Kentucky

I am looking for information on James B Hale. He is the second husband of Sarah "Sallie" Wireman who was first married to Lewis Hale. I believe Sarah Wireman had five children with Lewis Hale and then they divorced and she married James B Hale and had five more children with him. James B Hale was born in July 1862 based on census data. He married Sarah "Sallie" Wireman-Hale on Dec 19, 1881 in Magoffin County, Kentucky. Sarah Wireman was born May 1853 on the same census. Sarah Wireman married Lewis Hale at age 17 on the 1870 census. In 1880 Lewis is shown on two census and the second shows him as divorced. Five children were born to Lewis and Sarah: Emma Hale 1871, Abe or Abram Hale 1873, Proctor Hale 1875, Jacob Hale 1876 and Vincent Hale 1878. James B Hale and (Sarah) Sallie Wireman-Hale had five children together, William "Bill" Hale 1886, Sarah Hale 1890, George Hale 1891, John Morgan Hale 1892 and R B "Rob or Robert" Hale 1898. James B Hale is my great-grandfather. I have pictures of James Hale and his son George Hale and grandson Thomas James Hale. I will share with other Hales. I am trying to find more information on James B "Sugar B" Hale from anyone who can search record in Floyd or Magoffin County. I have one picture of James B Hale and Sarah "Sallie" Wireman- Hale together. I would like to confirm James B Hale's birth date, birth location, middle name and his parents.

HALE/BLACKWOOD Mississippi

Hi All,

I posted this message several years back, but I have a tiny bit of information to add.

I noticed that the HALE/HAILE family who descends from George HAILE has a few females who have the name, Artemeisa or a similar spelling. I believe, not proven, that my John Casey BLACKWOOD was probably married to one of the HALE/HAILE females. The last bit of information I have on John Casey BLACKWOOD was a court appearance in Marshall Co., MS 1844. There was a John C. BLACKWOOD, Justice of the Peace in 1840 Tippah Co., MS.

Here is the previous posting:

I am attempting to tie the BLACKWOOD family to the HALE family, possibly from Greene Co., TN, but finally in Tippah and Pontotoc Counties, Mississippi.

My 4th grandparents, ANDREW C. (1780, SC -- 1859, Tippah Co., MS) & SUSANNAH ROBERTSON BLACKWOOD (abt 1783, TN -- between 1866 - 1870, probably Tippah Co., MS) married in about 1800, probably TN.

Their son, JOHN C. BLACKWOOD (born about 1805, ?) married a ARTEMENCY unknown last name. According to the 1840 Tippah Co., MS Census, they had the following children;
1. male born between 1820-1825
2. female born between 1830 - 1835
3. male born between 1835 - 1840
4. male born between 1835 - 1840
5. female bron between 1835- 1840
6. female born between 1835 - 1840

I have no record on this family after the 1840s. I did find the following information:

Name: BLACKWOOD, Susan J.
Year: 1850
County: Panola
Township: 13Th District
State: Mississippi
Roll: M432_379
Page: 331
Image: 277
Mississippi, PANOLA, Roll 379 Book 1, Page 331a
18 yrs. BLACKWOOD 14 yrs MS
Joseph B.BLACKWOOD, 11 yrs., MS
difficult to read

I received information from another HALE researcher that a HIRAM BLACKWOOD was living with Shadrack Hale in Yalobusha Co., MS 1850.

This researcher said that they believed that one of the daughters of TALBOT & NANCY BROOKE HALE/HAILE married a BLACKWOOD and the children were:

1. Susan J. BLACKWOOD b. ca 1832 Tennessee
2. Edward C. BLACKWOOD b. ca 1834 Tennessee
3. Virginia M. BLACKWOOD b. ca 1836 Mississippi
4. Joseph B. BLACKWOOD b. ca 1838 Mississippi
5. Hiram BLACKWOOD b. ca 1843 Mississippi

This was some of the other information I was given regarding this family of TALBOT HALE:

Talbot Haile & Nancy BROOKE m. Dec 21, 1800 Lincoln Co., Kentucky
Talbot HAILE presumed son of Shadrack & Mary ( ) HAILE/HALE.
Talbot HAILE b. Mar 5, 1775 d. BLACKWOOD's wife, ARTEMENCY, MEDIA?

Does anyone have any information with regard to any of the above data?

Linda Cashen Gaunt

I believe that Nathaniel's father was Thomas Hale of Virginia. There is a book entitled, "Thomas Hale and his descendants". I also believe that Thomas came from Norfolk, VA. and his ancestors came from either Jamestown, VA., or Baltimore, Maryland, in the 1600s. I hope this helps. Brian

I descend through JOHN HALE and TABITHA MAINARD and their only child JAMES MAINARD HALE. Tabitha died from complications of the birth. He secondly married Lovina (Vina) Stone who he had the remainder of his children with and was married to when he was killed in his fields in 1863. I have a photos of JOHN HALE and JAMES MAINARD HALE. I also have their ancestors. If you are related to this JOHN HALE...please contact me @ my email address: Kayleefriend@yahoo.com I have a Facebook group that I started over a year ago...going backwards on the different lines of my ancestry. We are just getting ready to study this JOHN HALE this week. If you would like to join my Facebook group, please let know also in your email. Thanks, Kaylee

Hale of Massachusetts
letter dated October 23, 1850 by Benjamin Hale Jr. in Newburyport, Massachusetts and sent to his father the Rev. Benjamin Hale, President of Geneva College in Geneva, NY.

Addressed to Rev'd Benjamin Hale, D. D., Geneva College, Geneva, New York

Belleville
October 23, 1850

I intended to have written to you long ago but somehow or other didn't.

I got here with Uncle Joshua from New York City last Saturday at 2 o'clock. Uncle Josiah [Hale] has improved considerably in health. He was on his way to Philadelphia when I reached Brooklyn (between 9 & 10 A.M.) so I did not see him till Tuesday evening. Uncles Thomas [Hale] & Joshua [Hale] were with him.

Uncle Bridges family are all tolerably well. I dined with them last week Wednesday. Called on the Theological students on Tuesday. all were well & busy.

You may tell [sister] Sarah that I intended to have gone to see Miss Ellen Douglas but I found that the Express train for Boston did not stop at Port Chester & so to have gone there I should have had to stayed another week in Brooklyn as I did not think of starting till Friday.

We got to Boston at one o'clock at night. Aunt Mary Lane is not well. She has not yet recovered from her cold. Cyrus has got the mumps [but] not very severely. Aunt Mary has a bad cold. Grandmother is not well. Yesterday her head ached & she was dizzy. Her eyes have troubled her for some time. Uncle Joshua [Hale] has a lame back that troubles him considerable. Mary Cary Miltimore has a heavy cold & seems quite unwell. With these exceptions, we enjoy tolerable health.

I expect to pass the winter in Boston with Uncle Moses [Hale] & attend medical lectures there. The term commences the first Wednesday in November (a fortnight from today).

Uncle Josiah sent your last letter on here a day or two ago. I left Mrs. B, safely at Mrs. Knight's in Brooklyn. Had she been alone, I guess she would have had some trouble, though she is a pretty independent character. She did not have any fare to pay for her little girl. Capt. [Eben] Knight ¹ is going to California, has a very good situation as agent for the steamers. His nephew has got command of his ship, the New World, & takes his brothers in the ship with him. The Captain's family will probably go to Portsmouth in the spring & remain there.

We hope that you are having a pleasant time in the college -- both the faculty & the students. You said in your letter that you had sent away one of the Juniors for awhile. I could not make up my mind who it could be.

Sarah's old friends Emily & Helen Adams report says are to be married -- one this fall & the other in the spring. Miss Tewkesbury too (not Hannah) is said to be engaged & her beau has lately made an offer to Mr. Whitmore for his house. Quite a clearing out there'll be here for an empty place.

Our friends here are somewhat inquisitive about Sarah. The most I can tell them is that I think she is in Geneva. While I think of it, I will just observe that Aunt Mary Lane & A. E. Rouseas both complained to me of Sarah's not answering their letters.

Uncle Edward [Hale] had returned to Newbury, Vermont before I arrived here. He'll be back with ____ I suppose this week or next.

Love to you all at home. Your affectionate son, -- Benj. Hale, Jr.

I have a question about Preston Hale, son of Dudley Hale born in 1797 in Virginia. All of the trees say he died in 1850 but I have found the 1850 census where he was 53 living in Cherokee Co. Alabama with his wife Elizabeth 51 and daughter Sarah age 11. I then find the 1860 census where he is 63 living in Hunt Co. Texas with his wife Elizabeth 61 and his daughter Sara age 20. I don't see how he could have died in 1850. Also does anyone know if he had a daughter named Phoebe Hale who married William Henry Isham?

Hi Sharon!

Thank you for replying to me. I just started using Ancestry and haven't figured all the ins & outs yet. Once I pay for the membership, I'm sure more info will become available.

My info: 61 yrs old, married, 1 stepson/daughter-in-law, 2 grandsons, live in Maryland

From what little I have found, it seems that 2004 was a really bad year for the Hale family. Do you know what happened that year?

Do you know if Ernest Hale ever remarried? My one and only memory of him was a trip to Alabama when I was really young. All I remember is a lot of adults and kids around. He brought me back to Md. and I never heard from him again. If he tried to get in touch with me, I was never made aware of it.

You said that Gettie Lee was related to your ancesters. How are you related and how distant cousins are we?

Thank you for replying.

Take care, Gary
My 4th great grandmother was born in a wigwam at this so called reservation near Bluefield WV in 1803. My ancesters claim to have gone there and visited her father. They claim to be Cherokee but that is not proven. I have taken DNA tests and I do carry native american DNA.

Hi there, Somerset. I took a look at your tree and see we many of the same Hale's up. I have since found that there were two or three Hale families in Franklin County and that some of the Hales in each of these families claimed partial Native ancestry before they moved to West Virginia in the late 1800s.

I have also found out that I am likely descended more from the John Hale of Bent mountain 1706 or a William Hale who had been descended from the Hales of New England intermarried with the Quarles family and had a lot of Native American descendants who moved westward early.

Finally, there was the family in Franklin County that was in part descended from the Lephews/Leffew, Martins and Quigleys some of whom were Indian and/or Melungeon in ancestry. The problem has been that many people have these families which were not originally related heavily intertwined on their trees because some of them were even intermarried with the same families in the same counties.

My Hales also claimed to have had a connection with Nathan Hale, the Revolutionary's family in Connecticut. I have heard from other descendants of Native American Hale's that same story.

You can contact me direct if you'd like. I'd like to hear about which of your Hale's claimed Native American ancestry that were from Bluefield.

I have researched this family a little. I remember his father as Esau James Hale or James Esau Hale from Russell County Va. Listed on census's as white, mulatto and indian. I have tried to make a connection with my Hale's from Russell Co but have not been able to find any evidence. I also read that Esau was arrested for trying to vote in Tennessee.

Thank you for getting in touch with me. Yes, I would like very much to exchange information with you. Concerning Gettie Lee, a person from Ancestry that took photos at the Thomaston Cem. told me that she was not the correct person I was looking for however, on Find-A-Grave they have her as Gertrude Gettie Hadaway. She was the daughter of my Ancestor Gaines (if I remember correctly right off) & his father was Spencer Hadaway & my GGrandfather was Joel & my Grandfather William Thomas Hadaway.

Thanks so much & I understand about your mother not wanting to talk about things....my parents & Grandma Hadaway were the same & we didn't klnow then to ask questions about Family History. I have learned more about my families from researching over 20 yrs. now & most recently since I have joined Ancestry.

This means that we are distant cousins & that makes us family if that is okay with you.

Sharon

My name is Gary Desha Hale. My father was Earnest Desha Hale. My mom is is Florine (Florence acccording to some records) Twigg (maiden name). There are records of marriage between Mom and Earnest that I have found. Mom told me as I was growing up that Dad had died in an automobile accident in Mobile. I don't think the divorce was amicable, therefore, I don't think I was given correct information. Mom is still alive (92 years old) but does not want to talk about the past. I'm assuming that I have found the correct ancestry. Please respond if you are willing. Thank you.
